What a surprise, ink!  A handsome town completely under the radar.  (I'm reaching for my Rand McNally road atlas right now!)

It's more vibrant than most.

Ive always wondered what this place looked like

Fond memories.  When my dad was in the service, our family lived in Camp Lejuene, NC.  Our neighbors on the base moved to Beckley when my family moved to Cleveland, but we stayed in close contact.  I grew up calling them Aunt and Uncle, and thought of their kids as cousins.  They had a house in Beckley and a horse farm just outside the city.  I spent good chunks of the summers getting dirty at their farm (which I hear now has been demolished for a McMansion McSpansion :().  Pretty close to the WVa state park (Pipestem?) as well.  We used to go there often for camping.  And there is some great white water rafting in that general area as well along the New River and the Guinea.  When I moved back to NC for school, I would make it a point to make this town a pit stop on my way to get something to eat and rest at either the Tamarak or the Harper Rd exit...... which makes sense because it is pretty much the only form of civilization along the roughly 3 hour drive between Charleston and the NC border.

Not just Tamarack! Or if your old enough, the Glass House.

My wifes family lived in Beckley for a couple years.  When it became well known that they were Jewish, they were not treted very well by the local residents.  She said that there weren't hate crimes or anything like that, but it was very hard making friends once that little fact was known.  She said it seemed to be a very backwards place.  I really know nothing about the town other then cruising through it on 77.
