I've known Graham for 15 or 16 years. He's a great person and beats those two on character alone.

I'm sure you're right on Mr Veysey being a great guy, but if there's one thing that matters in politics, name recognition is everything.  I predict the sliver shaped district is split pretty much down the middle with Kaptur winning the west and Kucinich taking the East.  Too close to call at this point.  I hope Kaptur wins though.  Kucinich has been worthless for NE Ohio - fighting to end the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan and get national recognition on topics like Healthcare Reform rather than fighting for local jobs & development.  Marcy Kaptur single handedly won the I-280 bridge project for the Toledo area which was huge.

If I lived in that district my parochialism would likely motivate me to vote for Kucinich in the primary almost no matter what Kaptur said or did.  I'm sure Kaptur is a perfectly fine person who's good enough at her job, but she doesn't know Cleveland like Dennis! (or even someone else--anyone else--from here) does.  The Cleveland MSA should have three congresspeople in D.C. looking out for our specific interests.  We need that now as much as any time in our history.

LaTourette and Kucinich are working together to get the Inner Belt bridge funded.  What's Kaptur's plan if that's just" smoke and mirrors" as she say?

Judge Angela Stokes was elected to the bench despite negative peer reviews and a scathing review in the PD's election guide....  Ditto for Dan Brady when he ran for the County Council position on the near west side of Cleveland...

The district barely includes Cleveland at this point and I would argue Dennis doesn't really know Cleveland all that well anymore.  I think he just got involved with LaTourette on the bridge issue at the 11th hour - why hasn't he been fighting for more infrastructure projects in the Cleveland area for the last decade?  What has his position been previously on finding funding for major projects like Flats East Bank, Shoreway renovation, keeping Hopkins a major hub airport....  It really seems that he makes more appearances to fight for causes outside his current district than anything within.  See his recent visit to fire up some locked out workers at a tire plant in Findlay Ohio....

Kucinich has some controversial, even wacky, views but make not mistake about it..... he is a champion for Cleveland.  If you want to know his position/efforts on the Hopkins hub, just google it.  He also did not bandwagon jump on the bridge.  He was at the forefront as soon as Kasich and Co. announced the possible delay.  I heard him on the radio that same day (or a day after at most).  I can't remember the last big local issue which needed some lobbying in DC that Kucinich did not jump right on.

Unfortunately for us, with the way the district was drawn, I highly doubt he will get the nod.

I should have clarified; "good" meaning good for residents.

It looks to me like a decent chunk of Cleveland/suburbs is still in Kucinich's district.

I have talked to so many people who say they have been helped by Kucinich's office here. I think he and his staff do a good job of helping individuals.

They are both Democrats but I really like the way Kucinich stands up to the big banks. I attended a hearing on the "gassification" plant proposed in Cleveland and Kucinich was there and  spoke out against it due to the enviromental impact. I really like his energy.

I think that it will depend on turnout. If people in Cuyahoga county get out and vote, I think he can win.

Marcy Kaptur's ads have been on the air here in Cleveland all weekend - looks like the Plain Dealer already endorsed her over Kucinich

The War in Iraq was the biggest issue of your lifetime.  If you want to know where your infrastructure budget is, look at the trillions of dollars they wasted in Iraq.

Yeah they did officially endorse her a week or two back.

FWIW, Graham Veysey is the media artist who converted the vacant Ohio City firehouse into a live-work building (with a planned coffee shop on the ground floor) and established Cowork Cleveland (http://coworkcleveland.com/).

Several new ads by both Kucinich & Kaptur, any predictions on where this race ends up?

It's difficult to say, not being in this district, but I think Kucinich exploring taking his talents to Seattle (:)) is not going to engender himself to the Cleveland end of the district, particularly with vocal critics of his presidential runs drawing attention away from the district already. Not sure what proportion of voters this is, with many Clevelanders really liking his passion and ideology and Paul Wellstone-esque populism, but I get the sense that Kaptur might have more universal support in the western portion of the district.

It will also be interesting to see if Veysey plays any kind of inadvertent Nader role. Let's say Veysey pulls 5% across the district, with 4% coming from Cleveland and its environs and a much smaller 1% from Toledo and the rural counties. In a tight race between Kucinich and Kaptur, that could be enough to shift the race. In a recent 90.3 interview, Kucinich seemed to elude to this and that it might be intentional ... Something to the effect that Veysey had previously worked for a political consulting firm that's playing a very large role in Kaptur's current run. Whether this plays out on Election Day, interesting to consider what role a third candidate can play in a primary between two generally well-liked heavyweights.

Kaptur is the senior member of the appropriations committee. She has clout Dennis cannot match, even if she's not from Cleveland. Dennis has also gone far afield in his ambitions; I'm voting for Kaptur.

I'm done with Dennis.  No matter how much he spins his anti-war efforts are his way of fighting for Cleveland, at some point he has to pay attention to the district.  Even so-called Democrat hallmarks, like bringing home the stimulus bacon, he lagged far behind even Steven Latourette.  Kaptur almost doubled his take on Stimulus funding (according to Recovery.gov).  Meanwhile Dennis was off in Seattle considering leaving us all.

No thanks...it's time for a change.

Kaptur is the senior member of the appropriations committee.

Great point, that's huge.  I don't know why her ads aren't playing that up more...

Good riddance.  Will be glad to have a senior member of the appropriations committee representing part of Greater Cleveland.  I'm sure Dennis is filling out his paperwork on K street this morning.

Cleburger, how could you say Dennis turned his back on Cleveland?  He fought to keep St. Michael's hospital open for constituents when St. Lukes and others were closing.  He fought to get the union workers a fair deal with the Tops supermarkets corp. was bought out by Giant Eagle.  He pushed for Cleveland to get it's fair share of Obama's stimulus funding and pushed through TIGER and other FTA grants for RTA and other transportation projects (including the recent critical grant to relocate the E.120 Rapid station).  The latest was his lending his weight to get funding to stop the ridiculous 10+ year delay in getting the 2nd Innerbelt bridge built.  It's a myth/stereotype that, just because Dennis fought for and maintained a national/international agenda of civil/human rights that he somehow forgot about Cleveland.  The man is a bundle of energy and lives and breathes Cleveland; he has all his life.  Yes, I've questioned some of his tactics and at times thought he was heavy handed, but you could NEVER deny the man's passion.

So now we in Cleveland expect to get the same attention by a representative who is based in, and has, for 30 years, represented constituients 100 miles away.  Thanks Voinovich... thanks Plain Dealer for endorsing her just purely out of spite for Dennis.  With this endorsement, you have shown how much you truly care about the citizens of Cleveland ... Not! (you heard about cutting off your nose to spite your face?)....

Kaptur has power, position, and respect in Congress.  I don't think Dennis has any of that despite his lengthy career in politics.  I'm glad to have Marcy representing me as a Cleveland west sider.  I think she'll make sure we get ours and then some.

^You're entitled to your opinion.

Marcy is known for bringing home the bacon.  Now if that can translate for more fed $$$ for Cleveland then we cant complain.  I just hope she is able to connect with NE-Ohio though.

Certainly part of me will miss Dennis though.  He was a character and as friends would say "a Cleveland original", and often in the news whether for good or bad.

Hopefully he can still do some good.

Dennis is the left-wing's version of Ron Paul.

Whatever Kaptur's credentials, she'll have a hard time ever matching Dennis' passion and hard work for this town.

With any luck, however, she'll only be representing Clevelanders for one term.  Hopefully the redistricting lawsuits and ballot initiative can get this mess straightened out by 2014 so we can get true representation for westsiders.

I've met Kucinich once while on a school trip to the D.C in middle school, he seemed nice but let's face it, where has he gotten us over the years. Atleast Kaptur brings something new to the table and not the "same ol same ol" that the County voters seem to love. We are no better or worse with him out, only time will tell if we as voters made the correct decision. Kucinich time out has long over been due, it seems like he only steps up to the plate when election time is around the corner IMO.

We are no better or worse with him out, only time will tell if we as voters made the correct decision.

I don't follow this sentence.  I would agree that only time will tell if we are better or worse with him out.  We don't know if Kaptur will take up our (Cleveland's) causes the way Dennis did.

About a decade ago, I was covering Kucinich's re-election campaign for Sun. At his re-election celebration at the Highland Party Center (since demolished for the West 117th Giant Eagle), he sang "Who stole the Kishka?"

Answer -- the GOP and Marcy Kaptur stole his Kishka!

Let's be fair before we burden Ms Kaptur with ALL of Cleveland's problems - she now barely represents a sliver of western Cleveland & Cuyahoga County in the 9th District.  Farcia Mudge now represents most of the City including Downtown & all of the East Side.  And Seven Hils/Broadview Heights.  ???

Good thing Steve LaTourette recognizes the importance of the center city and helps out accordingly.  Even during the days of Stephanie Tubbs Drone and Dennis the Menace, the city PTB went to him if they needed something.  Had there been a GOP majority when TARP happened, I daresay National City Bank still exists.

As for Kucinich, I was surprised. Dennis probably has the worst administrative record of any unindicted politician in US history, but he's been counted out many times over the last thirty years and defied it every time. He may be nuttier than chinese chicken salad, but he's great at old school politics and especially at constituent service.

Ironically, he was in a great place as a member of the minority party. He could grandstand, posture, and play to the cameras while not being held responsible for anything.  Especially when the city had SL to go to.

I wouldn't want to be one of his state legislators right about now.

Where? In Seattle? ;)

I was a Kucnich fan ever since I saw him on Tom Snyder back in the 1970s...probably before some of you were born, and well before I ever thought Id end up in Ohio.  Liked him them and like him now.

But Im cool with Marcy Kaptur, too.  She's just as liberal as Dennis, but without the "hot" personality.  So a win either way.

It will be interesting to follow Kucincih after this.  He might end up like Fred Harris (former left-populist politico from Oklahoma of all places)  and get a teaching gig.

So best wishes to Marcy Kaptur.  Hope she defeats whoever the rat-bastard GOP puts up against her.

I'm cool with Marcy too, but she's definitely not as liberal as "DENNIS!".  As his campaign commercials showed, she voted for the war funding, and didn't oppose the initial Healthcare Reform legislation the way he did because it "didn't go far enough".  So no, she's not just as liberal as Dennis.  I look forward to seeing him on Fox News to argue opposing viewpoints with the likes of Hannity & O'Reilly

Update - I wouldn't worry too much about any ratbastard opposing Marcy either - the primary featured Joe the Plumber and some other unknown

Five bucks says denny will be on the apprentice within the year

As was noted above, a lot of Kucinich's old representation on Cleveland's west side went to Marcia Fudge's new district. There were hundreds of "DENNIS!" signs up in Cleveland neighborhoods where he wasn't on the ballot anymore. I'm sure quite a few folks were surprised on Tuesday when they went to the polls and saw Marcia Fudge or some other candidate on the ballot instead of Kaptur/Kucinich. The big state view maps in the papers just didn't have the resolution to see the gerrymandering that took place as there are now 4 different congressional districts west of the Cuyahoga River in Cuyahoga County.

Kaptur picked up 94% of the Lucas County vote (22,269) versus Kucinich's 72.5% for Cuyahoga County (22,800)

So best wishes to Marcy Kaptur.  Hope she defeats whoever the rat-bastard GOP puts up against her.

Joe "The Plumber" Wurzelbacher ...  I sh!t you not.  (mind blown)

Reportedly there is a Texas anti-Dem incumbent SuperPAC backing him.

I thought this was funny also--just goes to show you the power of incumbency!    I wonder if Dennis' staff were working the wrong district too?  Old habits are hard to break!

^Are you kidding? That's gonna be the best reality show this year!

Not kidding, his yard signs are going to have to be chained down to stop people picking up souvenirs.

You're just making stuff up and putting it on the internet.

How so?  Steve's always looked out for Cleveland and he spoke out on behalf of NCB being saved rather than PNC being allowed to use TARP money to swallow them up.

Had he been in the majority, he would have had more clout on this issue.

Having a Congressional Representative based in Toledo to also cover Cleveland/NE Ohio is certainly one of the more asinine developments coming out of our political system as of late. I'm sure stranger things have happened, but that doesn't justify this one.

^ i hear you and i wouldnt have ever believed it possible, if not for the cold hard facts of the evaporation of so many of ne ohio's peeps. the cle metro population is barely hanging onto 2M souls these days no? that has gotta change to put a stop to this.

There are 8-10 congressional districts within "NEO" depending upon how you want to define it.  This is not a population problem, it's a drawing problem.  They chose to draw a district that at points is a third of a mile wide.  If there were more population in NEO they'd just draw the district thinner in other spots to reach the same end point.

^ i think i get that but not sure - do you have a 'new' map of it?
