Are you kidding me?! Canton can build light rail but we got stuck with a glorified bus lane down Euclid. No offense Canton, l hope you can pull it off but if you do what does that say about political leadership in Cleveland? Sheesh.

The Healthline project in Cleveland was completed over 10 years ago. The comparison to this project in Canton is not relevant.  Different time, different circumstances, different leadership.

Besides, this Canton project is only proposed so far, not built.

^ Different time? Ten years ago isn't the problem. Other cities around the country managed to build light rail since then and others are in the process now. I know we had different leadership and THEY couldn't pull it off. Today, with new leaders we're not even talking about light rail. That's how far away from it we are.

I'm sure Canton won't be able to pull it off either. But the fact they're even talking about it and we're not tells you all you need to know about Cleveland getting more light rail. Hell, we're probably closer to losing all our rail than we are to expanding it.

SARTA to hold public meetings on streetcar proposal

"CANTON – The Stark Area Regional Transit Authority will hold public meetings Wednesday and Thursday to discuss a proposed streetcar project connecting downtown Canton, Pro Football Hall of Fame and Hall of Fame Village, Belden Village area, and the Akron-Canton Airport."

I replied in the intercity rail thread, because instead of a streetcar this should be a phase of Canton-Akron-Cleveland regional rail.

Very important to note that HealthLine was originally proposed as a rail project. So at a similar time in its planning to this Canton proposal, the intention was a rail project.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

^ Believe me Brian l definitely remember that the Health Line was originally planned as a rail project. Man l was so excited at the time. Then as we kept reading about how rail expensive was l began to see the writing on the wall. I knew somehow, someway a train would be replaced by a bus and sure enough that's what we got.

My real problem was knowing other cities could do it but not us. Still pisses me off.

"The project would likely cost between $50 million and $100 million and would take about 5 years to complete, Rosenberger said.

The plan is to use existing track from the former Wheeling & Lake Erie Railroad along I-77, he said, with additional track to be installed in the downtown area. The light rail would consist of five hydrogen-powered streetcars that can hold about 100 people each, he said.

Streetcar service would operate from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Streetcars would stop at the stations every 15 minutes, and the total trip time from the first stop – downtown – to the last stop at the airport would take about 30 minutes, Rosenberger said."

Love it!

Yeah that's awesome. The more people are exposed to rail, the more they'll demand it elsewhere.

The Stark County area is pretty conservative so I am not optimistic this will proceed but it's possible.

I heard that Aultman Hospital will be formally joining UH over the next 2 years. I heard this from an Aultman Hospital director.

Back in December 2020, AultCare members could see UH PCPs, so I guess it was only a matter of time.

Three historical buildings recently were demolished in Downtown Massillon. It's quite sad. The ones I'll be be focusing on here the two that had partially collapsed and were thus condemned and ordered to be demolished. It was quite an undertaking as the two buildings were situated between two other older historical buildings so it was a delicate procedure.

The other one was--I think?--planned to be demolished and redeveloped and was not a part of the other two. I have been meaning to get pictures but I haven't been active here in a while and I just haven't thought about it. Perhaps I will this week.

Here's an article about it the first two.

I'll have more to share later. Whole situation to me is depressing. Although these two buildings were vacant for a long time, this was in the heart of downtown in the only few blocks remaining that make downtown what it is, honestly. Feels like Massillon is just slowly losing a lot of its historical luster. I really hope it gets redeveloped in an urban fashion and just doesn't remain vacant forever.

To top it all off, they recently redid the streetscaping here and it looked exceptionally nice....then this happens, lol.

^Agreed, it is very sad. They should have spent the $400,000+ stabilizing the facades. It is a punch right to the heart of downtown.

Wow. Very sad.

It's now up to 4 buildings total. I don't know what the 4th building is.

News article here.

Considering I live in Massillon, I should make it a point to physically see which ones they're talking about, LOL. But I honestly have no idea what the 4th one is. I have a suspicion it was the "Tiger Rags" building as that was being discussed at a different city council meeting.

Canton officials are working with Stark Parks, the county’s park district, on a proposal to transform the site of its former wastewater treatment plant in Pike Township into a new park.

Following the termination of a lease of a property that was the site of 9 miles of equestrian trails, Stark Parks needed to find a new location for the trails.

...

The 500-acre plot of land features rolling hills, ponds and wildlife. It’s located in Pike Township but owned by Canton.
