Part VI – South Taylor Road & Severance Circle

This subpart takes us to the south eastern segment of Cleveland Heights, which borders University Heights (with whom CH shares a school district).

Part VI(b) – Severance Circle

Severance is a circular drive at the corner of Taylor and Mayfield roads.  It is home to City Hall, some new(er) residential, offices, and the big box stores so many CH residents fought to keep out.  There used to be a mall in the center of the circle, so I suppose it was no huge loss even though I just can’t imagine how Walmart landed in CH out of all places

First…. some world crap signage

A Zaremba project that has been slowly moving along for about 10 years.  It’s a neighborhood isolated within a neighborhood isolated from the rest of the city. ???

52.

P1010199.jpg

Across Mayfield is the new Bluestone Community, which is being built where the JCC once stood.  The term Bluestone comes from the Village of Bluestone, a quarry community which first drew people to the area.  The rock that was mined became very popular in concrete mixes… iirc.

It has a condo building out on Mayfield (the sales center pictured here has been removed to make room for the townhomes being built and pictured below)

And the ‘can’t build em fast enough’ ‘Chicago Style Townhomes’.  They (Rysar) have already sold most of what is under construction now and plan a total of 16 units in groupings of 3 or 4

Bluestone is just to the west of Lutheran East, a private co-ed high school obviously affiliated with the Lutheran Church

I remember when severance was the "it" mall in Cleveland.  Long live Halle's .... in my head.  :'(

agreed, this was regarded as a fancy-schmancy mall by people in Lake County; then again you know how low class people are there!

Great Tudor buildings!  I went to Cain Park for the first time over the summer (to the very good arts fest) and never realized how wonderful it was.  Some of the areas around it have become a bit rough around the edges.

I didnt see a picture of the Rockefeller building which has a new decent restaurant in it.  We tried to go there, but it wasnt open.  Beautiful building as well, but definately in need of some attention and looking quite shabby.

Also, that Japanese restaurant on Lee had recently closed. :-(

I won't disagree!  HA!

When I lived in Highland Heights in the 1970s, we also went to Severance Mall for the high-class stuff. Otherwise we went to Richmond Mall which I could reach on my bike. I first saw Star Wars at Severance, and our family doctor was at one of the medical office buildings along Severance's ring road.

Oh, Severance...try again...

Edited to add the Lutheran East picture that was missing

Richmond Mall?  You poor thing you!

Richmond Mall?  You poor thing you!

I doubt even you would have noticed the difference between the 1970s offerings of Severance vs. Richmond malls as a 12-year-old!

My favorite stores were Spencers and the T-shirt kiosk where I could get the latest Farah Fawcett T or something with tricked-out hot rods!

I'm gay and I've been a power shopper since the 6th grade.  I would have noticed!  :P  Which is why we didn't shop there.  I dont think I've been to Richmond mall more than a handful of times in my entire life.  I'm sure it was for the movie there or the one across the street.
