June 3, 201411 yr Took a tour Saturday night of the Westin. The event space is really impressive and large. I have to say the whole time all I could think of was that I hope something is done about the Lincoln Building ASAP. What an eyesore!!!
June 6, 201411 yr Cleveland Clinic buys former church land, expects Holiday Inn construction to start in late summer By Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on June 05, 2014 at 4:15 PM, updated June 05, 2014 at 5:17 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland Clinic paid $1 million this week for a piece of Euclid Avenue land, where construction could start in late summer on a 276-room Holiday Inn. Real estate records show that the Cleveland Clinic Foundation acquired the property, where the Church of the Transfiguration stood until early this year, on Wednesday. The seller was the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio. In an email Thursday, a Clinic spokeswoman said the hospital system and InterContinental Hotels Group expect to open their Holiday Inn, a $40 million project, in early 2016. The hotel will fill the lodging void left by the Clinic's Guesthouse, a nearby building that was razed last year to make room for a new Case Western Reserve University medical education complex. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2014/06/cleveland_clinic_buys_former_c.html#incart_more_business
June 11, 201411 yr New sign going up. Only difference I see is black letters but that helps. You couldn't see the old one in the day time.
June 11, 201411 yr I checked out the Westin lobby area and Urban Farmer over Memorial Day... Very impressive and a serious upgrade of the Crowne Plaza it replace.
June 11, 201411 yr Yep, a massive upgrade. And just a FYI, the outdoor patio is expected to open this coming weekend. I believe they had issues getting permission from the city to use that space to serve food and alcohol, but I was told it should be cleared up by this weekend.
June 11, 201411 yr ^OK now it makes sense. UF was busy, but I wondered why nobody was sitting outside, even though tables and chairs were set up out there.
June 15, 201410 yr New signage looking nice this weekend. The patio appears still not to be open, but they were painting it this weekend, so hopefully any day now while we are having this great weather!!! Cool cowboy mural on the wall now!
June 16, 201410 yr BTW, I liked the old sign so much better. My wife, child and I rode our bikes there for Saturday brunch. The food was excellent. I think they did an amazing job on this hotel. Cleveland should be proud. The local art is fabulous. The giant head in the lobby is really cool until you get closer and realize it made out of thousands of small tree sapling pieces which is even cooler than expected. If that piece was at the Cleveland Art Museum, it would be one of my favorite pieces. Anyone know the artist?
June 16, 201410 yr The new sign doesn't look as unique/good as the rustic old sign - and also doesn't look like the new sign rendering - which appeared to be more of a highway guardrail with lettering...
June 16, 201410 yr From the roof of the Terminal Tower. https://www.instagram.com/cle_and_beyond/https://www.instagram.com/jbkaufer/
June 16, 201410 yr I think the building looks great. There was some reservation (even on part of some Marous employees) on how the EIFS would perform in an urban setting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exterior_insulation_finishing_system Aesthetically, looking good. I suppose time will be the true test.
June 17, 201410 yr I wish The Westin would have some up-lighting on the upper facade. IIRC, most hotels avoid this so they don't have glare inside room. As a light sleeper, that would annoy me.

The building started as an incredible eyesore, however, so the project is still a win.
June 18, 201410 yr "Downtown Cleveland Ritz-Carlton Hotel to undergo exterior upgrade By STAN BULLARD 2:18 pm, June 18, 2014 Downtown Cleveland’s Ritz-Carlton Hotel is in line for exterior upgrading as competition among the city’s hotels heats up with new properties and the just-completed transformation of the Westin Cleveland Hotel." http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20140618/FREE/140619780/downtown-cleveland-ritz-carlton-hotel-to-undergo-exterior-upgrade Pictures from the agenda. Now I wish they would utilize the old Century restaurant space on a full-time basis...
June 23, 201410 yr In case anyone was wondering, the patio is open now at the Westin (Urban Farmer). It actually has nice view of E 6th and St. Clair.

August 30, 201410 yr Westin shuts down for 1 day. http://www.wkyc.com/story/news/local/cleveland/2014/08/30/new-westin-hotel-to-shut-down-on-monday/14860171/
September 11, 201410 yr Toured the new Westin. I think they did a great job upgrading the aging space. The meeting rooms and public areas are much improved. We have booked our annual meeting at the Westin in January, after having it in Dominican Republic or Nassau the last few years. Glad to keep it home, and keeping it positive with our sales force who are grumbling about Cleveland in January.
September 15, 201410 yr Delayed Kimpton Hotel set to open downtown in 2015 The developer of the Schofield Building in the heart of downtown Cleveland has set a mid-2015 opening for the Kimpton Hotel and apartments under construction in the historic building. September 22, 201410 yr Not just a downtown update, but also some eastside and especially West Shore hotel projects as this is from a Lorain County paper...... Checking in on the new hotels planned for Cleveland by 2016 By Janet Podolak, The News-Herald POSTED: 09/21/14, 7:32 PM EDT Cleveland’s historic old bones are being revealed as the city prepares for the 2016 Republican National Convention with hotels, new transportation options and a bright new upbeat attitude among its people. “There’s a new vibe and sense of confidence happening throughout Cleveland — something our community has not felt in decades,” said David Gilbert, CEO of Positively Cleveland, the city’s convention and visitors bureau, via email. “Right now, Cleveland is enjoying a renaissance along with the benefits of billions of dollars in new public and private development and improvements. The city is stronger and healthier than it has been in a long time, and these new hotels capitalize on a growing tourism and meetings market here in Cleveland.” READ MORE AT: http://www.morningjournal.com/lifestyle/20140922/checking-in-on-the-new-hotels-planned-for-cleveland-by-2016 "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
August 12, 20159 yr James Swingos has passed at 73. I still think someone should recreate it in modern, boutique hotel fashion. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2015/08/james_swingos_owner_of_former_1.html
August 12, 20159 yr Skyline International Development Inc. enters contract to purchase Renaissance Hotel for about $20 million http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,11531.msg768048.html#msg768048 "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
August 12, 20159 yr James Swingos has passed at 73. I still think someone should recreate it in modern, boutique hotel fashion. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2015/08/james_swingos_owner_of_former_1.html It would be a great themed boutique hotel, playing on it's history of all the celebrity's that stayed during it's time. Maybe in conjunction with the RockHall somehow with rooms named after Sinatra, Elvis, Zeppelin etc... with plaques and photo's of what star stayed in what room. Decorate the rooms as they were back then. It's definitely a historic hotel, I hope someone can see the possibilities.
November 18, 20159 yr Renaissance Hotel sale was recorded by the county on Oct. 28: PUBLIC SQUARE & 301 SUPERIOR CLEVELAND Sales Date 10/28/2015 Amount $18,150,000 Buyer SKYLINE CLEVELAND RENAISSANCE, LLC Seller PUBLIC SQ HOTEL COMMUNITY Deed type LIMITED WA Land value $3,483,800 Building value $0 Total value $3,483,800 Parcels 101-23-006B + 101-23-007 + 101-23-010 + 101-23-011B Property Hotels "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
November 18, 20159 yr Building value= $0? What's the point of these records when the values assigned seldom seems to mean anything?
November 18, 20159 yr ^I think the data retrieval system only pulls info from one (the first?) listed parcel when a deed transfers more than one. If you look up the second parcel listed above on the county website, it shows a $22M+ building value. And to be clear, the land/building values are those assigned by the fiscal officer for tax calculations, not the amount a buyer paid for the property.
December 29, 20159 yr 1980s-style development is alive and well on the east side.... Chagrin Highlands could gain Drury hotel, restaurants, offices on 78-acre Orange site By Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer on December 29, 2015 at 10:00 AM, updated December 29, 2015 at 10:27 AM ORANGE, Ohio – Add more offices, restaurants and a hotel – likely a Drury Inn & Suites – to the potential lineup at Chagrin Highlands, the expansive East Side corporate park just off Interstate 271 at Harvard Road. The Richard E. Jacobs Group of Westlake is turning its attention to a 78-acre stretch of the 630-acre property, which straddles four suburbs. This particular piece of land, in the tiny village of Orange, sits south of Harvard and east of 271, across the freeway from the Harvard Park shopping center and the Cleveland Marriott East. December 29, 20159 yr More sprawl. At least Drury's downtown BOE HQ-converted hotel will best this new one in Sprawlville by 19 rooms.
December 29, 20159 yr Oh man a Drury on the east side? This one might send MTS over the top...I'm very concerned
December 29, 20159 yr Since there's a market (almost surprisingly) still there for this type of development, at least this is still in Cuyahoga County, and Cleveland will get part of the income tax. It could easily be going up in Mentor or Twinsburg or Avon, where it seems Cle.com has been tripping over itself lately to talk about how wonderful everything is nowdays.
December 30, 20159 yr ^why does CLE get some of the income tax? Do they own the land on which chagrin Highlands exists?
December 30, 20159 yr ^why does CLE get some of the income tax? Do they own the land on which chagrin Highlands exists? Yes
December 30, 20159 yr ^why does CLE get some of the income tax? Do they own the land on which chagrin Highlands exists? To piggyback off TPH2, Cleveland has owned Chagrin Highlands for over 100 years and it wasn't until the late 80s they decided they would turn the land into a huge business park for high-tech companies. They share roughly half the income tax with the respective suburbs Chagrin Highlands lies in.
January 4, 20169 yr New hotels say they'll 'absolutely' be ready for RNC January 03, 2016 UPDATED 5 DAYS AGO By STAN BULLARD Carpenters, carpet-layers and wallpaper hangers will be sweating along with civic leaders and politicos the next six months as downtown Cleveland makes ready for the Republican National Convention. Construction projects big and little will need to be wrapped up before July, ranging from the essential ones at Hilton Cleveland Convention Center and the renovation of Public Square to getting tenants into normally empty storefronts, a few of which have been vacant for years. Opening those projects will add extra excitement to the preparations. Many, such as the $272 million Cuyahoga County-owned hotel, would have been civic extravaganzas in their own right. However, the deadline also ups the ante for contractors to bring jobs in on time because it takes weeks to get new hotels operating — and downtown Cleveland will be gaining three. April 5, 20169 yr Well it's not new windows but the blank discs just recently got the Renaissance 'R.' (the discs that werent blank remain the same) 2016 2010 The answer is windows. We need them back. ^I hope they restore those missing reliefs/medallion thingies in the circular frames- the blank discs look terrible, IMHO. So true. I don't know why those 2(?) are blank like that. I have no recollection if they ever had a relief inside them. This would be on Superior to the right of the main lobby doors http://dredgersunion.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/image0064.jpg?w=490&h=327
April 6, 20169 yr Well... Not Windows but an improvement. I'm interested to see what they plan in their renovation. Especially the street level retail spaces.
April 6, 20169 yr Well that I can assist with: http://x.lnimg.com/attachments/ACE728FF-DE0F-449D-9AA6-469C8845F0BF.pdf Retail leasing plan
April 6, 20169 yr Forgive me but I am confused on the circular disc reliefs. Were the original details removed at some point and instead of restoring them are they just replaced with the letter "R" or do they conceal the original reliefs?
