I’ve always thought the Ohio Bell Building would  be an amazing  hotel conversion if done right  - I don’t know if it would be a particularly difficult building to convert. Probably would be too large not to be a mixed usage project.  I’d love to hear news on that front in the near future. . 

 

Are you referring to the old building on Huron?  There was a proposal to convert part of it to a hotel a few years ago, but it never happened.

Westin Cleveland Downtown hotel is on the verge of closing, lender says in receivership petition

 

"The lender seeking to foreclose on the Westin Cleveland Downtown hotel is asking for a court-appointed receiver to step in to avert a looming shutdown of the 484-room property.

 

Late Monday, March 8, the Cleveland International Fund filed an emergency request for an outside expert to take control of Optima 777 LLC, the company that runs the hotel. In a filing in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, the lender says the Westin is "in imminent danger of closing on March 19, 2021, unless a receivership is put in place." Judge Cassandra Collier-Williams scheduled a hearing on the matter for Wednesday, March 17...."

Yeah.  Best case scenario their is new ownership and management.  That is one of the few hotels I did not want to try out downtown because I read the reviews through the Marriot Bonvoy app and they were awful for that hotel.

I don’t understand what there is to argue. Sherwin Williams will need a hotel. They will build one as part of their HQ master plan or someone else will on a close by parcel. It’s going to happen and it makes total sense. They are thinking long term, not short-to -intermediate term.

Renaissance Hotel plans $80 million renovation

 

More details are coming to light on the renovation of downtown's Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. And that light is revealing a project much larger in scale and value than what had previously been reported. According to information from a source close to the project who was not authorized to speak about it, the 103-year-old hotel will be renovated from top to bottom for up to $80 million.

 

Renovation work is already under way on the 431,352-square-foot structure. Additional work will begin later this year and be completed in Fall 2022. The work will include floor-to-ceiling repairs and updates of all hotel rooms, public spaces, 60,000 square feet of ballrooms/meeting spaces, restaurants and retail spaces. There will also be exterior repairs and improvements made, the source said.

This is badly needed and overdue. This really should be a crown jewel property but it seems to have been let go… the outside of the hotel is a mess. Here’s hoping they can really turn it around. 

Makes some real sense with SHW across the street!

 

Ps- isn't there a really cool office/suite in there from the VS Brothers' time?

You're probably thinking of the Greenbrier Suite, which is the Van Sweringen's apartment in Terminal Tower.

I spend a lot of time in Grand Rapids, and I always wish the entrances to the Renaissance could be treated more like the Amway Grand Plaza: the lights, the plants, outdoor patios etc. would go such a long way to spruce things up and make this side of Public Square more appealing. They've got to do something with that awful box of a ballroom addition and parking garage.

It’s endemic to Cleveland. There’s a community-wide lack of appreciation of creating a nice aesthetic and an incredible ability to ignore shabby maintenance.

It was also a secret - private hallway and stairs connecting the Greenbrier Suites to the hotel to allow the V.S. brothers another private exit and entrance to the Greenbrier Suites. 

 

But during one of the many hotel renovations the connection was sealed many years ago.

I sure hope they do something to improve the facade of the ballroom. It feels like even just painting it to look like it has windows would be an improvement. I fully acknowledge how cheesy that would be, but there’s a building in Milwaukee that actually pulls this idea off pretty well.

 

Oh hey, found a picture of it… Yes, this side of the taller one in the middle is entirely painted like that. The faux reflections are a particularly nice touch.

Looks like they also like a goofy streetlight in Milwaukee just like Cleveland, so I think you might be on to something😃

^^They could clad it in reflective glass too, or something that makes it look less dull, or even put in actual windows!

If not reworked overall, the Ren. Hotel garage and others might (rather than faux windows,) take advantage of "green wall" opportunities, and could seek support from the local philanthropic organizations to aid in this.

It enables the city to draw and host more major events without running out of hotel rooms like it did during the RNC and people had to stay over an hour away. Granted, this is only 62 units, every little piece helps. I wonder if it will have a dedicated space and front desk on the ground floor like typical hotels and maybe a dedicated elevator.

 

Now let's hear about the 21c Hotel in the Baker Bldg and the new Sherwin-Williams-related hotel and the yet-unbranded 160-room hotel that is part of Circle Square!

Roost would have been a nice concept for the hotel at the Arcade.  I'd love to see some live/work tenants in that place.  It needs activity.

I've been trying to find that out from Geis which handles leasing at May Co. but so far no luck.

 

CORRECTION: they stopped handling leasing at May about a month ago.

I don't know about that (although I have no idea how May is leasing).  A deal like this just doesn't pop out of thin air.  I am sure it took a while to negotiate, especially if it involves two properties.  Are all three floors contiguous or scattered around making up three floors.  That might be another sign of a long negotiation.  They might have had plans for the hotel even before leasing began.

Downtown moves may signal historic renovation project

 

In the coming months, look for two downtown Cleveland tenants to switch addresses. And they're moving from one historic to another historic building, according to a tweet last week by the Downtown Cleveland Alliance.

 

Dave's Cosmic Subs and Souper Market will both move from the Baker Building, 1900 E. 6th St., to the Standard Apartments, 99 W. St. Clair Ave. At the Standard, they will join Simply Fresh Market CLE, a small grocer offering fresh and prepared foods. The Standard was renovated in 2018 for $60 million by the Weston Group into 287 apartments with ground-floor retail.

Its about time we got a "W" Hotel Downtown!

 

"The looming redevelopment of the 40-story Tower at Erieview will bring a W hotel — a luxury brand — to downtown Cleveland. Members of the Kassouf family have inked a deal with Marriott International Inc. to add a 210-room W to the project. The Kassoufs are planning a $90 million-plus revamp of the 1960s office tower, where apartments, lodging and a 38th-floor restaurant will fill ample vacancies. Operated by Marriott, the W would be downtown's second luxury hotel. The only other property of that caliber in the central business district is the Ritz-Carlton Cleveland, which opened in 1991 and was renovated a few years ago....."

Maybe the Kassouf kids are a different breed than the old man because if they are anything like Parkin Lot Jim this is just another in a string of announced and never built projects. I'll believe it when l see it.

That photo must have been the bar/lounge area.  I don't recall tables in the dining area being so close.

That photo was indeed the bar area. Look how small the tables are. I loved that restaurant and really hope a new restaurant opens up in that space as planned. There's no other venue in CLE like it. Even the bar at the top of the Hilton is just that--a bar, though with some things to nibble on.

That hotel would have been nice on the Jacobs lot. Oh well.
