Vintage lobby of the grand Renaissance Cleveland Hotel gets a touch-up

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The lobby of the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel on Public Square will get a sprucing up, but no worries. The grandeur of the space and that feeling of stepping back isn't going to change.

Hotel General Manager Steve Groppe said the hotel's new owner, Toronto-based Skyline International Development Inc., wants to "refresh the space."

Greater Cleveland adds 15 hotels in less than three years....

Sleek Holiday Inn Cleveland Clinic opens May 8, with more hotels coming this spring (photos)

By Susan Glaser, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland's hotel building boom migrates a few miles east next month, with the opening of a sleek, nine-story Holiday Inn on the campus of the Cleveland Clinic.

It will be the sixth hotel to open in the city in three years – with a couple more to come before the Republican National Convention gets under way in mid-July.

The newest: the glass-enclosed Holiday Inn Cleveland Clinic, with 276 rooms at the corner of Euclid Avenue and E. 86th Street. When the hotel opens on Sunday, May 8, it will increase by one-third the number of overnight rooms available in Cleveland's thriving University Circle neighborhood.

Still pretty boring but the Holiday Inn building actually looks better than I thought in those pictures.  The tinted glass helps!

This post most likely does not belong in this thread, but i have always wondered if anyone knew the answer.

Does anyone know at which hotels downtown visiting teams stay at.  I am referring to the NFL, MLB, NBA, AHL, AFL

& College teams.

I have seen lots of baseball teams at the Marriot.

MLB seems to go to Marriott. NBA goes to the Ritz Carlton.

Hotels in Cleveland? Is the sky the limit?

September 18, 2016 UPDATED 2 DAYS AGO

By STAN BULLARD

The onslaught of new hotels in downtown Cleveland looks to keep on coming.

Surprisingly, following the run-up of hotels that expanded the room count 55% the last four years, particularly with the addition of the publicly funded 600-room Hilton Cleveland Downtown at the convention center, worry about oversupply seems to be a passing fancy. Real estate developers have plans for four more hotels, another 750 rooms, if they all get built. Or at least the worry is relegated to some wintry day when the Huntington Cleveland Convention Center and Global Center for Health Innovation is dark or when there’s little else to fill rooms in the city. And days might mount to weeks. Several hotel owners, operators and experts — but not all — expect the softening to be temporary as the city rebuilds its convention business from scratch.

Richard Pace, president of Cleveland-based Cumberland Real Estate Development, plans to develop a 175-room boutique hotel near the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Great Lakes Science Center as part of a lakefront development with Dallas-based Trammell Crow Co. on city of Cleveland-owned land.

Are you talking about their official hotel or what they use when there is not official hotel local?  Example, Sheraton is the official hotel of MLB.  There is no Sheraton in Downtown Cleveland, so MLB teams use the Marriott Key Center.

NBA teams also use the Marriott at Key.

Marriott (all brands) is the official partner of the NBA.

^ The Ritz Carlton is also used. That's where the Warriors stayed during the Finals as well as where the Yankees and Blue Jays typically stay.

The RC is a Marriott brand

What's this all about? The old restaurant space attached to the Ritz.

Cleveland's Ritz-Carlton launches major renovation; new GM wants hotel to be best in the Midwest

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Leave it to a newcomer to set the bar this high.

New general manager Yael Ron, who arrived in Cleveland just two months ago, predicts the Ritz-Carlton, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, will become the top-rated hotel in the Midwest.

But first: a long overdue, top-to-bottom renovation of what has long been considered the most opulent of Cleveland accommodations.

Landing the Ritz-Carlton was considered a coup for Cleveland in the early 1990s. It opened as part of what was then the high-end Tower City Center retail complex, on the top nine floors of a 14-story office building adjacent to the mall.

But in recent years, the hotel has shifted its focus. Since 2011, the Ritz-Carlton has been owned by companies affiliated with Dan Gilbert, the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers and JACK Cleveland Casino, located across the mall from the hotel. It has become largely a casino hotel, setting aside a big percentage of its rooms for casino high rollers

Glad to see them focusing on their own brand rather than the casino. We are very lucky to have the only Ritz in Ohio ...

Lucky?  Most people believe the Brand is tired and needs a refresh.  Just a general question, who here would look at a R-C first, if Going Luxury?  Park Hyatt, Mandarin Oriental, St. Regis, and Four Season knock it out the park.  The Peninsula, Fairmont & Waldorf brands may be fight to keep with Marriott.

I agree.  In my Sim City world, Dan Gilbert would relegate this to the B-rate "high roller hotel" and put up a high-end property as a part of Phase II.  Four Seasons in Cleveland?  Yes please!

That depends. Based on my income? Or yours? [emoji12]

I don't disagree with what you said, I just meant since we do have the only Ritz, I'm happy for it to be refreshed and re-energized instead of just a worn-out "casino hotel".  And I hope it is a sign of positive change for Tower City. But hey- if we could snag one of those other luxury flags I'm all for it!

Where I live (Wash DC) I'd put you at the Four Seasons - cheapest room $831 a night.  But in Cleveland, the Ritz is an awesome bargain - well worth what they charge.

Actually I prefer the Park Hyatt in DC.  Followed by the R-C DC, the Inter Continental, the the St. Regis the W and lastly the Grand Hyatt.

Let hope this refresh of the R-C CLE raises the bar

Yes indeed!  And its one of the few that are dog friendly.  Plus their government rate makes it as cheap as the Holiday Inn.

Have always had a soft spot for D.C.'s Grand Hyatt.  While there may be more elegant hotels overall, I know of none with as lush and interesting a atrium lobby as the GH.  The indoor pond with the footbridge, waterside dining and piano island/pod put it over the top... Cleveland's new Hilton approaches this kind of elegance in its lobby (sorry, now water pond though) and the fantastic Bar 32 on the 32nd floor.  I'm not surprised the Hilton has jumped up to no. 2 in downtown's rental rate (or is in no. 3 behind Ritz and The 9?  I forget).

Actually I prefer the Park Hyatt in DC.

I find the West End location more or less inconvenient to everything; it's not quite here, not quite there. You might as well cross the Park and stay in Georgetown or else stay closer intown.

Back on the subject of Cleveland, however, the idea of a smallish (but expandable) budget hotel/motel at E 69th and Euclid may not be a bad one at all for Midtown business needs and the Clinic for more low-end accommodation. What to do at night at E 69th and Euclid may be a challenge now, but demand can change that pretty quickly.

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

YAWN!

Can you move this discussion to a private email or chat service?

I'm exhausted of clicking here only to learn who prefers whichever DC luxury hotel over another.

I find it exceptionally boring as contains no news about Hotel development in Cleveland, OH.

I've been reading everywhere that the Downtown Hotel Market is saturated and does not need

any more hotels. Midtown's TruHilton proposed for E. 69/Euclid is going up before the Cleveland

Planning Commission on Friday 07/21/17. Do you guys think that any of the 5 Proposed Downtown

Hotels get built. The 5 proposals out there are Nucleus, 925 Building, Jacobs West Bank Hotel,

John Hartness Brown Building & The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The market being saturated doesn't mean some of the new projects don't get built.  The newer and shinier properties will just push the older properties further toward obsolescence.  The public will usually gravitate to the latest and best.  I can think of several downtown hotels past their prime.

Jacobs West Bank Hotel probably has the best chance of getting built because it would serve a very specialized market, mainly that of weddings and their guests.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

I don't know much about hotel economics but do weddings generate enough business to sustain a hotel?

That's supposedly what's driving Jacobs to pursue building a hotel next to the Powerhouse.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

^^ By themselves probably not, but they are a very nice base to build off of.  A busy wedding venue, which Windows on the River is, will be booked most weekends April-December.  They have 3 rooms, seating 400, 300, and 160 (double those #'s for standing cocktail receptions).  So they can easily fill the hotel off of that on weekends.  Also, with an onsite hotel, I bet they can make a serious play for business meetings and small conventions.

....The 5 proposals out there are Nucleus, 925 Building, Jacobs West Bank Hotel,

What's the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame hotel?

R & R Hall of Fame is always rumored about putting in a boutique hotel between the hall & science center.

^That would be great. Way too much dead space around there. In addition to hotel life, the area needs casuals bars and restaurants like millions of cities in the world where you can hit a museum then grab a beer or burger with your friends next door or across the street. That's hard to do in CLE, especially Downtown, which is crazy.

A boutique hotel targeted towards Rock fans would do very well - it fills a niche for out of town visitors coming primarily for the R&RHOF and could cater specifically to them.  The Jacobs one makes sense, as a previous poster mentioned weddings could do a good job of filling it on the weekends, and during the week you have lots of concert goers needing a place to crash as well as any business meetings that take place at Windows on the River.  The other three could open and do well, I think it will just force some older, outdated hotels to either a) heavily renovate/rebrand to maintain competitiveness or b) consider converting the property into apartments.

Isn't the hotel plan for JHB dead? I recall the new ownership group describing parking, retail and residential.

^There is an Aloft in Beachwood so it would be the third.

Ah, just noticed that.

Just CLE. Crowne Plaza has a new(er) marketing strategy aimed at young travelers and work-life rooms, so the rebrand will be focused towards that.

When I think of Crowne Plaza I think of a mediocre hotel of slightly better quality than Days Inn, while Wyndham is a cut above; a small cut at least.

Not the Wyndham in PHS.  It's super TIRED...though I've seen old furniture piling up on Huron.  Maybe they are renovating?

"Moreover, Playhouse Square executives see the name change as a complement to a $6 million update of the property that construction workers are finishing."

That hotel was kind of a mess. Remember when there was an elevator accident that injured a UFC fighter? Hopefully those were fixed...

I have the exact same perception. If two of us on this small board share the same perspective, it shows that, if its not true, Crowne Plaza, has a lot of work to do to fix this perception. When I look for a non-full Hilton or Marriott type hotel, I look for a Hampton Inn or a Fairfield Inn. Crowne Plaza never even crosses my mind.

W

Great news!

Crowne Plaze has a much more extensive booking operation than Wyndham.  Wyndham books with the sleepy Ramada and Travel-lodge flags.

This should bring more visibility to PHSq for travelers, and perhaps result in a higher quality operation.

I've stayed in a few Crowne Plazas over the years, and while they aren't the most chic places in town, they were a solid value, and not the dump that the PHSq Wyndham had become.

When I travel to CLE (a lot) I would never stay at the Wyndham due to the good room/bad room lottery it seemed to have become.

Look at the scores and read the reviews on TripAdvisor to see how poorly the Wyndham Cleveland performs against visitors' expectations.

Click at the top of the page to sort Cleveland hotels by visitor rankings, and you'll find the Wyndham near the bottom of the list.
