Posted February 1, 201213 yr No -- not the 1960s! But the 60s. As in near-record warmth for Jan. 31! So here's some views on my way to, from and at Shaker Square today. Please note the lighter coats or the absence of coats.... First we start out on a different square, Public Square, after hopping off the #55 bus from Lakewood. Some of you may remember last week that I encountered a man puking just outside the entrance to Tower City Center. This week, someone was pooping outside Tower City. Wait, that's from mounted police horses? Well tell 'em to clean it up! :police: On the train to Shaker Square, passing Central Rail at East 55th, with standees but some empty seats. I would guess that the train was about 90 percent full. But it's warm and sunny outside, and the heat is off inside the train.... That's my train from Tower City. Trains pass this spot every three minutes during rush hours. Cop a squat in Michael's diner and watch the parade. I did! I hope this pic is upright in the version you're seeing. It's been acting up for me. Note the girl on the cell below the Shaker Square sign -- no coat and wearing short sleeves! And pedestrians were everywhere! Or check out this guy in the tie -- no coat. Not even on his arm like the woman behind him. I'm half-surprised the restaurants on the square didn't have their tables out for al fresco dining! :-P A westbound train for downtown, which is what I was to board after my dinner with a friend and then a meeting regarding the Blue Line Corridor extension to the "belt" highways like I-480 and I-271. Back to "that other square" in Cleveland. No, not Playhouse!! Higbee's was all lit up and workers were busily plugging away at the new casino at 8 p.m. People were out strolling, riding their bikes and waiting for buses with temps cooling off into the 50s with strong winds. But it's better than the alternative.... Like this frigid morning I woke up to in Lakewood a couple of weeks ago (Jan. 14?), but of course it didn't last.... Then again, winter can sometimes be pretty, as was this sunrise I shot on Jan. 23.... I like the warm weather, but I don't like the thought that we are probably responsible for it. So keep walking and riding transit! Especially in great, walkable settings like Shaker Square. Just leave your coat at home!!! February 1, 201213 yr Nice shots. You should have demanded that the cop whose horse defecated be cited for littering by the other cop. I've seen some mounted patrols using diapers for their horses, just bags that are somehow attached so that they catch that material. They do sort of detract from the image, though. Our weather here has been spotty. I don't know if we broke sixty yesterday, but we came close with periods of warm sun but mostly light overcast. Last Sunday afternoon we had broken into the low 40's with occasional sun, and I drove about thirty miles north to get a look at a truck I saw advertised in the Sunday paper. By the time I got about ten miles north of the city, I was in near-whiteout conditions, with at least a couple of inches of accumulated snow and high winds picking it up and blowing it across the pavement, where traffic was packing it into slick spots.
February 1, 201213 yr It has been a nice winter overall. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
February 1, 201213 yr 'Bout time you posted! I was starting to think you went on one of your Witness Protection Plan trips again! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

February 2, 201213 yr Big disappointment. I wanted the 1960s. Except it was colder back then. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
February 3, 201213 yr So what is there about 'global warming" (Cleveland-style) not to like? Thanks, KJP, for some neat shots of the RTA and Shaker Square; I really would enjoy further photo-shoots of the trains, either in their approaches or exits from Tower City. (Down here we're able to appreciate a great deal about Cleveland by "reading" the numerous updates, but actually "seeing them" is so much better.)

Here's some photos of Tower City from the Cuyahoga Valley viaduct last summer when RTA was doing some major track rehab work on the bridge.... I'll see what else I have, but those ought to keep ya busy for a while! EDIT: here are some more. FYI, these were shot at midday on a weekday -- NOT during rush hour -- at Tower City and the Ohio City stations... February 3, 201213 yr ^yeah, and with all that midday rail traffic (and similar foot traffic at Shaker Sq) the logic is?? ... we don't need rail extensions, need more buses and sprawl... of course. (end venting).
February 10, 201213 yr Shaker Square ... what an urban/urbane neighborhood should look like! Hell yeahzzzzzzzzzzzz
