Posted September 18, 201113 yr Obviously a lot of people on this site travel around. I was curious where you all plan to head or where you've gone this past year. 2011 has been a busy traveling year for me. I try to get out and go someplace at least once month, even if it's not too far away. Please exclude business travel. I know if it was included it would make the list more impressive, but these are supposed to be places you go to explore or for vacation. Home Base: Chicago March 2011: Cincinnati April 2011: Ann Arbor and Detroit April 2011: Los Angeles, Palm Springs (Coachella Music Festival) May 2011: Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City June 2011: Indianapolis July 2011: Toronto September 2011: Madison, WI --------------------------------------- September 2011: Washington DC October 2011: Pittsburgh October 2011: Milwaukee (Riding my bike there!!!!!!!) November 2011: Ann Arbor and Detroit November 2011: Saginaw ,MI December 2011: Saginaw, MI April 2012: Atlanta, Seattle, and Los Angeles. June 2012: Minneapolis August 2012: San Francisco As you can see, I don't travel much between January and February. The reason is my paid time off from work is pretty much all used up from the holiday season. I don't accrue a decent amount of time off until March where I can take off several days in a row. Another thing is, I don't like traveling to other cities where it's still mildly cold. I'm usually going to take pictures and want the best weather possible.
September 18, 201113 yr I don't have any trips planned, but I went to Pittsburgh, Louisville, and the Outer Banks this summer. Also, I just went to NYC last weekend - pics will coming once I download off the camera - I hope I got some good shots.
September 18, 201113 yr I am really impressed you already know where you'll be traveling in August 2012! Or even April, 2012. I am the world's worst procrastinator (hence the hours on this site) so usually don't know where I'll be traveling even a month before a scheduled vacation.
September 18, 201113 yr This year I went to DC for work in May, we vacationed in Sugarcreek Ohio mid-summer, I took a road trip to Wisconsin a couple months ago and this month got back from southern FL (near Ft. Liquordale). This was a heavy travel year for me and I have no other trips planned the remainder of the year. I'm also done traveling for work since my job duties have changed. We've been all over parts of Ohio for various county fairs but I'm not sure if that counts as travel as the trips were 2 hours or less. We are going to the state fair in Cols next year. Next spring I have a tentative trip to chicago planned for a mommy get together, and next summer I think we are vacationing in Hocking Hills, but that's all I know.
September 18, 201113 yr I rarely plan trips like that in advance (as you know NorthAndre) but I do know I'm going to Dallas for Christmas. That's all that is "known." I think I'm going to BosWash in October. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
September 18, 201113 yr Probably Northwest Indiana (Hammond/Whiting) early October, possibly Brookville/Punxsutawney PA after that, likely Chicago mid-month. After that, I will burrow in and hibernate until Spring. Next summer is too far away to plan.
September 18, 201113 yr LOL everything 2012 is pretty tentative. The SF trip in August is definite though. My sister and some friends are going to Outside Lands Festival. I envy you folks that do roadtrips. I really like the experience of driving somewhere and stopping at places along the way. Problem is I don't have a car
September 19, 201113 yr file under not too far away, but i just back from a long weekend at fire island today. the only thing we plan about it is 'usually in september.'
September 19, 201113 yr I've been telling people that I don't travel much, but I may have to revise that statement. Home Base: Toledo, Ohio May 2011: Montreal June 2011: Pittsburgh, DC, Hampton Roads, Charlottesville VA July 2011: Ludington, MI August 2011: Seattle ----------------------- November 2011: Chicago March 2012: Toronto April 2012: San Juan, PR May 2012: Tokyo June 2012: Geneva July 2012: Sapporo, Japan
September 20, 201113 yr Home Base: Dayton Places planned this year: Holidays: Louisville Fall trip: (either late October or early Nov): Johnstown/Allentown-Bethlehem/Pittsburgh
September 20, 201113 yr file under not too far away, but i just back from a long weekend at fire island today. Wow!!!.....are you one of those gay guys that goes to Cherry Grove and "the Pines"?
September 23, 201113 yr file under not too far away, but i just back from a long weekend at fire island today. Wow!!!.....are you one of those gay guys that goes to Cherry Grove and "the Pines"? lol! no, but fire islanders love that people think the island is exclusively gay. that keeps the riff-raff in the hamptons and jersey where they belong! however, we did walk from ob thru the stunning sunken forest national park and out to cherry grove and the pines, just as we do every year. that is a hell of a beachy walk and takes hours and you have to take a water taxi back. there were a ton of gay beach weddings going on, including one for a couple of ladies who have been together 58 years(!), which really brings home how unfair the ny state marriage laws were. unfortunately for us, there were also a ton of straight long islander weddings going on too in the other towns, which pissed me off because it kept post-labor day hotel prices up. i have some iphone pics, maybe i'll do a little thread on this trip.
September 29, 201113 yr file under not too far away, but i just back from a long weekend at fire island today. Wow!!!.....are you one of those gay guys that goes to Cherry Grove and "the Pines"? FI isn't exclusively gay. Hell I'm gay and I hate it. I went for the first time, in a long time, this summer.

October 10, 201113 yr I love popping back to this forum for survey threads. Home base: Cambridge, Mass. February 2011: Quebec City April 2011: Washington DC June 2011: Dayton (including a day for Camp Washington Chili/Cincy Reds, of course) June/July 2011: Luxembourg, Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris August 2011: Ocean City, NJ September 2011: The Poconos, Pennsylvania October 2011: Madison, WI (this week) November 2011: Dayton (presumed Thanksgiving trip) Plus four trips to NYC so far this year (including being stuck there during Hurricane Irene), some trips to nearby places like Cape Cod, and a couple of visits to northern NJ. There really needs to be more Ohio in all of this.

October 12, 201113 yr We are driving to Point MacGregor Provincial Park on Lake Huron tomorrow. This is my first trip out of the country since 9/11. We vacationed in Acadia National Park, Maine last month. It is beautiful and it has an extensive network of carriage roads that you can cycle on. You can even ride up to scenic view points.
October 14, 201113 yr Hello from the Super 8 Motel in Brookville, PA. This place is tired but not quite beat-up. I willingly would have paid more for something better, but there aren't a lot of options here besiides the truck-plaza motels. I checked for evidence of bedbugs before I brought my stuff in, and the room appears to be OK in that respect.
October 14, 201113 yr HOME: New York and Fort Lauderdale, FL WORK: With the reduction in winter schedules, I'm back to flying domestic transcon. ATL - LAX/SFO. In CLE this weekend to see the folks.
October 14, 201113 yr Dec 25th - Cleveland > Newark > Glasgow, Scotland (staying in Balloch with family) Dec 31 - Glasgow > Gran Canary Islands Jan 7 - Gran Canary Island > Glasgow Jan 14 - Glasgow > Newcastle (Newcastle United vs Queens Park Rangers) Jan 15 - Glasgow > Newark > Cleveland
October 14, 201113 yr Busy year. I did travel a lot for work, but frequently tried to mix in pleasure too. I worked in Chicago for 1/2 the year while living in Cleveland so I'll leave that off the list, although I did get to explore the city quite a bit (and made it to a Bulls and Cubs game). Jan: Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Ft Lauderdale Feb: Atlanta, Dallas, Orlando Mar: Milwaukee Apr: Las Vegas May: Ft lauderdale, Put-in-Bay & Middle Bass Island June: Philadelphia, PIB, MBI July: PIB, MBI Aug: PIB, MBI, Appleton WI Sep: PIB, MBI, Orlando, Erie PA Oct: Ft lauderdale, Miami, Bahamas, MBI Nov: No trips planned Dec: Atlanta, Ft Lauderdale My wife is from Florida and her family is there which is why we're there a lot. I have family in Atlanta. We have a cottage on PIB with friends on Middle Bass and go there a lot in the summer. The rest was bachelor parties, weddings, or just visiting friends. I also moved twice during all of this and our son turned 1. It was easy travelling with him, but after the last trip I think we'll have to put plane rides on hold for awhile until he's a bit older...hence we're driving to Ft Lauderdale, via Atlanta, this holiday season :)
October 19, 201113 yr OK. Late Fall road trip itinerary (will go to AAA tomorrow to book it and get the trip tik). Johnstown PA (tip of the hat to Robert Pence for his pix thread on the place which convinced me to visit) Allentown/Bethlehem (staying in downtown Bethlehem) Hartford ("base camp")(visiting w. old Dayton freind now in Hartford) --side trip to NYC --side trip to Boston or Providence. Leaning toward Providence --various Connecticut things Lowell MA (touring the mills) Portland ME (overnight) Lewiston ME (visiting niece at Bates College) North Adams MA and Troy NY (overnight at one of these two, but will stop at both) Syracuse Rochester Buffalo (overnight) Home
February 12, 201213 yr Just revisited my travel list. I've spent this morning buying all the flights to the places I'm traveling. NOT ONE SINGLE FLIGHT COST OVER $250 round trip!!!!!!! The round trip flight to Atlanta was just $130 Some of them were bought through the $65 nonstop flights through Southwest. Also, the #1 benefit of flying out of Chicago is flights are always guaranteed to be cheap. September 2011: Washington DC Traveled to DC end of September October 2011: Pittsburgh Did not happen October 2011: Milwaukee (Riding my bike there!!!!!!!) Did not happen November 2011: Ann Arbor and Detroit Spent a weekend in Ann Arbor and Detroit. November 2011: Saginaw ,MI Thanksgiving December 2011: Saginaw, MI Christmas ADDITION: January 2012: Went to Detroit and Ann Arbor for a Red Wings Hockey Game + Autoshow ADDITION: February 2012: Went to Indianapolis for Superbowl ADDITION March 2012: Cincinnati April 2012: Atlanta, Seattle, and Los Angeles. No Seattle or LA. I'm going to go to Atlanta for an entire week and also hit up Savannah May 2012: Bike ride to Milwaukee May 2012: New York City and Philadelphia June 2012: Minneapolis. Extended my time on this trip so I can explore more of the city July 2012: Toronto August 2012: San Francisco 1 full week. September 2012: Florida. University of Michigan residence hall reunion...looking at a cruise (several days) With the exception of the SF trip already booked, I really only know for certain my trips up until my Atlanta trip. I really need to squeeze LA in there somewhere, and I'd like to go to Pittsburgh It's contingent on how much vacation time I use up on alot of these already planned trips.
February 13, 201213 yr Bike ride to Milwaukee: wow, impressive! Wait, I just realized you live in Chicago, not Ohio. It still sounds like fun.

February 15, 201213 yr ^ I think you meant to say 60 HOURS in advance. A flight from Chicago to Los Angeles for the weekend leaving this Friday evening costs $229 round trip, all fees and taxes included. A flight leaving 60 DAYS from now to the same place for a weekend costs slightly more...probably because of nicer weather, but not by much. Point is, the amount of time you schedule in advance has very little or nothing at all to do with the cost of a flight leaving Chicago. Whether you do it a few days or months and advance the price will still be the same. The only exception is scheduling a last minute flight before a major holiday. Tack on $50-100. What matters is the time you select with morning and afternoon flights being the most expensive. The most I ever paid for a flight out of O'Hare was $400 round trip nonstop to Los Angeles leaving at 7:45 pm. I wish I didn't have to pay that, but it's was scheduled la couple days before 4th of July weekend.

June 29, 201212 yr Alright, the holidays are coming up, where you all going? I'm staying right here in Chicago to enjoy the festivities. I might have traveled but I used a lot of PTO for an Atlanta trip last April and a two week trip to LA and SF this coming August. I got a small day trip to Milwaukee planned later this month and maybe a visit home to the parents in late August. Not quite as busy as 2011 was, but should be a good summer
July 4, 201212 yr I don't travel as much as I'd like to but this year I've been to: Washington DC - March Toronto - June
July 5, 201212 yr Toronto! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
July 5, 201212 yr Later this year, I'm traveling over to South Korea for two weeks for a vacation, with a possible side trip for a half-week to Hawaii. Mansfield, Cleveland - late June, early July Philadelphia, Camden, Trenton, Wilmington, Dover, Annapolis, Baltimore - late June Highlands of West Virginia - early June Western Ohio - mid May South Carolina, Outer Banks North Carolina - Early May Northern Ohio, Cleveland - Early May Highlands of West Virginia - Late April
July 5, 201212 yr I've had a pretty busy year so far with travel - mostly work, but I mix some fun in. In two weeks I am heading to OBX for a family vacation that I am really looking forward to. This year I have been to: CA - San Diego, L.A., Bakersfield OR - Bend, Eugene, Portland AZ - Phoenix, Lake Havasu NV - Las Vegas, Reno NY - Syracuse PA - Williamsport NJ - Newark MN - St. Clould, Rochester VA - suburban DC NE - Lincoln
July 5, 201212 yr I've had a pretty busy year so far with travel - mostly work, but I mix some fun in. In two weeks I am heading to OBX for a family vacation that I am really looking forward to. Check and call NCDOT beforehand. We took the Cedar Island - Ocracoke Island Ferry ($15 and 2 1/4 hours) which was fine, but found out AFTER we got on the island and to the next ferry on NC 12 that the Hatteras Island to Ocracoke Island Ferry had been out for days. We raced back (and was pulled over for speeding - 70 in a 55 - but they were nice about it and waived the fine and called ahead to the Cedar Island ferry) and took the LAST ferry that left the island that evening - at 4 PM. We would have been screwed otherwise - there were no hotel rooms available, and quite a few people were stuck on the island because there was no signage, posting on their web-site, or anything that the Hatteras Island ferry was out.

Hmm - good to know. I have never taken any of the ferries but I am going to a different part this time. Ususally we go up north to Duck/Corolla and I would take the bridge way up north. I did once take the bridge at Manteo. This time we are going to Hatteras and I will be going to the OBX via Asheville and the directions seem to have me go through Manteo. Do you know if there is a ferry that I can take from the mainland to Hatteras that would save me time if I didn't go through Manteo?
July 5, 201212 yr There is the Swan Quarter - Ocracoke Ferry, which is 2.5 hours. Fare and reservations are required, though. That requires taking NC 45 to US 264 from Plymouth. (http://www.outer-banks.com/ferry/) You are probably better off taking US 64 east to Manteo since it's a freeway for the most part, and south via NC 12.
July 5, 201212 yr Philadelphia, Camden, Trenton, Wilmington, Dover, Annapolis, Baltimore - late June Sherman if you haven't been there already, I have to recommend Rehobeth Beach, DE. It's like a classic, West Coast beach town. Lots to do, a nice place to spend a day. Much different and much better layout than 99 percent of other East Coast communities. The water is pristine and boardwalk is immaculate.
July 5, 201212 yr Cool thread! This year so far: "Home" base: Cincinnati (Grad student) March: Fort Myers, Florida.. Jacksonville, Florida.. and Savannah, Georgia Also, Cleveland every month or so (to visit family and go on adventures) Later this year: Beijing, China (work related, but I will be planning other trips while I am there!) San Francisco, California (visit family/adventures) Anyways.. If anyone has any Beijing/China advice, I'd be happy to hear it
July 5, 201212 yr I went to Ann Arbor, as I posted on the thread, a couple of weeks ago. Week after next we are vacationing all week in Ontario, Canada, near the town I grew up going to for annual summer family vacation (Leamington). 2 days after we get back, we are going to Cols to the Ohio State Fair (and spending the night, since it's a long day/drive for little RNR). And then to Mansfield for my 25th, yes, 25th high school reunion.

Great to hear! My mother in law graduated from APHS way back when, she lives like 15 min away and I don't think she's been there in 20 years. For so long Asbury Park was a place to be avoided.... I'm looking forward heading out there soon.
