Unlikely. FAA wouldn't allow it. And I don't think the Rock Hall would want to have Hard Rock as a neighbor.  But I'd like to see the Hard Rock Cafe reopened and JACK Casino rebranded as a Hard Rock.

I don't see why the FAA would object if built south of the current footprint of the Rock Hall and FE Stadium.   Both our outside of the runway safety areas.

A little disappointing that they’re removing the fountain but I guess it’s not actually original. I think it was added in the 90s.

Only two of those hotel projects are definites. One is a maybe. Two others aren't looking very good anymore.

Care to say which is which?

I would have if I could have. Hopefully soon.

Delta and Fedelity are definite.  The Renaissance is underway and the W in a perhaps.

Renaissance and Fidelity are already underway. Delta the maybe?

That would my guess.  The Delta folks have put a lot of effort into the project so far I can tell.  I believe they might have some public subsidies. Never thought the W was actually going to be a thing.  The Kassouff's would have trouble following through on a Days Inn let alone that high end brand.

Edited by Htsguy

By the way, if the Kassouff's significantly alter their project from what was outlined to the state in their TMUD application, do they lose the credit?  I would think losing the hotel or even switching brands would be a significant alteration.  How fair is it to the other applicants when you attest  you are going to one thing and then significantly change your project once you got the award.

i dk, this recent bloggy discussion suggests it may still be on the burner for hyatt:

If they do build it, I'd rather see it closer to the CBD rather than in midtown.

I’m the opposite. Midtown needs a shot in the arm like this.

Unfortunately, Midtown hotels of that scale are proving to be very difficult to do.

Bridgeworks is the one l want to see. Still holding out hope for that project.

Imagine you're in town for the first time on business. lt's a late summer afternoon, you decide to go for a little walk. You cross the street and... what's this? A sweeping hillside park very alive with people enjoying the view. Hey look. There's river traffic too. This is Cleveland? I guess I'll have to elevate my preconceptions a bit. It just got interesting.

Here's hoping. What's really sobering is the thought of not being able to complete this comparatively modest project in what's arguably CLE's hottest neighborhood.

I would file this one under the "strong maybe" category. They are finalizing their capital stack.

They took the elevator down. This still happening? Or was that for the demo phase?

Could be a coincidence but I like how this hotel released plans what felt like ages ago and never heard from again and then as soon as the Irishtown Bend park crosses the last hurdle before construction we see these plans which, from what I remember, seem to have increased in size from the original plan?

Bodes well that and really shows that parks are a huge draw for new development. Not saying this wouldn't have happened eventually but I'm sure the park could have spurred it on quicker. I'm excited to see what else may pop up in all that empty space on W25th!! Got a few big parking lots I would love to see disappear (although I know those are longshots it seems)

The caption for the render in that article is like meticulously obfuscating.

Very glad to hear a reconfirmation that they will soon be adding the Hotel Cleveland sign atop the roof!!

This should be pretty fabulous …

I couldn't tell if they are removing the fountain from the hotel lobby to replace it with a bar feature

I think that is the plan- I was originally bummed about that but the fountain isn’t actually original. It was added in the 90s I believe.

Last time I was there, the fountain area was being used for what looked like a private cocktail party. Have to say I liked the old, almost cozy bar.

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

That overwrought 90s fountain was such an ill fitting throw down to me. It was fine as fountains go and the sound was pleasing, but I won't miss it in exchange for the sensitively re-imagined new use of that interior.  I would often see kids enjoying the big fountain, yet it was a monolith that was never a match for the elegant proportions of the historic lobby.

Over the past few years, I'd stopped bringing guests to the Renaissance or recommending it. The luster has been long gone, except to view the holiday decorations and skaters on the ice over hot toddies. This latest transformation is a thrill for me.  That ballroom is getting what it needed.  It looks the same today as it did in the early 80s; when we partied all night to the WBBG Big Band Orchestra in a swing dance marathon fundraiser. There were a few Red Cross Balls here and there in the 90s when the room looked great, but it was showing it's age even then.

-Welcome Hotel Cleveland! There won't be anyplace like it in town.

^ huh, i remember liking the fountain during a couple stays there back then. however, after your very thoughtful response i agree with you. its time for the lobby to be modernized more thoughtfully. hopefully the pool area too, which is pretty cool, but needs updated.

the return of the signage on the roof is just beyond awesome. what a great and inviting throwback look that will be.

Does any UO have a status update on the "Hotel Cleveland"/ Renaissance renovation?

From the Marriott website: "he Renaissance Cleveland is currently undergoing a full transformation. As we prepare for a new hotel and new brand in 2024, the lobby has been closed to the public and the front desk, bar and breakfast restaurant have been temporarily relocated to the first floor."  I happened in a couple of weeks ago, and literally you have to go under (to the right of) the main stair well to enter what, long ago, was their breakfast room.  That is where the front desk and "bar" is now located.   FWIW, I'd skip it until they fully re-open.

No idea on the interior, but they’re still working on installing the new windows and exterior brick/tuck pointing repair. They’re doing a very thorough renovation it appears.

I’ve been really impressed with the Autograph Hotels we’ve stayed at so far. Spent a staycation night at the Renaissance in January and it was pretty rough. If the floorplans of the rooms remain the same (I can’t see them changing) there are some real challenges with room size and the atrium rooms.

We really have a fantastic selection of hotels in converted historic buildings though. I’m hopeful that we can get a 4+ star new build soon. Despite the good number of rooms downtown it seems occupancy and rates are high lately compared to other cities we’ve traveled.

If you are suggesting the rooms are currently very small, I hate to have seen what the rooms were like when it was originally built.  I believe it was originally something like an 800 room hotel, but during the huge renovation about 40 years ago the rooms were made bigger by cutting the number to just over 400.

Same here that's what I was wondering I don't recall seeing any renderings, interior or exterior.

I've been in contact with them for a hotel block for a wedding of mine. They said renovations are slated to be complete by June/July 2024. Here are some renderings from their contract:

I stayed there last summer and I thought the room size was pretty good actually.  The layout of the room was kind of weird though, so maybe that was a function of having been combined with another room at some point in the past.

Is there any info on when the Hotel Cleveland renovation will be completed?  Also, how are things progressing with the Fidelity Hotel on E 6th and Delta Hotel on Euclid in midtown?

Meh, ya can't see much if anything from the street but I'll admit I haven't creeped from a parking garage in a few months. They've been working consistently throughout, though.

I'm still afraid for this lobby. notice the celings are white. I hope they don't brighten it too much and sterilize a once cozy room.
