Super Bowl MVP QB Patrick Mahomes has signed a 10-year contract extension with the Chiefs.  The deal is worth $450 million over the 10-year period and could be worth up to $503 million if various incentive payments are met.

Mahomes new deal is now the richest valued contract in American pro sports.  Mike Trout held the previous record after he signed a 12-year, $426.5 million contract with the Angels in March 2019.  However, Trout's MLB contract is fully guaranteed - whereas the Mahomes contract has signing bonuses, guaranteed money, non-guaranteed money and out clauses for both the player and the team, as is customary in NFL contracts.

Including the two years remaining on his current contract, Mahomes will be tied to KC through the 2031 season.

Some guy took his blonde girlfriend to her first football game.

After the game, he asked her how she liked the experience.

If you think what happened in the NBA on Wednesday can't happen in the NFL, you don't know what year this is.

Old rules are out the window in 2020.  Long-held expectations are outdated.  The Detroit Lions canceled practice Tuesday so they could stand outside of their team facility and talk about police brutality in front of reporters.  Nine NFL teams canceled their practices Thursday so they could discuss larger societal issues among themselves.

Ostensibly, this week's sports protests sprouted in response to an incident in which Jacob Blake was shot seven times by police Sunday in Kenosha, Wisconsin.  But if you've been listening and paying attention for the past several months, you're well aware that this is about much more than just the latest police shooting of a Black man.  Players aren't simply outraged that this happened, they're outraged that it keeps happening.  And they want us to know they aren't going to just keep playing basketball or baseball or football or soccer on our televisions as if it's not.

What are the odds that the former Browns kicker knocks through the last second winning field goal for the Bengals tomorrow night.  I'd say pretty high.

The NFL opened two of their most expensive stadiums ever for the 2020 seasons - only to have COVID-19 prevent fans from attending these new football palaces(!)

But even without fans and the normal public pageantry that would have accompanied it, they still did open for 2020.  SoFi Stadium - LA's new home to the Rams and the Chargers - opened on Week One for the Rams and then for the Chargers during Week Two.

SoFi Stadium was built for a staggering $5.5 billion.  The new stadium seats 70,000 for a standard NFL game and is expandable to 100,000 for major events like the Super Bowl, World Cup, Summer Olympics (which are all scheduled in coming years).

SoFi Stadium will be the cornerstone of a massive mixed-use development in the area next to the old LA Forum (which itself may give way for an expensive new home to the LA Clippers).  Because of this, and some other factors, this NFL stadium is unlike any previous NFL stadium.

First is the way it looks from the outside.  Below is an aerial of SoFi Stadium:

1020392253_SoFiStadium-00-aerialview.thumb.jpg.6a26206df5df28e7c7b71fd0dd648182.jpg

If you're wondering where the football stadium is, it's under a massive roof over the standard field and surrounding seating bowl.  The roof slopes down to some of the corners and folds over at some of the other edges.  Also, much of the interior is set below grade (there was a height restriction due to the site being in the LAX flight path) which helps conceal the "stadium-ness" of it.

Below is an under-construction aerial which helps to orient where the stadium bowl is located under the roof:

1126478923_SoFiStadium-01-aerialunderconstruction.jpg.e215799b28ef4d35f21ab7f72fe00277.jpg

^ You'll note that SoFi Stadium has some additional elements beside the seating bowl.  A large exterior plaza is located between the 70,000-seat stadium and a 6,000-seat performance venue at the other end of the facility.  Below is an aerial showing the roof area over that exterior plaza:

1468723866_SoFiStadium-02-aerialfinished.jpeg.2ca2cdba1e375b7b3a2c5149df850192.jpeg

And below is a ground view of that exterior plaza taken from the large artificial lake constructed next to the stadium:

1292774506_SoFiStadium-03-exterior.jpg.a9c82ea872a64042e84f066a332a140f.jpg

The next way that SoFi Stadium is unlike any other NFL stadium is the interior.  Below is a view showing the translucent roof covering the seating bowl and the newest (and biggest) video display board in the NFL.  The sort-of oval-shaped structure has video displays on its outside and inside - and is actually slightly larger than the football field it hovers above(!)

345531183_SoFiStadium-04-interior.thumb.jpg.de382bc74946ce773fc774bb431a2c45.jpg

The roof is fixed over the interior seating bowl - but one end of this interior is open to the adjacent outdoor plaza.  This view gives a glimpse of that open end to the left of the massive video board:

SoFi Stadium's opening really did steal much of the thunder from the Las Vegas Raiders didn't it?

SoFi Stadium's innovative features and gigantic price of $5.5 billion makes the more conventionally designed Allegiant Stadium with its "mere" $1.8 billion price tag seem somewhat paltry.  An irony considering it is the most expensive NFL stadium yet built, except for LA's new stadium.

Here's some article links and a quick tour of Allegiant Stadium - home of the Las Vegas Raiders - aka "The Death Star":

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/29864321/raiders-ecstatic-open-luxurious-death-star-allegiant-stadium

The $1.8 billion Allegiant Stadium has 65,000 seats for football and is expandable to 72,000 for other events.  Below is an aerial view showing the stadium in relation to downtown Las Vegas (aka The Vegas Strip).  The new Vegas stadium has a fixed translucent roof (same as LA) and a side that opens facing the Strip (similar to LA).  But it also features a grass field that sits outside when unused and rolls into the stadium for NFL games. (this same system is used at the Arizona Cardinals stadium that opened in 2006)

Below is a view of Allegiant Stadium next to the I-15 freeway.  This side of the stadium, which faces the downtown strip, has huge operable windows which open to the interior seating bowl.  There is also a glimpse of an 85-foot tall torch inside that honors Al Davis, the late founder and long-time owner of the Raiders:

$5.5 billion.

For contrast:

  • FirstEnergy Stadium cost $283M in 1999 dollars ($434M in 2019 dollars, per Google)
  • Lambeau Field cost $960,000 in 1957 (though cost $295M to renovate in 2001-2003 and has had other major upgrades since then)
  • The current entire market capitalization of KeyBank is $11.36 billion.

In normal investing, a $5.5 billion non-growing investment is probably one that you hope can earn about $550 million per year.  In profit, not gross revenue.  Even with two separate teams playing there and lots of great weather for other events year-round, that's bonkers.

It's also California.

Everybody surfing and riding dirt bikes all day rather than freezing all winter like in the big football towns.

The Pittsburgh Steelers-Tennessee Titans game will not be played during Week 4 following two additional positive coronavirus tests among the Titans, the NFL announced Thursday.

The simplest scenario for rescheduling is Week 7 on Oct. 25. That's the Titans' bye week.  Pittsburgh is scheduled to play at Baltimore that week, but both the Steelers and Ravens have byes in Week 8, which would allow the NFL to make a change affecting only one other team.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/30015123/nfl-says-steelers-titans-game-played-week-4-two-more-positive-tests

The NFL really should have extended the season by one or two weeks and added additional byes to account for this potential. Maybe a mandatory bye week for all teams late in the season to allow teams to make up a missed game due to an outbreak in a team without any scheduling difficulties.

And now both the NE Pats and the KC Chiefs have multiple COVID positives.  So the NFL is postponing Sunday's marque matchup and trying to reschedule for Monday or Tuesday(we'll see!).

This is now the second Week 4 game to be postponed/rescheduled - and along with the Titans (who are reporting more positives) marks the third NFL team with multiple COVID positives this week.

Can't believe the NFL didn't build in any buffer weeks for this very thing.

Very Stable Genius

The NFL got through their Week 4 scheduling and ended up with two Monday games - KC vs NE + the regularly scheduled MNF game because of NE's COVID issues (well, Cam Newton's COVID issues really).

However, Week 5 scheduling is getting trickier.  They are going with the two-game Monday setup again.  DEN vs NE for the early MNF game and LAC vs NO for the later regularly scheduled MNF game.  NE (or rather Cam) being the reason again.

But because of the Tennessee Titans' COVID issues - currently the NFL's most infected team - the NFL pushed their game from Sunday to TUESDAY(!)  So they've got BUF at TEN for next Tuesday.  Which then means that next Thursday's game will need to be rescheduled because Buffalo was one of the teams scheduled to play(!)

That is unless the NFL would force Buffalo to play on Tuesday and Thursday(!!) - which you might not put it past the NFL to try.  But even they must know they can't "MLB" their way out of this by scheduling double-headers to get all their games played.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/30093166/nfl-adjusts-schedule-8-teams-moving-forward

The NFL is really trying to "MLB" their schedule to keep the 2020 season going.  That Week 5 "early MNF" game between DEN and NE?  Forget it - its been moved to a Week 6 Sunday game because NE had to close down their practice facility again.  Which is cascading into a bunch of additional schedule changes for the coming weeks.

One game that is not being rescheduled is this Tuesday's Bills-Titans game, which was moved to this unusual day because the Titans couldn't open their practice facility until Saturday.  But it is still Sunday - that could all change on Monday(!)

That game was ridiculous.  The Broncos went with the WR on their practice squad who was a QB in college.  And here's how it went:

1512719972_NFLScreenshot2020-11-30at7_24_24PM.png.a62fe5cf22363f92b7b18f6e247ba3dc.png

That's right.  WR/QB Hinton had more interceptions then completions(!)  Hinton played 24 of the Broncos' 43 snaps on offense, while RB's Royce Freeman and Phillip Lindsay took direct snaps the rest of the time as the Broncos gained just 112 yards in a 31-3 loss to the Saints.

The Broncos asked the NFL to move the game to Monday so three of their QB's, who all tested negative this past week, would be eligible if they tested negative on Sunday (which they did).  That request was denied.  At least one Broncos player thought the NFL was making an example of the team by not moving the game:
