Posted November 29, 201113 yr Been trolling around these forums for quite sometime, but never had a chance to post.... until now! I have been thinking about moving to the Tremont area, to a single family home. I have searched, but it is hard to find current (2011) thoughts and reviews of Tremont. I am single male, looking for a fun, urban atmosphere in the Cleveland area. How is the area trending? I know all about petty thefts, is it getting better, worse, same (house has garage). Just wanted to get opinions on the area, if it is still up and coming, etc... Hard to say if lack of internet findings in 2011 is good or bad! Thanks Much
November 29, 201113 yr Welcome to the forum jb. I admittedly don't live there, but as a frequent visitor, my perception is that it's getting better each year. I love the restaurant/bar scene. The artwalk can be amazing. In the daytime it can seem like a very quiet and boring place. For better or worse, it is a lot more lively at night. I have friends that have had both of their cars stolen (and eventually recovered) last year! But they still really enjoyed living in Tremont. It's a fun neighborhood.
November 29, 201113 yr I live in Cleveland and have been going to Tremont for years. I suppose the criminal aspect is getting better but just barely. This summer my wife & I were confronted & harrassed by a group of young punks while walking to our car after dinner. That quickly could've gotten ugly. That stuff doesn't happen in Detroit Shoreway or Kamm's. I've said it for years, Tremont really needs a major streetscape project to fix the sidewalks, hide all the mess of overhead wires, and add more lighting. Walking from Southside over to Edisons for example can take one through a number of poorly lit sketchy spots. Despite all this, Tremont is still our favorite dinner destination. Not many places to stick around afterward for a night of drinking though like there is in Ohio City.
November 30, 201113 yr Looks like some improvements are coming..... http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,1699.msg589707.html#msg589707 "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
November 30, 201113 yr thanks for the input everyone. Glad to hear it is getting better, even if it is little by little. I have heard good things about DS as well, and I do like going out there on occassion. I was under the impression the shoreway is a bit 'rougher' than Tremont, perhaps that isn't true?

I would say that DS is rougher than Tremont. It all depends on what streets you are looking at. If you don't mind me asking, where do you currently live? That gives us better perspective on your search. Have you given Ohio City any thought? The momentum there is fantastic.
November 30, 201113 yr I love living in Tremont. I definitely think the area is still trending up, and I've lived in various parts of the neighborhood for over three years. It's very safe (safer than Ohio City or Detroit-Shoreway,) and I love how many little businesses have started up over the past few years and are becoming established. With that said, however, I do most of my hanging out in those two other neighborhoods (and Downtown.) The Tremont crowd tends to be a little older than my demographic (mid-twenties,) so while I'm not looking for some pukefest W. 6th frat party (no disrespeck!,) I find myself using my apartment as a nice home base from where I can easily bike, walk, or take transit to places like ABC or Happy Dog that are more popular with people my age.

By the stats, crime doesn't happen more or less in Detroit Shoreway than it does in Tremont. http://www.clevelandgis.org/pub/index.html?config=crime.xml
December 1, 201113 yr The poster above who states that there are limited places in Tremont for a night of drinking is ill informed. I only visit Cleveland but Tremont has plenty of great drinking establishments and is every bit as safe as Ohio City or Detroit Shoreway. Some joints in Tremont you will like are the Tap House, Hotz's Cafe, lava lounge, 806 Club, Flying Monkey, Treehouse and especially the Prosperity Social Club which is unlike most bars anywhere and great for drinking the night away. Just like any inner city neighborhood you just need to keep your wits about you.
December 1, 201113 yr I also live in Tremont; yes the area is better than it was even a few years ago but there's always room for improvement. Being in walking distance to great bars and restaurants is a perk, but being able to walk to them during happy hour and during the week (when they're less jam packed) is even better. There's decent transit access, though Ohio City and Detroit-Shoreway have it a little better; highway access can't be beat. I don't disagree with Confiteordero in that the Tremont bar scene seems a little more geared toward the mid-30s+ crowds. Safety-wise, as sfbob stated - keep your sober wits about you if you're alone and out late and stay on the main well-traveled streets. Also, I personally wouldn't live *anywhere* (whether it's Mayberry or Midtown Manhattan) without an alarm system. It doesn't guarantee anything but it can be an effective deterrent. If you're looking at specific areas within Tremont, feel free to send me a private message and I can get more detailed information for you. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
December 1, 201113 yr Mayday...agree. Highway access from Tremont cant be beat. You have all of them. 490, 176, 71, 90 all right there and 77 only seems far because all of the others are so close. The highway access is superior and the transit access is inferior to about the same degree which leads me to..... Disagree on OC and DS having it a "little better" for transit access. Tremont has 1 bus (81), that makes a meandering trip (takes 20 minutes to go 3 miles) down town every 30 mins during the day and about 50 minutes outside of the normal work day and is the only bus through the neighborhood. D/S has the 45 which is once an hour and the 26 that runs every 20 minutes (30 mins off peak). The Red line is also 1/2 a mile from the center of Detroit Shoreway ... 65th and Detroit. The closest train stop to Tremont is in the heart of OC. 1 mile from the edge of Tremont and not a walk that I would call scenic or inducing of feelings of safety...Under the highway over the abbey rd bridge..that walk is brutal in every sense of the word. I have done it. I have walked the 81 (old one that went across the Lorain carnagie bridge then the abbey bridge ) route and made it home to tremont (3 miles) without ever being able to get on the bus. I would only do this coming/going from a tribe Day game, I would never ever ever walk this route at night. Lorain and 25th has 7 buses go past it. Detroit and 25th has 8. D/S is better. OC is so much better it is night and day. In the next 10 minutes from the time I type this google maps shows a train and 2 buses. From the northwest corner of lincoln park I am told to walk a mile and then get on the next bus/train in OC or I can wait for 20 minutes for the 81. Tremont USED to have it almost as good as D/S when you could get the 35 (I think) at the corner of lincoln park and the circulators were running. But not now, you can wait an hour to get a bus to or from a ball game. about the same amount of time it would take to walk the 3 miles. It got so bad that I would often have to call my "cab guy" to make sure I could make it downtown in time to see the tribe play. One of the things I took into consideration and a factor in moving from Tremont over to D/S was how bad the RTA had become in getting me anywhere from Tremont. Higway access 1) Tremont 3) Ohio city 9) Detroit shoreway Transit 1) Ohio city---this could quite possibly be the second most serviced transit location next to Downtown. 5) Detroit shoreway 12) Tremont---this might tie with St Johns Shoreway hospital in Westlake for the frequency of service.
December 2, 201113 yr Good to see so many posts! I am not worried too much about public transit, however it is good to know for the future. I will be installing a security system, even though I don't see how it will protect the house from a quick snatch and grab through a window. I currently live in parma (lame, I know) and have grown up in the Cleveland area. I spent 5 years in Toledo, so I am not unaware of urban areas and the wits you should have about you when walking etc. (Toledo has its fair share of problems to say the least!). It is good to hear the current thoughts, all of which seem to be improving still!
December 6, 201113 yr This is my first time posting on UO, but for worth I am in my mid twenties and purchased a home in Tremont almost a year ago. I had looked all over the city for housing options and after visiting Tremont I really loved how closely knit the neighborhood is. Unlike OC and DS the Historic Tremont District has established boundaries (highways, w14, & Cuyahoga)which help facilitate the the "neighborhood feel". As far as safety is concerned when looking at numbers Tremont encompasses a much larger area that most people think (which does have some rougher parts). Within the Historic Tremont area I feel safe, but at the same time I take normal precautions that everybody should when living in a more urban area. I enjoy and try to support all the great neighborhoods in Cleveland and feel confident you would be happy in any of them. Before jumping into any housing situation take a few days/nights to drive/walk around the different areas and you will start to get a pretty good feel for what fits you.
December 6, 201113 yr JB, im a huge tremont guy...but i would say Ohio City and Detroit Shoreway have higher upside with the lake and with the sizzling business growth in Ohio City. Tremont has some great home, but also consider the other areas.
