Posted November 5, 201113 yr Nicollet Island is tiny, but packs a huge dose of quaintness: just a couple of residential streets, a park and an inn. Just across the river, St Anthony Main feels more in tune with the charm of Nicollet Island: it feels more like the tiny downtown of an upscale town than another corner of Northeast, but that is what's so great about this (my favorite) side of town (what can I say, I live here): big changes in ambiance just a handful of blocks away or much less in this case. Just a couple of bridges away. Yep, Cleveland built this one way out here. This one immediately caught my eye. Still some improvements to be made on the eastern end. Ending on a happier note:
November 5, 201113 yr Why does everything look so cold? Where is the city life? I do love that suspension bridge....
November 5, 201113 yr It actually wasn't that cold out, but cloudy: I had already photographed these areas and some of North Loop when it was sunny that morning only to find that they disappeared from the memory card, so I had to go back and since it was the early afternoon there was almost no one out on a weekday. When I came back at night there were more people taking a stroll, biking around and hanging out in the bars.
November 5, 201113 yr Thanks, Keith M., for the time you've spent to help us become more acquainted with some really neat neighborhoods of your new home--I guess at this point, you still consider yourself very much an explorer in a strange land. (This time next year, though, you"ll probably be giving tours of your own...) Thanks again for some fine photographs!

November 6, 201113 yr i bet the few homes on the island are highly coveted, which is sort of minnys version of roosevelt island. as i recall there is a beautiful little historic church above the st. anthony/tuggs tavern riverfront strip of buildings. msp's oldest existing home is near there as well. this is where the earliest euros settled.
