Posted February 3, 201213 yr I'm way behind in my posting, so more 2011 travels are coming soon to a screen near you. First up: Nashville, where I went to a conference in July and stayed at the Union Station Wyndham Grand, listened to country music, ate at BBQ joints and diners and enjoyed the architecture. I've got a thing for glass-roofed arcades, and the one in downtown Nashville has a European touch in that it is open to the elements at each end. Similar view, but from the upper level Skylight, with buildings The Peanut Shoppe -- another reason I went to the Arcade There used to be Planter's shops like this in major downtowns all over the country. Now only a handful remain. I'm a regular at the one in Columbus and have gotten to know the owner. She told me to say hi to her friend and counterpart in Nashville. Honky Tonk Row at night ... or Music City Row, as Kris Kristofferson called it in "To Beat the Devil" More of same The Ryman Auditorium -- the original Grand Ol' Opry -- at dusk Columbus-based Jeni's Ice Cream opened its first out-of-state shop in Nashville last summer Parthenon, with ancient Athenian "trolley" bus Pediment detail The 1897 Parthenon replica in "The Athens of the South" is a focal point of Centennial Park (built in the centennial of Tennessee statehood) The Hermitage -- not the Andrew Jackson estate, but the friendly, down-home diner in a desolate area near downtown Washed-out and out of focus, but a view of the hotel from the car Looking down Broadway at the old post office (now art museum) and the hotel at Union Station, a wonderful Richardsonian Romanesque edifice. More Broadway -- station tower in the distance Behind the bar at The Second Fiddle Trendy 2nd Avenue downtown Neat building near the Arcade Heart of downtown Modest capitol, wonderful setting Another capitol view Downtown from the capitol One of the Row's distinctive signs Ernest Tubb Record Shop -- I had the check it out, but it's a tourist shop; and much-more unassuming record shop is just down the street I like the contrasts here Tour bus Jack's Bar-B-Que on Honky Tonk Row Another Arcade view Lobby of Union Station Wyndham Grand Our room -- 18-foot-high ceiling
