Posted October 8, 201113 yr Part III – Cedar Fairmount Cedar Fairmount is right up there with Coventry/Overlook as far as getting recommendations on this site for people looking for a nice urban neighborhood. The crowd is a little older and the atmosphere is more mellow than Coventry. It is located within walking distance of Coventry, Little Italy, University Circle, as well as Cedar Lee. Cedar Fairmount is bordered on the south by the Fairmount Historic District which is the wealthiest part of Cleveland Heights. To the west is Cleveland (UC and LI). To the north is Coventry/Overlook. To the east is Cedar Lee. In all honesty, I would say it has the best location in Cleveland Heights. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. I’m sure KJP has the back-story 6. Decent diversity, I’d say 7. 8. The former Jillian’s (with the red entrance) is now a more upscale bar. I recently attended an event for my son’s school and it is pretty nice inside. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. A full service grocery store always helps 14. With parking in the rear, of course 15. I love the levels this neighborhood has 16. 17. 18. The almighty Alcazar 19. 20. 21. One of my favorite places in all of Greater Cleveland is Nightown, a legendary place to see live jazz, have a great meal, and drink it up (if you so choose) 22. 23. 24. The more you know… 25. Looking east on Cedar, on the north side of the street there is the old… 26. 27. 28. 29. … and on the south there is the new 30. 31. I would bet these rooftop decks have some nice downtown and lake views 32. 33. 34. Residential streets running between Cedar and Euclid Heights Blvd 35. 36. 37. 38. 39. 40. 41. 42. 43. Residential streets to the north of Cedar (and west of the intersection with Fairmount) have a lot of multi unit houses 44. 45. 46. 47. 48.
October 8, 201113 yr Another great set! And love the diversity shot lol. Could be on the homepage of a college website hahah.
October 8, 201113 yr "One of my favorite places in all of Greater Cleveland is Nightown, a legendary place to see live jazz, have a great meal, and drink it up (if you so choose)" Woo hoo, we agree on something! Also, Ive always had a "crush" on the building in #33
October 8, 201113 yr The building in #33 is the B.R. Deming house. Deming founded the Euclid Golf Allotment in the 1910s. Most of the homes that extend up the first part of Fairmount Boulevard were part of this development http://www.euclidgolf.com/deming_house_construction.htm http://www.euclidgolf.com/index.htm
October 8, 201113 yr I’m sure KJP has the back-story 6. Sorry, I don't know who painted it or why. But I can tell you that Mayfield-Fairmount was important junction of two streetcar lines (the Fairmount line ran down the median of the boulevard, and many of the old trolley wire support poles are still standing). The Mayfield line also hosted interurbans that continued beyond the streetcar tracks into the wilds of Mayfield Village, Gates Mills, Chesterland, Burton and Middlefield. The outer parts of the line did more to bring farm products into the city than commuters. My grandmother and mother briefly lived in the Alcazar Hotel when they first moved to Cleveland about 1950. It wasn't a very well-kept place back then, so my grandmother called it the Alcatraz! I'm bummed you didn't a picture of the building in #33 in a way that looks "down the barrel" of it to show how narrow it is! October 8, 201113 yr Loved your array of photos--what an attractive neighborhood! I don't know Cleveland at all, but if I did I'd be headed right here, wanting to call it home. Thanks!
October 9, 201113 yr The Cleveland area has some fantastic apartments. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
October 10, 201113 yr The Cleveland area has some fantastic apartments. Agreed. I'm really impressed by the multi family buildings shown in these CH threads. I like how there are various business districts within Cleveland Heights. In Cincinnati, it's rare for a neighborhood to have more than one business district, and neighborhoods are generally smaller I think.

In Cincinnati, it's rare for a neighborhood to have more than one business district, and neighborhoods are generally smaller I think. Remember this isn't a neighborhood of Cleveland this is a pretty large (area) suburb. So there are several major thoroughfares with business/shopping districts that are easy to get to on foot or car. Homes in CH range from Middle class/income to lavish historic mansions.
October 10, 201113 yr Nice thread(s) Hts!!! I really like this one as it has my favorite commercial building in CH - the Howard Hanna/Starbucks building and my old apartment building in #36. I loved living in this neighborhood.
