Very boring design...

The front is. I think the ass end is pretty cool. There's also a lot of wasted space inside.

what is it with kent state (and its sister school bgsu) getting rid of the golf courses? anyone know why at ksu? they said it was due to costs at bg, i assume the same for kent?

seems weird not to have a campus golf course to bang around on once in awhile, or have a golf team, or go sledding on with cafeteria trays in bg’s case as it had only hill for like a thousand miles of flat plains lol.

Kent State has an exception golf team. They play at a country club now. Less overhead.

The course was also too small ("too short" for all of the golfers out there). The team now plays at Windmill Lakes in Ravenna.

Kent State has many large vacant pieces of land that they are marketing, including the golf course piece. As of this past winter there was a developer who was going to convert a part the golf course along State Route 59 into a R-1 subdivision with approximately 50 homes. There are also parcels along State Route 261 and Summit Road that are for sale.

^ is the old course property a go for housing, as in did the developer actually follow thru, buy land and start to work? and are there any similar bites on other properties put up for sale?

it just seems weird for the colleges to not have their campus golf courses. i guess its more expense than i had thought to keep them up, a shame.

Ah, thought they played at Silver Lake CC.

Fire in downtown Kent next to the Mill Building.

Edited by dski44

I posted a photo from an unobstructed view in the Cleveland suburban safety thread.

Five departments are responding.

It appears to be the three-story brick building to the south of the Mill.

LOCAL

'History...up in smoke': Future of Kent mill complex remains uncertain after massive fire

Derek Kreider

Record-Courier

State and local authorities still are trying to determine the cause of the massive fire last week that engulfed Kent's iconic former Star of the West mill complex.

The area remained cordoned off Monday as fire crews were still on scene.

Orange traffic cones and yellow caution tape surrounded the front of the building, forming a wedge in the middle of North Water Street, bisecting the road and diverting traffic. A gaping hole in the brick façade could be seen from Columbus Street. The mill's broken windows looked like shattered teeth.

Judge orders sheriff’s sale for Franklin Avenue tower after unpaid construction bills

From The Portager

WENDY DIALESANDRO·JANUARY 16, 2023

A judge has ordered a sheriff’s sale for the tower under construction at the corner of Franklin and Erie streets in Kent after a dispute between the owner and a crane rental firm that claims over $90,000 in unpaid bills.

Sounds like a whole lotta drama with this seemingly never-ending project...

as you mentioned, bgsu's golf course was costing the university about $900K a year, and couldn't be justified in an era of stagnant budgets. i don't think anything is being planned for the land.

students still sled down that hill by the highway, but we don't use trays anymore in the dining halls, so they bring their own now.

The Hasawi finally getting bricked. This is the only side that is done. I like it.

4thumbnail_IMG_3887edited.JPG

Makes me think they don't expect the development next door to materialize anytime soon.  I hope it doesn't turn out to be a blank empty wall for decades like the one behind the church on public square.

Here's another recent pic from another angle.

Amish guys laying brick on the Hasawi! I finally caught ‘em in the act!

IMG_4497.jpeg

They did a nice job matching that brick to the old post office building in the foreground and, I think, some other old buildings on the Kent campus.

Funny, I’ve never seen a brick, Amish house. Or knew Amish were bricklayers.

You have Amish in every trade (including electricians) and they are damn good tradesmen.

Anyways, not sure if it's been said before but the Hasawi might be the slowest construction process in the state.

We had them at a machine shop (CNC even, not my current), there were issues with safety and suspected worker age.   Their reputation in the trades I am aware of is good, cheap, or fast:  pick two.

I totally agree. It also matches perfectly with The Venice across the way on the Erie St. Side.

And Ray’s and The Loft.

The Venice is older. Kent was a division point for the Erie Railroad (the upper tracks) where train crews changed. The Venice is where railroad crews on all passenger trains and westbound freight trains (about two dozen daily until Conrail took over in 1976) came to get a drink and some food after their runs. The Erie Yards were just north of downtown and the railroad was Kent's biggest employer until the 1960s when the university overtook it.

My primary memory of the Venice from my late 80s Kent bar hopping days is an older woman grumpily and suspiciously checking each and every ID.   Two decades later, I could definitely relate.

I think it was Ray’s where we met a group to see the (still active!) Numbers Band and I returned from the restroom to find the late Alan Canfora (of May 4) fame in my seat chatting up my girlfriend.   To the surprise of the group we got along reasonably well.  This was the 80s after all.

As for the Draft House, there's no trace.   A different world down there back then.

East side of the building has been bricked and some plastic shielding has been taken down. Hopefully some windows will be going in soon.

That's a sharp building. Love to see more of them. That's the kind of project that, if repeated in different materials and colors, can really add to a neighborhood's density.

The one that was supposed to be built next door was even cooler looking. I’m so bummed it fell through.

It's crazy how long this has been under construction.  I wonder how their financing works.  It can't be producing any income yet to cover the carrying costs.  I can only imagine they have some patient and deep pocketed equity investors.
