WOW!!! The NFL will now pay ESPN $1.9 BILLION per year.....

http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily/Morning-Buzz/2011/09/08/ESPN-NFL.aspx

....so get ready for ESPN to start covering the NFL more heavily than the NFL's own network which isn't even part of basic cable.

$1.9 billion!

BTW, I am really enjoying the storylines in the NFL this season -- the resurgence of the Lions, Bills and Raiders; the amazing comebacks by the Lions, the disappointing season for the Eagles "dream team" and the Steelers so far, surprise victories each week, and more. I have become less of a "homer" for my Browns and am able to enjoy football in general, with or without the Browns. Of course, I learned this in the mid-90s when they went away and have never gotten emotionally involved with the replacement Browns. So there is an upside for me of having a bad team as my home team. It's let me appreciate the league more than I have in the past, and this year I'm being rewarded with many good storylines to follow.

I'm feeling quite the opposite.  I'm sick of "We're going to cover all the teams at once ... your favorite teams just won the game; let us take you to the end of this other game you don't care about; upt that one is over now, onto another game you don't care about... and now to the sports desk for old dried up talking heads analysis on mostly games you don't care about."

Get Direct TV or the NFL package on your cable system. As for me, I've been spending most of my time on Sundays on the NFL Channel on during the the 1-4 p.m. timeframe, where they track all the games at the same time.

I hear the RedZone Channel is fantastic for this.  All the scoring opportunities and keeps you interested in all the games going on.  Its like the first weekend of March Maddness, except it occures for 17 weeks during the Fall/Winter

ESPN: Raiders owner Al Davis dead at 82

Like him or not, the man was a true pioneer.  And arguably one of the most important figures in NFL history.  Safe to say, the NFL would not be the entertaining sports juggernaut it is today without Al Davis.

The New York Jets really got "tebowed"!

Chicago Bears good and bad breaks from Sunday:

GOOD BREAK: Beating the Chargers to win their sixth straight game and go 7-3.

BAD BREAK: QB Jay Cutler's right thumb.

Suh gets suspended.  Houston loses QB Leinhart - after losing QB Schaub - and signs Delhomme.  Tebow triumphs - again.  The New York Jets and New York Giants both lose and come closer to playoff elimination.  The San Diego Chargers and the Philadelphia "Dream Team" Eagles both lose and confirm their playoff elimination.

Even after Delhomme's Cleveland woes, I like him and I am rooting for him.

The Jets did win didn't they.  In the words of that great American intellectual Rick Perry - Oops!

In other NFL news - the 0-11 Colts travel to New England.  The Patriots are 20 point favorites.  Anyone want to take Indy and the points?

While massive blowouts usually don't happen in the NFL as they do in college, I think this is one time I might want to  take the Patriots with the points.

Madonna to perform at halftime of Super Bowl

NEW YORK (AP) - The Material Girl will be taking the stage on football's biggest night.

Madonna, who has sold more than 300 million records, will perform at halftime of the Super Bowl in Indianapolis. The NFL and NBC announced Sunday during the Detroit-New Orleans game that the Grammy Award-winning singer will highlight the show at Lucas Oil Stadium on Feb. 5.http://apnews.myway.com/article/20111205/D9RE62QO0.html

After yesterday's Browns & Bengals debacles against Baltimore & Pittsburgh, we are indeed a humbled state in deep pain.  :whip: (Can you feel it?)  No postmortem needed.  :drunk: (No matter what's said, it hurts...)

I read that as well. What he did is unbelievable. You would think the guy would have scaled back his contribution after he left Cleveland but he took it a step farther:

"In addition to giving 79 area kids $10,000 each for college, 'The 79 students were provided with laptops and other supplies to help them out when they arrived on campus (the laptops and supplies were never part of his promised donation)."

Good to see he followed through with his promise.

Plenty of meaningful games in the last week of the NFL's regular season.  Some teams just need to win to make the playoffs:

- If Cincinnati wins, they get the last AFC wild-card spot.  If they don't, the NY Jets, Tennessee Titans and Oakland Raiders all have a chance for that wild-card spot.

- If Denver wins, they get in as AFC West champs.  If they don't, Oakland can be AFC West champs with a win.

- And the regular season ends with the purest "win and you're in" scenario.  The Sunday Night game is Dallas at NY Giants.  The winner will be the NFC champ.

And one team just needs to lose to win:

- The 2-13 Indy Colts hold a tiebreaker edge over the 2-13 St. Louis Rams for the #1 pick of Andrew Luck.  The Colts just need one more loss to clinch it.  But they've won their last two games.  Will they win their third straight and blow the #1 pick?

Sometimes you can lose but still win:  Cincinnati and Denver both advance to the playoffs despite Week 17 losses.  Thanks to the Jets and Raiders losing.

Sometimes it's better to just win:  The New York football Giants stomp the Cowboys to win the NFC East.

Sometimes you can just win by losing:  The Indy Colts locked up the #1 pick with a close loss at Jacksonville.  And they needed it too.  The Rams also lost to finish 2-14.  But the Colts "win" the tiebreaker for the top pick.

And Indy fired the Polian brothers.... most likely over a disagreement about what to do re Manning and Luck.  I hear Irsay is dead set on taking Luck, which creates a PR nightmare in Indy.  Let the circus begin!

Now I was wondering if that firing had something to do with Luck and Manning.  Man it would be great if they didn't take him and it shook up the top of the board a bit.

Neither Wallace nor McCoy are the QB of the future, but I have always thought Wallace is easily the better QB of the two.

Sorry, just realized I posted in NFL instead of Browns thread.  Oh well, the Browns are still technically a pro football team, so I suppose it's still on topic.

Teeeeeeeeeeeeeee-bow!

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

Yes he did, and I never stopped believing, even when the Steelers tied the score to send the game into overtime.  My faith never wavered.

Since, I grew up by Youngstown I've got a lot of Steelers fans on my FB feed. Let's just say tonight has been entertaining.

LOL, I expected a rainbow above the stadium and a chorus  of angels after that game. Say what you want about the guy, the games are entertaining

I wonder if 43% of Americans will say that divine intervention was responsible for Tebow and the Broncos getting shellacked tonight

This is why I can't hate on Tebow, though my Facebook status did comment on the fact that the hedonist had 6 TDs when Tebow only had 3 completions....

That pesky Lucifer! God probably figured he gave Tebow enough attention and was catching up on his Words With Friends account.

The thrill of victory for the Patriots and Giants.

The agony of defeat for the Ravens and 49ers.

Those were two great games.

The kick is up

Quote the R****, "nevermore"......

The ghosts of Municipal stadium pushed that kick left.

Might Tressel be the next head coach of the Indianapolis Colts?

WBNS 10TV:  Sources: Tressel Gets Second Interview With Colts

So, Tressel gets thrown out of college sports for ethics problems, but he is welcome in the NFL.  This reminds me of when the baseball owners would not let Debartolo  buy the White Sox because of his ties to the mob, but the NFL let him buy the Forty-niners.

He was actually thrown out for refusing to snitch on his players.  It's not like there was any involvement with drugs, gambling or anything else having a serious impact on the integrity of the game.

^^ The NCAA'd definition of ethics is suspect at best...hypocritical and arbitrarily applied at worst..

Those were two great games though.

Warren is being represented in this year's Super Bowl.............kind of corny, but I like it:

Superbowl picks  - let's get em in!

Giants by 9.  Over/under is 53.5, I'm taking the under

If the game is close, I'm going with the G-Men.  But I could also see a blowout by the Pats reminiscent of those 1980's Super Bowls when the NFC was running roughshod over whoever the AFC put in.  Putting a gun to my head, I'll take the under and the Giants by less than a TD.

I'll go with the Pats 31-30.  On a game-ending field goal!

Giants by 6, over.

I'm interested to see how Patriots secondary holds up against the Giants passing attack, I think Eli will find open men all game.  Also interested to see how Brady holds up to the Giants pass rush

Yay Giants!

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Well, the Pats almost won on a game-ending play (re: my pick).

Another great Super Bowl.  Great game by the Giants and Eli Manning.

Putting a gun to my head, I'll take the under and the Giants by less than a TD.

I usually perform my best under pressure

pretty weak game overall.  Seemed like both offenses struggled to find a rhythm except for Brady's 14 straight completions.  Probably my least favorite superbowl since 2001 Giants vs Ravens

*grumble* just needed a couple of touchdowns, hehe.

This is probably the best and worst representation of the Super Bowl.  Great on the field action, specators, not so much.
