December 13, 201410 yr December 7, 2014 Kent State to Invest More Than $142M in Construction, Renovation Projects By Adrian Maties, Associate Editor Kent State University has announced it will spend more than $142 million for the construction and renovation of several buildings on its campus. The university’s board of trustees approved spending $37.6 million for the construction of the Integrated Sciences Building for the College of Arts and Sciences. The new facility will be LEED Silver certified. It will have 57,000 gross square feet of space, with an additional 13,500 square feet of unfinished basement space, and will wrap around and connect to the existing Williams Hall. According to the university, the project is financed by $5 million in state funding, $30.5 million in bond revenue funds and $2 million from Kent State’s contingency reserve for campus facilities. The new Integrated Sciences Building will be used for research and teaching chemistry, biology and physics. Kent State University to break ground for Integrated Sciences Building September 28, 2015 By CRAIN'S CLEVELAND BUSINESS Kent State University will break ground this week on its $37.5 million Integrated Sciences Building. A ceremony that’s free and open to the public will take place on Friday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. The building will be adjacent to the Student Green and Williams Hall, and will wrap around and connect to the existing Williams Hall in the Science Mall on the Kent campus. Following the groundbreaking, Kent State’s College of Arts and Sciences will host a showcase of science and technology demonstrations, along with refreshments and music, on the Student Green. I don't have a strong opinion about the building either way. As an alum, I wanted to be on the team that worked on it. But, another team was chosen, so I sort of washed my hands of it. But, IMO, the building should take a dominating presence, and doesn't necessarily need to relate to its surroundings. The College of Architecture and Environmental Design is one of Kent's best programs. Its current architecture building--Taylor Hall, a Brutalist concrete building in the middle of a bunch of mid-century brick buildings--sits on top of a hill not unlike the Parthenon at the Athenian Acropolis. So, it's not like the new building is doing anything the old building didn't. Finally, does the building really look like a cruise ship in person, or is it because the camera lens is putting a huge curve in it, making it look like the prow of a ship?
March 4, 20169 yr Froze my butt off to get more detailed pictures of the CAED buulding lol. The building was so long that I couldn't get the full building in but it's still 99% of it. The last picture is to show how long the building is. The back of it is where I am standing and the front is right in front of Lincoln st. with a small grass buffer. I began in the front and ended in the back the pictures are in order.

August 11, 20177 yr I was in Kent for the first time in four years a couple weeks ago and it looks fantastic. The KSU architecture building is great and the esplanade connecting the university to downtown is very nice. Not perfect, but so much better than what was previously there. All of the new buildings and shops built recently have done a nice job of fleshing out the downtown area and I was happy to see the cobblestone street with all the bars was still busy. There was some sort of Harry Potter festival going on downtown and I can't remember the last time I saw Kent so packed with people. It was really nice to see.

December 13, 20177 yr I know we are getting off topic, but population density ratio to available land (for car parking) is a huge driver for this. Copenhagen just hit 50/50 vehicle to bike commuters. Mainly because the city has aimed at removing parking lots and making bicycling safety and design ahead of vehicle. And they get snow just like this region.

Kent State's board of trustees on Wednesday, March 7, approved the university's $1 billion facilities master plan, which will dramatically change the university's campus. President Beverly J. Warren emphasized in a meeting with news media how Kent State's strategic road map, approved in 2015, served as an "anchor" for the university's ambitious facilities master plan. The plan would drastically change the look of campus, adding a central entryway, an "innovation hub" and more green space to encourage walking and to direct traffic off-campus. March 8, 20187 yr There's so much more they could be doing like getting their Engineering programs accredited... Think about it, these past years they've tried to recruit me to join their "Unaccredited" engineering programs. As soon as I got the letters and took a visit and heard that, it was an immediate turnoff. However I do think there is a lack of connectivity between campus and dorm, The recently built Tri-Tower Rotunda which houses Leebrick Hall and others is actually quite far from their classes. Something funny I think would be to lease Golf Carts to students just to get to class just based on the walk needed.

April 14, 20187 yr This building will be the first phase of the revamped / extended front campus. Entrances at Terrace and Midway are going to be combined into a single entrance. Parking lot in front of White hall turns into green space. This building will be East of White hall facing Main street. A parking deck is part of the first phase also, across the new single entrance drive from the new Business building.
