^ although they were never in that playoff game, for the record the browns didn’t play that bad and probably would have won except if, err, well, if qb mike phipps hadn’t tossed five freakin interceptions lol. no td’s or glory next for franco vs the dolphins. that came later — 1972 was all fins, although the famous undefeated dolphins season had quite a few close calls.

also, earl morrall played the browns playoff game and bob griese the steelers game and sb. i remember that was a big deal because they would say he was an old man at 38, which is funny today with brady 45.

as he always will franco is bringing back childhood memories of those dam steelers. here is franco, mean joe greene and bradshaw in a 1980 mattel commercial:

Jags unveil 'stadium of future' with covered seats, a proposal critical to team's future

Mark Lamping

Sports executive

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars unveiled conceptual designs for their “stadium of the future” on Wednesday, providing a glimpse into a $1.4 billion project that would tie the team to one of the NFL's smallest markets for decades.

The proposal includes a 62,000-seat, open-air stadium under a translucent covering that's the equivalent of “wearing shades in the sun,” team president Mark Lamping said. It also includes a 360-degree concourse that’s four times wider than the current space.

Capacity could be expanded to 71,500 for the annual Florida-Georgia rivalry, the Gator Bowl, a College Football Playoff game or the Final Four. Pools and a party deck would remain in the north end zone.

Why star NFL running backs have been devalued: What's next

Bill Barnwell, ESPN Staff Writer
Jul 13, 2023

Something feels wrong about what's happening for running backs in the NFL. As teams approach training camp later this month, four respected veteran rushers remain free agents, seemingly with little interest. Kareem Hunt wasn't re-signed by the Browns after his contract expired, while Ezekiel Elliott, Leonard Fournette and Dalvin Cook were released by their respective franchises to create salary cap space. None of the four has signed elsewhere.

Packers fans lose out on free bar tab in Jets win

ESPN.com
Sep 12, 2023, 03:11 PM ET

Some Green Bay Packers fans had a lot riding on the outcome of the New York Jets' game vs. the Buffalo Bills on "Monday Night Football."

Jack's American Pub, a Milwaukee bar, had announced a promotion this season: if the Jets, -- who traded for Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the offseason -- lost, they would cover the bar tab of anyone who opened one 15 minutes or more before the game started, according to CBS58.com.

With Rodgers exiting the game with an injury in the Jets' first series, it looked like patrons would get some free beer for the evening -- but as the saying goes, that's why they play the games.

Will Las Vegas Super Bowl field hold up after NFL turf issues?

Feb 9, 2024

LAS VEGAS -- On Jan. 9, two days after the Las Vegas Raiders' season finale at Allegiant Stadium, newly appointed NFL field director Nick Pappas posted a photo on X of the Raiders' rollaway grass field being ripped up to make way for the one-time-use field for Super Bowl LVIII to be played 33 days later.

In 12 posts over the next 30 days, Pappas gave his followers a behind-the-scenes look at the installation and preparation of this year's Super Bowl field. He peeled back the curtain on how the grass was harvested, rolled up and then laid out in a tray outside the stadium. Pappas shared photos of the field being lined and the logos painted.

On Wednesday, he posted a video of the tray being rolled into the stadium.

The halftime show was ugly and incoherent.  The halftime shows all blur together at this point.

It was okay, though probably not if you dislike that kind of music.   It would have been more fun to watch if Lil Jon had included some of his East Side Boys material.  Heads would have exploded.   :)

Bring back the marching bands at halftime.  They are way more talented IMO.

Then the networks cut away like they do during the regular season.

Yeah, supposedly that's how the big-time superbowl halftime shows started.  Viewers were switching channels during halftime.

If the NFL switches to neutral sites for the NFC/AFC championships, it'll be interesting to see if they do big-time halftime shows or what, exactly, they come up with to keep people from changing channels.

I remember a year in the late 80s when they promoted the halftime show with 3-D glasses.  We all eagerly anticipated the show and then the 3-D effect didn't work.

The purple and orange 3D glasses that came with pop so you couldn't use regular red and blue 3D glasses you had sitting around the house already. You had to do the pop promotion.

There may have been Elvis impersonation as well.

Were there any references to Elvis at any point during the Superbowl?  If there were, I missed them.

It's kind of amazing that they didn't time that new Elvis movie (which I didn't see) with this first-ever Las Vegas Superbowl.  At the very least they could have had him lowered by wire from the dome and do the coin toss.

The 3D glasses thing was 1989, when impersonators were more of a thing and he was much more culturally relevant.    The man passed away nearly five decades ago, after all.

New NFL kickoff rules: What do coaches, players expect?

Kevin Seifert, ESPN Staff Writer
Jul 29, 2024

A wild scramble commenced on the afternoon of March 28. NFL owners had approved a fundamental overhaul of kickoffs, agreeing to implement a structure so different from tradition that competition committee chairman Rich McKay ranked it among the league's most substantial rules changes of the past 30 years.

The timing left teams 163 days before the regular season starts to practice the new alignment, which the NFL projects will more than double the rate of returns from the 2023 season and add about 1,000 plays to games over the course of the season.

The list of questions seemed endless:

Given the basic premise of the redesign -- less downfield running and more incentives to return -- what personnel changes would be needed?

How many returners should be on the field?

What is the ideal kick trajectory and placement?

Are there ways to shield kickers from risking injury amid the potential projected uptick in being involved in tackles?

How would field position be affected?

What other peripheral side effects should be expected?

Most notably: Will it produce as many returns as the NFL hopes?

ESPN spoke with coaches, players and analytics experts this spring as they rushed to prepare.

So the games are going to get longer. American sport is incredibly disrespectful of people's time. Soccer pretty much can't reach two hours total. F1 has a 2-hour time limit. Meanwhile college football games routinely go 4+ hours and NASCAR hits 5 all the time.

How about they get rid of that non-guaranteed money bulls**t first, then worry about kickoff rules. Half of these guys get Parkinson's, but their teams can withhold millions to save on budget.
