November 17, 201113 yr I'm want to see concrete plans. The Aloft, and Westin are the only properties confirmed. AND we still do not have a "convention" size property, nor a mix of brands/loyalty programs. We are way behind the 8 ball with this. Sure we have a mix of brands, pretty much everyone's low end flag. Except Marriot. We have low end, as you said but we don't have a mix from a consumer stand point. In Cleveland (downtown specifically) if you're a Marriott loyalist, you can do ok. Granted we don't have JW Marriott or Marriott Marquis. If I'm Starwood (W, St. Regis, Luxury Collection, Sheraton, Westin [speak as of today]) I'm screwed! We're missing a lot of brands from a business traveler perspective, convention host perspective and leisure traveler perspective. If I'm a Hilton person where am I going to stay? The Garden Inn, Embassy Suites or Double Tree. We have no full service Hilton, Conrad or Waldorf=Astoria. We have above average Whyndham. If I want an InterContinental Brand I can only stay in UC. What about?: Best Western (the largest operator of hotels in the world) Choice privileges Fairmont Omni Pennisula Swissotel Mandarin Four Seasons Loews Kimpton I know listing the others is a stretch, but we don't even have the majors covered. If I'm a corporate planner I'm going to first look at Hilton, Starwood, Marriott & Hyatt (Park Hyatt, Grand Hyatt, Hyatt, ) since they are the major players. We don't have brand diversity. If I'm a planner with people coming from all parts of just the States, Cleveland doesn't even get a look because we don't have the portfolio. PERIOD. If I'm a leisure traveler, let say gay. We don't have any brands that are target gay friendly such as the W (huge gay target audience), Westin [as of today], Andaz [launched to compete with the W], or Palomar. If I'm a 30 something leisure traveler who is in Cleveland for Business and wants to extend my stay (solo or so my family can join me), I can't stay and use points for a night/additional nights at a Westin, Park or Grand Hyatt, Conrad, Sofitel, Loews. Nor an urban Hilton, Sheraton, Raddison or Marriott. We get screwed. The city needs to start building hotels or renovation building and turning them into hotels today! If we don't redoing the Convention Center will be a waste! Very true that there is a dearth of properties right now. But honestly was there a point for Hotels to invest in DT Cleveland. There was no Convention Center, and tourist activities (Museums for the most part) were fairly disparate. Now that the Convention Center is being rebuilt, and the UC museums are connected with the HealthLine there does seem to be more interest in expanding brands into the area. Starwood ( Westin and posible La Meridian) and Kimpton (Shoefield Bldg and I think they may have been connected to the BOE building) are involved with specific properties.

Also, I've been watching Kimpton releases and nothing is confirmed, which makes me suspicious.

Right now I don't think the building as a whole is a done deal. Close and probably 90ish % a done deal, but not completely. How many CC sized hotels opened at the same time as a new CC? Because to be honest that is what this is, a brand new CC. It may therefore be difficult to project demand. If the demand isn't there (hopefully it is) then obviously nothing will get built.

January 11, 201213 yr It also appears they were illustrating what it may look like during the day (slide 15) vs the night (slide 16). This is going to make that dark section of downtown so much brighter and inviting. Very Exciting.
January 11, 201213 yr One minor annoyance with the Westin redesign shown in the renderings: it would be swell if the new garage treatment would fully wrap around E. 6th instead of leaving that reveal of the parking decks. That block of East 6th has really gotten the shaft over the years.
January 11, 201213 yr The Crowne Plaza/Westin Cleveland is having a liquidation sale. The sale starts tomorrow at 9am and run until 6pm. If you need china, flatware, glasses, gym equipment, mirros, gentle used towels, possibly a TV, this is the place to look on the cheap!

Are these just for ideas of what a facade on this property could look like? Yes, note the captions of "Metal Mesh System Examples" and "Lighting Examples", respectively, on those slides. These were concepts of what could be done, based on what's been done (or proposed) elsewhere. Personally, I like the "colorwash" presented on Slide 16. It fits with what's been done on the Tower City spire and City Hall's lakeside face in the past, and offers a branding opportunity that's not obnoxious.
January 18, 201213 yr An "update" on the new Westin in Crains...... Although we already knew all of this, so I thought I was missing a piece of the article. Nope. So Im not really sure what they are announcing. Starwood Hotels announces details of planned Westin hotel in downtown Cleveland 2:34 pm, January 18, 2012 Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. (NYSE: HOT) has announced details of its planned Westin hotel in downtown Cleveland that will replace the former Crowne Plaza hotel at East Sixth Street and St. Clair Avenue. http://www.crainscleveland.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20120118/FREE/120119837

January 20, 201213 yr This isn't hotel--or apartment--news yet, but perhaps could be: The Standard Bldg is up for sale. "The nation's oldest labor union is putting its headquarters building on the market, in a bet that downtown Cleveland projects will boost investor zeal for sites near Public Square. The railroad union, now called the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, constructed the Standard Building in 1924 to house the country's first labor bank. Now the group has publicly listed the property for sale, for the first time in its history. The Chartwell Group real estate brokerage is marketing the 21-story building, at Ontario Street and Saint Clair Avenue, for $8.8 million...." http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/01/railroad_union_nations_oldest.html [Cross-posted in the Downtown Residencies thread.]
January 20, 201213 yr I wonder what happened to the planned mural on the backside of the building. This is interesting news, it's such a fantastic building. Hope they can clean it up and further improve the look.
February 2, 201213 yr City Planning Commission Agenda for February 3, 2012 Ordinance No. XXX-12(Ward 3/Councilman Cimperman): Authorizing the Director of Economic Development to enter into a loan agreement for $1,000,000 of UDAG funding with Optima 777, LLC or its designee, for the construction/renovation of a 450 room Westin Hotel at 777 St. Clair Avenue. http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/designreview/drcagenda/2012/02032012/index.php "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
February 16, 201213 yr CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A City Council committee has endorsed a $1 million loan for a hotel near the site of a new convention center and medical mart, but the owners' suggestion of building a connecting walkway met some resistance. Councilman Jeffrey Johnson opposes the walkway, saying it would ruin a scenic view of City Hall to the north. He said the view was part of the 1903 Group Plan for downtown public buildings. Some council members also have said they are worried that a bridge would jeopardize the auditorium's status as a historic building. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/02/cleveland_council_committee_ok.html Just wanted to let you all know that there will soon be a campaign to halt the Westin skywalk to preserve the vista of City Hall as described by Councilman Johnson in this article. More info to come. I know some of you here disapprove of Johnson, especially considering his "storied" past, but regardless of whatever his motivation may be for helping us on these preservation issues, I think it is honorable that some public official is responding to public outcry on these issues.
February 16, 201213 yr I used to disapprove, but I like everything he's done since the whole UC-apartment debacle. He's the only elected official in the city who consistently stands up for historical preservation.
February 17, 201213 yr New hotel at 21 Prospect? Anyone know what this guy is talking about? Address-wise this would have to be right at Ontario just about. "A hotel will be built at 21 Prospect Ave., Tilted Kilt a new restaurant will open at East 9th and Euclid Avenue and that could be just the beginning, as more national retailers become interested in Cleveland’s new casino, medical mart and rebuilt convention center." http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/news/local_news/cleveland_metro/new-casino-could-attract-more-shopping-and-other-businesses-to-downtown-cleveland
February 17, 201213 yr Author That was posted in another thread. I said there that I believe they just got it backwards. New hotel at Euclid and East 9th, and new restaurant(tilted kilt) at 21 Prospect Avenue is whats really happening.
February 17, 201213 yr ClevelandOhio is absolutely correct. 21 Prospect is The Tilted Kilt location. http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/designreview/brd/detailDR.php?ID=548&CASE=DF%202011-070
February 17, 201213 yr ^Darn! I was hoping there was some mysterious new hotel coming about. Okay....thanks for the correction.
February 19, 201213 yr I read somewhere that the Renaissance Hotel is renovating all 491 rooms as well as the club lounge, which started January 1 and will continue through March. Anyone know if this is true?
February 19, 201213 yr I've been there since Jan 1, and didn't see any evidence of this, but they could be doing a good job of just containing the work and materials/workers to the current floor. but there was no 'construction dumpster' or other areas roped off on the street that you normally see during such work even if its floor by floor.
February 20, 201213 yr Just heard the Holiday Inn Express at 6th & Euclid is closed and being 'rebranded'. Not sure what its turning into... I was just there 2-3 weeks ago and it was open.
February 20, 201213 yr I've been there since Jan 1. You're temporarily living there? Is work putting you up?
February 20, 201213 yr ^ah--its confusing. mrclifton88 asked about work that was to begin on January 1. I was there ONCE sometime in January---and so i said, i had been there 'since' the date in question---i did not mean I had been there 'continuously' since that date. That said, it would be cool to live there for a couple of months. I could check out Public Square at all hours of the night just by stumbling outside!
February 20, 201213 yr The Holiday Inn Express no longer has a website... HI is owned by InterContinental group... we already have an IC plus an IC suites but I was doing some investigating and I see another brand they own is Indigo; a boutique hotel brand. Supposedly "each Hotel Indigo property is designed to reflect the culture, character and history of the surrounding neighbourhood. Many of them are in converted buildings." This also happens to be the brand that was going to be in the Ameritrust tower, but that fell through. I'm guessing their concept would fit the building, but of course Im just speculating on what might be going on there, plus I'm thinking that would mean a total remodel.
February 20, 201213 yr That could very well be. I'm just really surprised to not hear anything about before it closed (especially on here!). Good point about hotel Indigo. It is their boutique brand, and nothing too special, but they did want in to the market and it is likely a better fit than a Holiday Inn Express for that building. The Indigo's have been expanding quickly in the past couple of years. One will be opening in Columbus this or next year I believe.

I'm all for brands expanding into our market, but this is one we should pass on.

February 20, 201213 yr With the closing of Holiday Inn Express--which was relatively new--and the closing of the two main Holiday Inns downtown ("Lakeside" and "Downtown" [21st and Euclid]), the brand is gone from Downtown. Is that true in other cities' downtowns as well? (I know we now have two IC's in Midtown we didn't have before, but I'm talking specifically about Holiday Inn.)

Is that true in other cities' downtowns as well? (I know we now have two IC's in Midtown we didn't have before, but I'm talking specifically about Holiday Inn.) We've always had two IC at the Clinic. The original and then the new was built during the last decade. Holiday Inn's are having a tough go. Those families that grew up with HI see them as dated and antiquated compared to other cost conscientious brands it competes with. HI pumped money into the Crown Plaza brand to compete with Sheraton, Hilton and Marriott. HI traditionally competes with Best Western and lower end brands.
February 20, 201213 yr Holiday Inn has always struck me as more of a suburban/airport hotel; it's a place you stay while on a road trip or a cheap business flight. To compare to everyone's favorite urban planning city, Portland OR has one on the northern boundary between downtown and the Port of Portland, and a few near the airport. The rest are scattered out around the suburbs. Additionally IHG is launching new brands in the near future: IHG’s new brands to launch within five months DURHAM, England—Executives at InterContinental Hotels Group during an earnings call Tuesday unveiled further details about the launch of the company’s previously announced brands. The first new brand will be an upper-upscale product tailored to the Chinese traveler. The second will be a midscale offering primarily focused in the United States, for which IHG will invest up to US$150 million during the initial three-year launch phase. Both brands will launch during the first half of 2012, said CEO Richard Solomons. http://www.hotelnewsnow.com/Articles.aspx/7531/IHGs-new-brands-to-launch-within-five-months

Installed wood floors, added new big flat-screen tvs, and put tempur-pedic mattresses in all their rooms. They also have done some work to their lobby/offices. Haven't heard about any re-branding, but it's possible with all the upgrades.

Im all for positive movement downtown, but lets not embelish. Per the article Finally, nearly across the street from the Kinpton project, work has begun to consolidate five formerly separate properties into what is expected to be a new Le Meridien Hotel. Expected and confirmed are two different things. Ive made a call and will report back. As long as its an upscale Westin or LM I'll be satisfied as Starwood has long ignored the Cleveland market. I know what ever happens. I strongly expect to see a Hilton built as a result of 3 Starwood properties coming online in Downtown Cleveland.

March 8, 201213 yr :) Sorry I was just excited! Thanks mytwosense for checking into this. I remember there were already detailed plans regarding this property when it was still going to be a Westin including interior features etc. I wonder if it IS going to be a LM will they just use the existing plans or modify for the new brand.

So this is most likely a LM. That's not necessarily true we could have two of the same branded hotels. Its not unheard of. Seen as you are a renowned world traveler ;) can you point us to another similar sized city with two hotels of the same brand in their Downtown. I just feel that outside of a city that is purely tourism we couldn't support two Westin's. Different brands from the same corp absolutely, but the same brand would be competing with each other. Seen as we're playing a little speculation, where do you think a Hilton would go/work. My guess would be over in one of the Warehous district lots, especially if the RTA transit station/Residential tower goes through.
