Driven fence posts are sometimes used because 1) they are cheaper than rented fence panels/stanchions and 2) are not necessary to move like the fence panels can.  If they started added top and bottom rail, then I'd read more into it.

The fence is temporary. In fact, design review required an open chain link so the building would remain in view during construction.

In the "Dossier Cleveland" insert into UA's Hemisphere's magazine for February, on P. 22, it says,

"CLE [Hopkins is] planing to open a new 250-room upscale airport hotel in 2016."

2016 is not that far away---anyone have any details?

The left side of that image looks like a parking garage!?!?!?  Are there plans to rebuild the airport garage??

That portion of the garage was never torn down...

Ahhh, I havnt been out by the airport in a while, but had heard about the garage being taken down.  Just figured that it was the whole garage.

Thanks jfristik.

Try this link, it's not there yet though, but check back because it looks like this is the place where they post them:

No worries! It was very confusing the way it was reported. There were actually two big parking garages. The much older, structurally unstable parking garage was farther east of the newer parking garage. The two were connected by sky bridge, which the last time I saw still stands as a bridge to nowhere. The newer garage that was not demolished also had mini LED displays installed over every parking space that light up red when occuppied and green when vacant. It is a nice addition that makes finding a parking spot much easier.

The bridge to nowhere is still there, but they are adding a stair entry on the end of it to the new "Orange" surface lot.  Hopefully someday there will be another structure here after Cleveland finds its way out of the current economic depression.

well, i doubt they will need the new hotel now becasue of united de-hubing Cleveland

Although the airport wants to diversify its revenue stream to reduce the various airport fees. It's a chicken-and-egg situation, and we've seen municipalities spend millions in taxpayer funds in their attempts to keep their airports busy (see Pittsburgh, St. Louis or Cincinnati). Of course, those aren't exactly the best examples since flight operations and enplanements have been slashed at those cities 40-70 percent since 2007. But it shows how eager cities are in trying to keep their airports as economic drivers.

But we'll have to see how things play out. FYI, discussion of the airport hotel is suitable for this thread. But UAL's decision should be discussed here: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,3010.0.html

This is a big improvement over the old dark drab façade.

From the Westin web site, the hotel is now supposed to open in May instead of April, so there is a little delay.

^Definitely an improvement

Renaissance Cleveland Hotel is on the block

Sources say brokers are shopping marquee spot

By STAN BULLARD

With Cleveland focused on growing its meeting business and bidding for a national political convention in 2016, a big change may be shaping up at the city's largest and oldest downtown hotel thanks to the family half a world away that owns it.

According to three sources who asked not to be identified, the Chicago-based hotel brokerage unit of Jones Lang LaSalle is shopping the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel on behalf of its owner, CTF Development Inc., which is led by the Cheng family of Hong Kong, a global power in the hotel business.

well, that is big hotel news for sure, but cle has become quite an active hotel market and its the perfect time to sell before the big cc hotel opens and all the rest comes online.

so its not necessarily a bad thing at all.

i wonder who will buy it?

what other name brand that likes historic hotels do we need in town?

I dont think this is a big deal.  Hotels change hands (and brand/loyalty programs) all the time.

Due to the historic nature of this property, it could be an opportunity for a brand like Four Seasons, Fairmount, Peninsula, Sofitel or a Klimpton brand to move in.  Other brands that would fit in to this historic property are St. Regis or W (Starwood), Conrad or Waldorf=Astoria (Hilton).

If the new owner retains Marriott as the Management and Loyalty program, maybe an upgrade from the Renaissance to the JW Marriott Moniker.

We dont have a Mandarin or Swizzotel, but I think those would be a stretch for our market.

Cleveland is a Marriott town, but if things in Cleveland happen as they did in Philly, DC, Indi and ALT, all former Marriott centric cities, after they upgraded their convention facilities Starwood and Hilton will up their game.

The one difference is, Marriott is bringing an Autograph to Ninth Street.  Will the regional management and current owner feel the need to keep the historic public square property?    The Autograph customer is more likely to stay at the W (starwood), Andaz (Hyatt) and is a higher end modern customer

Will Marriott Management/Current owner feel as though the new property will cannibalize the Renaissance?  However, if they turn it into a JW Marriott, it’s in a new category.  Another question is, what is Gilbert doing with the Ritz-Carlton?  Will it stay a R-C?  If not, perhaps the Renaissance rebrands as a R-C?  This way it’s still a Marriott brand and in a new category.

^That's a great summary of whats going on in the market MTS.  It will be interesting to see how things shake out over the next few years with new hotels coming online and potentially a very big, political convention giving Cleveland spotlight and putting us into the major leagues for conventions and tourism.  Hopefully this encourages more luxury brands to open or current properties to be rebranded "up" like the new Westin did.

Thanks, it is important to note, until we have 15k rooms or more in the downtown/CBD  hotel, we'll never be in the Major leagues.

The Westin is not a luxury brand.

True, I was more speaking of the Westin being a step up from the Crown Plaza that preceded it, and with this announcement regarding the Renaissance, my hope is it will move up as well.  Either way these seem to be good times for the Cleveland hotel market.

Another "magical" number needed like the 25k residents for downtown.  Does anyone know if there is a standard/typical housing units to hotel room relationship to be considered healthy?  Such as, a strong CBD will have 1 hotel room for every 2 housing units.  I'm guessing not since the economics of the two are different but just pondering...

Letters going up!!! emadegyd.jpg

Im really loving the makeover. Those new windows look great

Such an improvement!

Update: it's up! e2yja7a3.jpg

Impressive

I wish they would have covered the entire garage with glass.

Yes I was hoping that screening material over the garage would be more opaque than what appears. Unless there is more to be done idk.

It changes based on the sun and angle of where you are. Sometimes it's very see-through and when it's reflecting it looks very solid.

wow what a change for the better!

^^Nice.

Looking good! I do wish though that the lower section could have been all glass over the parking deck. Probably not feasible with exhaust, but it could have been more glass. Kinda looks odd in my eyes how it is

holy crap i would swear thats a render!

Are those old car guard rails getting updated in the parking garage?  They look so old and ugly!  My eyes go right to them whenever I'm walking or driving by.

Although it is an improvement, this isn't all that good in my opinion.  It's going to seem dated really quick.  Heck, it already is.  That garage outcome is a disaster.

Yes I am holding my breath on that also. I'm hoping that will be the last thing to do. Any type of cosmetic improvement would help. Although I look at the render and it doesn't look much different. That would be a shame if that got past design review.

As the Sheraton or Bond Court--I don't remember the parking garage being so blatant. Looks like the Westin is trying to show it off. That can't be the final exterior to conceal the garage, is it???

Before the renovation, the garage was hidden behind a brick lattice, and was essentially invisible, if a bit forbidding.  If this is the final look, it is a design disaster; and may be the most in-your-face garage in town.  What a waste of a $65M renovation.  Will Westin tout its new, art laiden grand staircase to event planners by pointing at the façade and saying "yeah, right there, between the rape van and the pick-up truck."

I totally agree...It just seems like the exterior of the building was just put together without any thought. The only thing I like about it is the new glass windows. Other than that I hate the brown combined with the grey, beige, and white. They should have just used grey and the lighter color.
