So yeah, we have had very mild temps so far (knock on wood) so I've managed to get out and take a few shots here and there. No real rhyme or reason to them - just some from the east side, downtown, west side, and wrapping up at the Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve (which will be a definite must once spring actually arrives).

A typical winter Saturday morning, with no events at Gateway:

Make note of the Rose Building (Medical Mutual) and that stretch in general - it gets blown to bits in the 'Avengers' movie  :shoot:

cle022012_2.jpg

Pardon the windshield tint, the building on the left is the Halle Building (formerly Halle Bros. department store). Quite a bit of Hollywood here - actress Halle Berry was named after it, and it served as the backdrop/workplace for Drew Carey on his show:

Some residential conversions in the pipeline plus new construction at CSU might liven up this stretch:

cle022012_4.jpg

Out to the east side via Euclid Avenue - not the greatest architecture on the right but at least it's built up to the sidewalk. Baby steps, I guess.

cle022012_5.jpg

Continuing on Euclid:

cle022012_6.jpg

cle022012_7.jpg

More Hollywood in the 216 - these were used in the filming of 'Fun Size', starring Victoria Justice. They weren't originally these colors but the film crew jazzed them up (way up!) and left them this way when they left:

The next two buildings (churches) worry me based on their proximity to the Cleveland Clinic:

cle022012_9.jpg

cle022012_10.jpg

Uptown mixed-use ahead, new Museum of Contemporary Art on the right:

cle022012_11.jpg

Further up Euclid:

cle022012_12.jpg

And into Cleveland Heights on Mayfield Road:

cle022012_13.jpg

Back down to Cedar, heading toward downtown - wish I could close the road for a few minutes on a nice day and get this shot  :|

cle022012_14.jpg

Melt went east:

cle022012_15.jpg

Cleveland Heights high school clocktower - could use a little spiffing up:

cle022012_16.jpg

Nice details on a building on Cedar:

cle022012_17.jpg

Cedar Fairmount neighborhood of Cleveland Heights:

cle022012_18.jpg

They love tudor in the Heights!

cle022012_19.jpg

Back in the city proper, the new Doubletree is looking great after extensive renovations:

cle022012_20.jpg

Hopefully we'll soon be able to say the same for the larger building on the right:

cle022012_21.jpg

Almost back downtown:

cle022012_22.jpg

And here we are - 41 days until opening day, fyi:

cle022012_23.jpg

Let me make a point or two:

cle022012_24.jpg

Keep on trucking, or guarding... err...

cle022012_25.jpg

A day or so later, the sun decided to come out and play for a while; these shots are from the west side; Cliff Drive near Edgewater Park:

cle022012_26.jpg

Scranton Road:

cle022012_27.jpg

Both from I-90 - again, wish I could close the road for a few minutes to get crisper shots on these.

cle022012_28.jpg

cle022012_29.jpg

Back on Scranton Road:

cle022012_30.jpg

Note to self - bury utility lines along Scranton:

cle022012_31.jpg

Although this sign on West 117th is alright, I really miss the old "Hard Times" sign.

cle022012_32.jpg

Along Clifton Blvd:

cle022012_33.jpg

Loving how the Ernst and Young tower will fill in the gap from this angle:

cle022012_34.jpg

Zipping through Tremont:

cle022012_35.jpg

And over to Spring Road near the Hinckley Road industrial park:

cle022012_36.jpg

Some shots of Old Brooklyn (maybe Brooklyn, not quite sure of the borders):

cle022012_44.jpg

At some point, this won't be Deadman's Curve:

cle022012_45.jpg

cle022012_46.jpg

Quay 55 - does anyone have photos of this when it was just a gutted shell sitting along the Lake?

cle022012_47.jpg

Soon to be shuttered:

cle022012_48.jpg

Yeah, they don't make power plants like this anymore:

cle022012_49.jpg

Alright, we're at the nature preserve - I'm definitely making some return trips when the weather improves and things start to bloom:

Hope you enjoyed!

Nice shots pumpkin!

Jack Frost Donuts!

Spring will come! Thanks for the hopeful tour.

Oh... oh... oh...

Where's the snow?? And where's the people? Looked like neutron-bomb-city until we got up the hill into the Heights.

But great pics as always. I was waiting to see the reeaaaallly wide photo that was causing me to scroll far to the right to read the photo captions. :)

I always dig the angles of downtown Cleveland.

I always dig the angles of downtown Cleveland.

True. You look at it from the west side of downtown, which developed first, and it looks like an older, northeastern city. But if you look at it from the East side of downtown, it looks like one of those cities that grew up postwar, like Columbus, Indianapolis or Nashville.

Thanks! I love the views of downtown from the nature preserve. I wish the TT were visible from that angle though.

Great shots and tour!

FYI, there has been a fundraising campaign for several years to repair/replace the CHHS clock tower.  At least I hope there is as I donated several years ago.

Great shots, as always.

Wow, its amazing how one can live in this city and not see most of these amazing views of downtown/city proper such as myself :'( lol. Great shots as always! Makes you kind of wanna get up and do something LOL, thanks again :)

I agree with you on those powerlines along Scranton...but THESE are fantastic!  I love this shot:

cle022012_14.jpg

Cleveland's looking sharp! Nice thread, Mayday.

I think that I have a shot of Quay 55 when it was still an empty shell. If I do, I'll scan and upload it.

Re: this power plant. Unit 18, which is the east end, is the only unit still operating, but on a part-time basis. The older four were shut down in 1993.

The old abandoned brick apartment building across the street from your taco bell/spitfire saloon has had new windows put in it recently. I'm hopeful someone is rehabing it back into apartments.

  • 2 weeks later...

Had to dig this up like gold from the gold rush :-D, just had to marvel at these pics once again :-)
