Probably no one knows, and no one cares to know. He may still have a career somewhere waiting for him, but it likely won't be in Ohio politics.

Fixed, because anywhere he tries to make a comeback his record will follow him.

I'm trying to think about anything distinctive that he's accomplished. Nothing really coming to mind.

Come to think of it, he's perfect for Congress.

It worked for Dennis.

If I understand correctly, the County is supposed to issue an audited budget report by July 1 for the previous year; however there is nothing for 2018 on their website.  Am I wrong about the date or is there a reason for the delay?

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

The budget is available, you just have to go to the basement of the county headquarters, find the storage room that says "Beware of the dog" , and find the public copy in one of the unmarked file cabinets

Somehow there are no 'like' buttons for this thread.  Pretend I clicked the laughing icon.

This inconsistency in issuing or not issuing public reports and disclosures is a symptom of a lack of professionalism in the county's civil service; Cleveland is guilty, too. I blame Budish. He may have been good in the legislature, but, at least from outside appearances, he's no executive. He still wants to be the speaker. a very different role.

Outstanding news - Chris Ronayne is running for Cuyahoga County Executive. He has my vote. He’s done a GREAT job running University Circle.

He'd be an acceptable choice (with the exec abilities Budish lacks profoundly) if not for his advocacy of making ammo difficult to get.   This is worse than making guns tough to buy, because it inhibits training and practicing.

I can't vote for someone who supports that, even for dog catcher.

Thank you for reminding me of another reason to support him.

It would decrease gun safety on an overall basis.

I wonder who Ronayne is supporting for mayor.  Has he stated publicly?   It would be great to get fresh and innovative people in both the county and city exec spots.

It would be wise for him to not endorse, at least in the primary - he needs to work with whoever wins.  No good reason to rub that relationship the wrong way.

Except logic.   More available ammunition means more people practicing and more available classes, most teaching safety.

Chris Royane Stepping Down as President of University Circle Inc. to Campaign For Cuyahoga County Executive

He'll be stepping down Oct. 1. The article gives some of his platform, obviously very broad at this point but nice to see.

Bummed to lose him at University Circle; excited to have him lead Cuyahoga county. Hopefully his campaign is successful.

Apparently Lee Weingart is running for county exec. It would be VERY difficult for someone else to win my vote over Ronayne. Also I can’t for the life of me figure out what one would criticize about Ronayne’s leadership of University Circle. It is much, much better than it was when he took over. (Of course Barb Snyder at CWRU and Bill Griswold at CMA also have had a lot to do with that.)

Also, is this his first announcement? What a garbage way to enter the race. Entirely possible that I missed something, but I’d like to think I follow this stuff pretty closely.

It would be interesting if we have an urbanist (Ronayne) in charge of the county and city (Bibb.)

https://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2021/12/06/maple-heights-mayor-annette-blackwell-to-run-for-cuyahoga-county-executive

Don't count her out.   She's done a good job as Mayor of Maple Heights.   Even the predominantly white "expatriates" who have moved away seem to have a positive view of what she's done.   The people who don't have one mostly talk about crime, which a Mayor can do little about as long as the courts (especially juvenile court) at a county level keep turning loose miscreants.

She supported a gay white councilman who faced a recall election that seemed to be motivated primarily by his race and preferences, she could have played it neutral but did not.  I can't imagine that that will be irrelevant.

^”preferences”? FFS man, what is this, 1950? Get out of here with that ignorant garbage.

I do wonder how turnout will work out, I'm sure R's will be out in full force in the county for this upcoming cycle and I'm sure that'll bode well for anyone with an R next to their name (Exec or otherwise).

I doubt it will be enough.  Swing voters like to add some balance to their ticket, and they are likely to go heavily GOP at the federal level.   That may actually help Dems in the state and local races.

Got the following from PD Editor Chris Quinn in an email discussing the history of the county executive:  "Then came Armond Budish, whose time in office has been calamitous. Our newsroom has chronicled no end of incompetent decision-making and venality in his administration."

Tell me again whom the PD supported for reelection in 2018? It was a tepid endorsement, in fact they recommended the office be made non-partisan, but still ...

As much as I despise certain members of County Council (Simon), County Executive should be appointed by them, as is the case with city managers.

That's not a bad idea to be honest.  Although, as the article states, this is a people problem rather than a system problem.

Truth, but the root of the problem is that an experienced legislator with zero executive experience got elected, with predictable results.

I think that's part of it. Although, I think some legislators can make the move to executive with success. They have to be able to place good advisors in Cabinet roles.

Interesting proposal from Lee Weingart.

I am most intrigued by the idea of the county becoming its own municipality. I did not know that was allowable under state law but apparently it is.

https://www.cleveland.com/data/2022/09/income-taxes-made-easy-maybe-a-first-step-in-making-cuyahoga-countys-cities-villages-a-unifying-force.html

“What I’m proposing is the county would be the levier and collector of the income taxes and then keep none of the money for itself,”

For such a plan to work, state law requires voters to amend the Cuyahoga County charter to create a countywide municipality

^Very interesting.

Huge- this is regionalism.

About damn time. How long have we been talking about regionalizing Cleveland?

I like Weingart's thinking on this around tax sharing, and it doesn't actually preclude further government consolidation steps in the future, including the so-called "Unigov" city-county merger approach in place in several other cities, like Indy, Miami, Louisville, KY, Philly, etc.

My only critique is that it doesn't go far enough, given that Metropolitan Cleveland extends into Lake, Lorain, Geauga, Summit, Portage and Medina counties. A thinking outside of the box approach would at least pull them into some kind of tax-sharing agreement also, if not a multi-county municipality.

The latter is virtually unheard of in the US, however, outside of New York City. But that's all the more reason why it should be considered here in NE Ohio--it could really move economic development forward here on a massive regional scale, in a way that has not been possible in memory.

I wonder why they didn't push for creating a municipal government at county level back when county was reorganized. I also don't quite understand how you can create a countywide municipality while maintaining the current municipalities within it. But it is intriguing.

Everyone should be frightened by this photo. What a Clown show. The county council all dressed in matching outfits. This is the council that is supposed to lead us into the future. To fight and try to attract new tech ventures, new industry, urban development. Most of these people are ready to retire. We're in trouble...
