But this is our system. We don't have a partisan primary. Just because YOU favor Qualls doesn't mean that the party that includes her and Cranley needs to endorse her.

Not worth arguing over, but I tried to make it pretty clear that I think they should just endorse one of them, not necessarily the candidate I support.  It just seems like a waste of time and money to have 2 democrats fighting over the same office.

You're right. I didn't read carefully. It does seem like the pro-Qualls line is that she is the one true Democrat in the race. My point is they are both Democrats with different viewpoints on certain issues. I could see if one candidate was an outsider who happens to be a registered D, the party might endorse. However, since there is no partisan primary, I just couldn't see the precinct reps and the endorsement committee justifying it to themselves in this circumstance.

The problem is that two Democrats probably overlap on 95% of the issues.  This means that they have to differentiate themselves by polarizing on the few issues they do disagree on, the streetcar and the parking lease.  Sure, Cranley doesn't like either of those projects anyway, but he really has no choice but to condemn both in order to get endorsements and votes.  If only one Democratic candidate was in the race (whichever candidate), we'd be less likely to see that candidate promising to destroy the major initiatives of the outgoing Democratic mayor.

Democrats and Republicans vote the same way on 95% of routine business at all levels of government.  It's a tiny fraction of the business of government that become "issues", and those things become issues because it's easy to trick the public one way or the other.

^ ^^ Good points, Cranley is the de facto "Republican" candidate because he is opposed to one or two of the "issues" that the incumbent, and his predecessor are proposing.  Cranley's opposition to both issues is a lot more political than ideological.

  • 2 weeks later...

Channel 12 is having a televised mayoral debate tonight. Would a drinking game requiring a shot every time Cranley says streetcar be fun?

Or would alcohol poisoning be too big of a risk?

COAST has officially just endorsed John Cranley

That's right.  The tea party has officially endorsed John Cranley.  Will the Hamilton County GOP follow suit?

COAST is trying to walk back their endorsement of Cranley made this morning on Twitter.

I guess endorsing then taking it back is their strategy for trying to have it both ways -- endorsing for their supporters but not endorsing for the many people who know they're no-goodniks.

CO    claims the SWOH Green Party has endorsed John Cranley for mayor.

At a recent green candidates forum, participants claimed Cranley did very poorly.

The pension fund deficit is supposedly on of the Greenies big issues & Cranky intends to cut city contributions & borrow money for a lump sum payment into the fund.

Cincinnati is so weird.

Apparently some Democrats don't trust Cranley...

"Rumors continue that John Cranley would choose Christopher Smitherman as his vice mayor. Both he and Smitherman have said there’s no such plan.

But some Democratic precinct chairs are worried enough about the possibility of Cranley choosing a non-Democrat that they’re asking party chairman Tim Burke to get them some assurances."

If not Smitherman, it will be PG. Yay, white men.

I made a donation of $75 to Qualls - I wish I had more time to get involved, but I will try to also get a yard sign (even though I am not currently in city limits I do have property).  I noticed under volunteering they have options for mailings and ask if you own a laptop.  Does anyone know what the mailings and/or using a laptop involve and the associated time commitment?

Email volunteer coordinator [email protected] and he can hook you up with all kinds of volunteer opportunities that you can pick and choose based on availability. Frankly the most important think needed now are people to come out and canvass. It's actually a pretty good time. But you can tailor what you want to do to your availability etc. supporters are also needed to work the polls, show up for events, etc. Please get involved, we only have 20 days left!

^ here here!

Me thinks there might be several jealous drag queens in town if they saw this.

"It’s the behavior of a candidate who knows she’s in trouble, some say."

I always stop reading articles when authors think they can get away with editorializing by using the cliche "...some say" instead of just coming out and stating that's their opinion. Basic English classes in high school taught me not to write like that...

^ That is the Fox News calling card. I say and you, my ideologically-aligned friend, say -- all of a sudden we have "some" say. Perfect, we've got a source!

"I love Cincinnati. Cincinnati's my home."  Bold statement.

"...selling off our parking meters."  Parking meters are not being sold.

"Great schools for our kids."  Does Cranley think the City controls the school board?

"Giving us something to believe in."  Like the continued transformation of the urban core? Like a modern transit system?

This ad is a really bad sign.  Cranley only runs an ad like this if he is way up on Qualls, if he was behind or neck-in-neck then he would run a more direct comparison between the two of them.

Scott Sloan is having John Cranley on his show at 10:06 AM. Not sure how he's doing this without giving Roxanne equal time...

Sounds like Roxanne has been offered air-time tomorrow.

Is it true that Cranley is way ahead? It seems like he has been steadily destroying himself.

At least he isn't Rob Ford...he's not huge ;)

A commenter on the Fishwarp said something like 56-42 Cranley. No citation.

Darn....that sucks....hope it's wrong.

That was a coast troll I believe

yeah, I would think that if this info was really out there, Cranley would be crowing & Qualls would be hammering supporters, so...

Cranley was going after/borderline insulting qualls a lot tonight at the forum.  She did not take the bait.

He was also asked about COAST's support.  He refused to repudiate them.  Also denied that COAST is handling out his sample ballots

Apparently he used an analogy that included a 'beating your wife' reference.  Apparently it was in response to a audience asking "why does COAST / Tea Party support you."

It would be interesting to see a legitimate poll.  It has to be a tight race, unfortunately playing the financial ruin/fear card works in politics. It would be really disappointing if he gets elected based off of twisting the truth and having no plan, just being against everything.

Video of the exchange thanks to Jake:

Don't know if this is true or not but...

@JohnCranley must've thought he cud do this sleazy polling on QT, but Wed. I learned truth from guy who works in an office that was called

I read somewhere that Cranley endorsed the New York City "stop-and-frisk" approach to crime. That should help him in November (sarcasm).

Cranley may win this.  I've been hearing a lot of people saying that.  It's still close, but it leans towards the COAST endorsed candidate.  PLEASE. if you were going to donate do it NOW. If you have not volunteered (not blogged or tweeted or posted on FB- that does little compared to talking voters on their streets or in their homes) do it this weekend. Take 2-4 hours to make phone calls or knock on doors.

Just donated to the Qualls campaign. And I don't live in the city ;)

A big Cranley supporter threatened Yvette Simpson at a Westside meeting and she had to be escorted out.  He's also posting racist material on his Facebook wall about her

The Enquirer has completely ceased to be a relevant news organization.

I continue to miss the Cincinnati Post.
