Oh, this is a juicy one.

The city has been funneling money to the questionable organization "Center for Closing the Health Gap" for years. The organization has been criticized many times over the years including this article by Kevin Osborne, who later went on to become Cranley's communications guy. The organization is run by former Mayor Dwight Tillery, who has "has no medical background or expertise" according to Osborne.

But it turns out Tillery supported Cranley in 2013 and was co-chair of his campaign... and so Cranley continued to funnel money to the organization. Cranley even included the organization's annual Health Expo in the list of heritage events that had permission to shut down the streetcar.

Then Tillery announced that he would not be supporting Cranley's re-election in 2017. And suddenly questions are being asked about whether the organization should receive funding from the city. In fact, Cranley called for an investigation into the group. Channel 9 investigated and found that they are spending money on a lot of very questionable things.

It's so clear from this story how Cranley works. If you support him, he'll funnel money at your organization. If you turn on him, he will use his political power and local media connections to destroy you.

From today's Enquirer:

The budget woes come in a year when six of the nine council members are running for re-election and Mayor John Cranley is facing a re-election challenge from Councilwoman Yvette Simpson and Rob Richardson Jr.

In 2013 Cranley ran on a platform that included getting the city's budget under control. When Cranley took office the budget was $352.3 million. This year it is $387.9 million.

If not for Kasich's attack on the local government fund, Cranley would have $28 million more a year to spend on buying votes.  He certainly wouldn't have advocated a cut to the local earnings tax.

Simpson campaign team member pulls 'stale pale male' Facebook post about Cranley

A national-level political strategist associated with Yvette Simpson's mayoral campaign made a racially charged comment about Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley on social media last week.

Washington D.C.-based consultant Jessica Byrd, an African-American who focuses on helping minority candidates get elected, called Cranley a "stale pale male" in a Facebook post last Friday.

Simpson, vying to become the city's first black female mayor, refused to disavow Byrd's comment about the white mayor when The Enquirer asked the city councilwoman about the post on Tuesday.

The house is owned by the family trust and so Mayor John Cranley does not own it outright, but the family appears to have owned it since the 1970s.  So little west side Johnny grew up vacationing in one of the premier vacation destinations in America, not Myrtle Beach and Gatlinburg like the rest of us.

That'll toughen you up...

We spent our vacations chasing preachers when I was a kid. This led us to such exotic locales as Ashtabula, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Huntington West Virginia, PTL in South Carolina and Bradenton, Florida. We also checked out the Quaker Oats complex in Akron while taking a short break from Jesus.

Back in 2000, MTV recorded a special on...John Cranley.  But then the Pew Charitable Trust -- a Koch-like organization -- convinced MTV to air it after election day!

MTV delays Cranley special

By John Kiesewetter

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Cincinnati Democrat John Cranley won't get the national exposure he wanted from MTV before Election Day. He'll have to wait two weeks.

Crews have been in and out of Cincinnati for a year shooting Mr. Cranley, 26, who is challenging Republican Steve Chabot for the 1st Congressional District seat.

MTV has produced a special called True Life: I'm A Candidate featuring Mr. Cranley and another untested young congressional candidate, Dylan Glenn, 31, from southwest Georgia.

Mr. Cranley had hoped MTV would air the special on Sunday, two days before Election Day. But folks at the Pew Charitable Trust, which helped finance the special, talked MTV out of airing the special so close to the election.

So True Life: I'm A Candidate will air at 10 p.m. Nov. 16, nine days after western Hamilton County voters determine his fate.

Mr. Cranley may be seen briefly in MTV's VoteFest 2000 special today (8-9:30 p.m.).

An ironic choice of adds there google. Funny, even though he probably bought every youtube ad watched by key demographic groups of a certain age/medium income, blah, blah. Too bad im living in Delhi at the moment.

His campaign had a bunch of volunteers standing around with Cranley signs at the first FCC home game. It was fun trolling them by going up to them, with a huge smile, throwing hands in the air in praise, and then yelling "Yvette Simpson!! Down with Cranley!". Their faces would go from excitement, thinking that someone is about to be happy about Cranley, to sad confusion. Also the Die Innenstadt member on the megaphone was bad mouthing Cranley.

There were no Cranley supporters at the next home games

I wonder who got the key to L.A. when Dokken split up in 1990. If you ever find Jeff Pilson in your house out there you'll know who has it.

What an idiot.

How does your office declare a day in honor of someone, and no one in your office bothers to Google the person's name to see if they... you know, killed someone? His communications director even signed off on it.

And that's his campaign for mayor dying.

What an idiot.

Talk about getting a little egg on your face...a whole dairy case of 'em toppled over on him.

This just blatantly shows how much of a sycophant he is. He's never really cared about things like sanctuary cities or BLM, he just used them to pander for votes, and hopefully this slip-up gets enough people to see that.

“To an Ohio resident - wherever he lives - some other part of his state seems unreal.”

I'm not jumping the gun on this being the end of things. A certain presidential election has taught me not to assume that people are turned off by these kinds of gaffes or blatant lies. Hell, Cranley's falsehoods last time didn't even really phase anyone.

How long until we see an Enquirer editorial stating these talking points:

- All of this was horribly unfortunate, but it was a mistake.

- That the accountable people were fired.

- That Cranley took responsibility although he didn't have to.

- That there's important work for the mayor to get back to and we shouldn't dwell on this long enough.

- Queue up several stories about balancing the budget and "is anyone riding the streetcar?

I have a feeling this isn't going to be remembered as well come election time and if Yyvette uses it as a slight against him in debates and rhetoric that could come off wrong if she's not careful.

Then again, the community (even outside of Cincinnati) really rallied around the Sonny Kim shooting and was really affected by it. Maybe they won't give Cranley a pass, but does that translate to staying home or voting for Yyvette?

To me, the more concerning thing is the crying in front of the cameras. I get that this was a horrible gaffe and a really bad mistake. I get that he's positioned himself as a champion of law enforcement, but.... crying? If I make mistakes at my job and go into my bosses office with tears in my eyes, I'm probably not gonna fetch much sympathy.

If this was a bit of trolling by the opposition, it was pretty brilliant.  It actually slipped through!

Shortly after this incident happened, Cranley's office tried to blame it on Wendell Young, by claiming that the request from Tre's father for a day in his son's honor originally "came in through Young's office". Jason Williams at the Enquirer started pushing that narrative almost immediately. Young fired back with a statement making it clear that he had noting to do with this declaration. Williams then deleted all of his tweets that blamed Young. (And this is a few days after Enquirer published an editorial insisting that Williams isn't biased in favor of Cranley... uh huh, sure.)

The feedback on social media was interesting to see. A lot of conservatives were saying that between this incident and the Sanctuary City designation, Cranley is toast. But I agree with Gordon Bombay[/member], I'm not resting easy. This might be Cranley's Billy Bush tape...as deplorable as it is, it's not going to stop his core supporters from voting for him.

New info: The "Tre Day" proclamation request came through Councilman Wendell Young's office and was sent onto the mayor's office.

Immediately after Williams posted that, one of Cranley's biggest supporters claimed that this was a trap set by Young to take Cranley down.

John Cranley spoke a moment ago at Fountain Square in an event remembering fallen officers to once again apologize.  He followed up the rest of his speech to speak all about him and how he's some grand civil servant.  It was a bit sickening, but at least the other speakers were focused on the reason they were there and not themselves.

Because Cranley rains money down on these guys.  That's how he built the support for the parks levy -- promise to have the parks dept pay huge $$'s for odd pieces of unused land owned by black churches.

2 points I got out of the conversation of why would an African American support Cranley:

1) Minority inclusion of govt contracts increased from 2% to 45%.

2) More cops.  The guy I chatted with loves hiring more police to solve crime (probably specific to his own viewpoint).  (I cited evidence that its not better, he disagreed and bought into the lie that Cranley was responsible for the Collaborative agreement).

I'm happy I did this, I really wanted to get a voice that IMO isn't really represented on this forum.

So yeah raining money on them....

People do need to understand that this community is what will swing the election so there should be a focus on it.

Please do not make the mistake that ONE African American supporter of Cranley represents a general population of African-Americans in a city.  It is one perspective that is needed but certainly not a sign.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

There's a large section of the Cincinnati population that basically thinks the city should not do anything but hire police and firefighters. Cranley is literally buying the FOP's support (with taxpayer money) by hiring more cops and firefighters and giving them massive raises over the next three years.

Most of the people on this forum aren't on that team because we understand that hiring more cops and firefighters alone doesn't make the city safer. We understand that vacant buildings and empty lots attract criminal activity, and developing vacant buildings and empty lots into new businesses, retail space, and residences results in more "eyes on the street" which makes the city safer. We understand that getting police officers out of their cars and into the community, interacting with citizens, makes us safer. We understand that when you raise people out of poverty, they are less likely to commit crimes.

But America loves to compartmentalize everything. If there's crime, the only solution is to hire more cops! You can't possibly look at the dozens of other government policies that could be changed that would reduce the amount of crime...

Agreed and sorry if I came across as implying that.

Yeah and that problem isn't unique to Cincinnati either.  I hope long term things change to more effective policing over more policing.  One can hope.

This is extremely important. There are African American in this city that range from far left to far right. You can't and shouldn't lump people together based on their physical characteristics (which I don't believe Neil was trying to do, at all, BTW).

Other countries have significantly reduced or almost eliminated the problems that plague the United States.  Instead of copying those solutions, here they are smeared, since too many people are making money off of what amounts to war profiteering.

Today 700WLW was defending Cranley and still trying to blame Kevin Flynn.  Cranley's real mess-up was the crocodile tears -- the still of him wiping away those fake tears helped turn it into a viral story.  I saw Yahoo News going crazy with it, thanks to that ridiculous image.

Cranley is now orchestrating a "refresh" of the collaborative agreement.  Basically just an election year stunt.

Committee hits Cranley campaign with elections complaint

The Charter Committee has filed a complaint against Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley’s campaign, saying it ran afoul of state law by not listing the owners of limited liability companies that made donations.

Charter is a political and civic organization that spearheaded the campaign for Cincinnati’s form of government in the 1920s and has endorsed Cranley’s opponent, Councilwoman Yvette Simpson, for mayor.

My wife and I were having a good time watching the July 4 fireworks at the Eden park over look, like we've done the last 3 years. Always a large and very chill crowd, in my experience - predominantly African American. A great place and event to enjoy being an American with other Americans, and appreciating the Ohio river valley and all the crazy people in Northern Kentucky who love fireworks ;-).

And then about 10 minutes till 10:00, right in the middle of it, here come two squad cars with megaphones, informing everyone that the park would be closing at 10:00 and the gates would be closed and locked.

I asked one of the officers why this was being done this year, where it hadn't been the practice in years past (and why ruin a fun family event?).

She told me that: 1) the parks hours are posted prominently in 5 different places; 2) she couldn't speak to what had or had not been the practice in years past; and 3) "the City Manager lives near hear, and instructed the department to strictly enforce the hours this year, no exceptions."

I'm probably over-sensitive to this crap because of His Majesty in the white house, but it was a sad ending to independence day, for many.
