Business owners thrilled at Main St. opening

By KATHIE DICKERSON

Staff Writer

COSHOCTON - It's not Christmas, but some downtown merchants feel as though they've received an early present.  It's been almost four months since motorists have been able to travel Main Street from one end to the other.  The 300 block of Main Street has been closed to through traffic since the fire. Monday morning, city employees began placing concrete barriers around the front of the Park Hotel, with plans to have the street re-opened to accommodate two-way traffic by Wednesday.

The north side of the 300 block will be closed for parking so east-bound traffic can travel in that lane.  Matt Foster, city street superintendent, said he learned Friday his crew would be working on the project this week.  Engineers at David A. Derwacter and Associates sent a letter to Mayor Tim Turner on Oct. 27, which stated that placing concrete barricades on the centerline of Main Street would allow a 48-foot safety zone in front of the building and 30 feet for traffic flow.

ODOT can't loan Coshocton concrete bariers?

Sad to hear about this, hopefully something with a decent facade goes in its place. It wasn't the prettiest place, but something modern and out of place could be worse.

Hope they get things going quickly.

By KATHIE DICKERSON

COSHOCTON - After two years of delays, officials said Tuesday they expect to buy the land next month that could house a $100 million ethanol plant in Coshocton County.

"It takes longer to put the deal together than it does to build the plant," Nick Petroff, attorney for Coshocton Ethanol LLC, told the Coshocton City/County Port Authority Board.

Park Hotel debris removal begins

By KATHIE DICKERSON

Staff Writer

COSHOCTON - Removal of debris from the Park Hotel in the 300 block of Main Street started Monday, and neighbors are glad.  The debris is being hauled to an asbestos-certified landfill in Muskingum County, said Jerry Zwelling, who owns the Park Hotel property.  If the company follows proper removal procedures there should be no type of environmental or health problems, said Jim Leach, spokesperson for the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency Southeast District Office.

When all is said and done, one story of the block wall that faces Main Street will remain standing, said Mayor Tim Turner.  Zwelling has no definite immediate plans, but envisions a new Park Hotel.  "The goal is to reconstruct another building there and it will look like it always did," Zwelling said.

Work stopped on Park Hotel cleanup again

By KATHIE DICKERSON

Staff Writer

COSHOCTON - A hazardous situation and a disagreement over who's responsible for the west wall at the former Park Hotel site has put cleanup efforts on hold again.  Damage to an adjacent building was repaired with a new 42-foot high by 100-foot-long wall to replace the one once shared by the Park Hotel and the building that houses the Coshocton Antique Mall at 315 Main St.  That work was done under the supervision of general contractor Gemini Corporation.

If debris removal at the site continues, the spoiled wall, which became unstable after connecting I-beams were cut, could topple down into the asbestos-contaminated rubble, said Bruce Weingarth, manager of the air pollution control division of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency's Southeast District office.  If it's knocked down into the scrap that was the Park Hotel, then it, too, will have to be taken to the asbestos-certified landfill at an additional expense to the Park Hotel owner, Weingarth said.  The building's owner, Jerry Zwelling of Zanesville, hired Ohio Technical Services Inc. to clean up wreckage left by a July 9, 2005, fire. The company, which is specially licensed for asbestos removal, started work the end of February.

Park Hotel site progress

Main Street parking should open soon

By KATHIE DICKERSON

Staff Writer

COSHOCTON - Cleanup activity has resumed on the site of the former Park Hotel, and "we're hoping to reopen Main Street by the end of this week," City Service Director Jerry Stenner said Tuesday.  The work resumed in the 300 block of Main Street this week after the owner of the former hotel, Jerry Zwelling of Zanesville, and Ohio Technical Services Inc. came to an agreement on how to finish removing wreckage left by the July 9, 2005 fire.

Ohio Technical Services Inc., which is specially licensed for asbestos removal, started removing asbestos contaminated debris at the end of February.  Work was halted earlier this month after a wall that was damaged by the fire became unstable.  The wall was shared by the former hotel and an adjacent building.  An agreement was reached where half the wall, down to the first floor, would be knocked into the contaminated rubble, and excavation work could continue.  The remainder will be knocked into the cavern left when all the tainted debris is removed.

Main Street traffic returns to normal

COSHOCTON — Life in the 300 block of Main Street is almost back to normal after city street crews removed traffic barriers Thursday that have been in place for nine months.  The removal of charred remains and rubble from the July 2005 Park Hotel fire was completed this week which allowed street crews to move the barriers from the middle of Main Street to the sidewalk in front of the former site of the hotel.  Crews also painted traffic lanes which permitted regular two-way traffic in the area just after noon.

“It looks really nice now that they finally got all that dead stuff out that was just hanging there,” said Donna Ryan, who works at the courthouse.  Ryan and co-worker, Sheryl Murray, also welcome back the parking spaces that were lost because of the barriers used to keep people away from the Park Hotel site.  “When we had jury trials people had a hard time finding a spot to park,” Murray said. “It will be good to have Main Street back.”

Teen charged with Park Hotel blaze up for release

COSHOCTON - The Coshocton teen who is serving time in prison for his involvement in the Park Hotel fire will return to Coshocton County Common Pleas Court this week.  Richard J. McMillan, 18, who has served about eight months of his three-year sentence, is up for judicial release.

McMillan pleaded guilty to aggravated arson, a first-degree felony, in October 2005.  cMillan and four juveniles were in the basement of the abandoned hotel on July 9, 2005, when he started a fire that consumed the building and an adjoining store and injured one firefighter.  The four younger teens were found guilty of misdemeanor charges in juvenile court.

Teen released from prison less than a year after Park Hotel fire

By VALERIE GRACE

Coshocton Tribune

COSHOCTON - Judicial release was granted Tuesday to the teen charged with starting the Park Hotel fire in July 2005.  With Public Defender Jeff Mullen and Prosecuting Attorney Bob Batchelor both for the release, the decision didn't come easy for Judge Richard I. Evans after hearing from property owner Jerry Zwelling.

"(Richard McMillan) should be an example for anyone else who would be so foolish," Zwelling told the court. "He's still a young man and if he spends the entire time he'll be a young man when he gets out."  McMillan, 19, pleaded guilty to aggravated arson, a first-degree felony, in October 2005.  He has been in custody about 11 months of a three-year sentence.

Coshocton Ethanol gets state loan for substation

By KATHIE DICKERSON

Staff Writer

COSHOCTON - The ethanol project in Coshocton County has received another incentive from the state to ensure the creation of 41 new full-time positions in the county.  The State Controlling Board approved a $1.8 million loan this week for Coshocton Ethanol, LLC, to aid in the expansion of current operations.

A subsidiary of California-based Altra, Inc., Coshocton Ethanol began construction of a new facility in July and will produce about 60 million gallons of ethanol per year when completed in September 2007.  The funds will be used to construct an electric substation and transmission lines to serve the plant, said Joe Robertson, interim director of the Coshocton City/County Port Authority.

About 70 people are currently working construction at the future home of the ethanol plant located about four miles south of downtown Coshocton off County Road 271 in Franklin Township, Robertson said.  Plans are nearly finalized by the city of Coshocton to make an application for a permit to install an 8-inch force main line to the ethanol plant with funds from an Ohio Water Development Authority Local Economic Development loan, said Jerry Stenner, city service director.

Ethanol plant construction 'to get real busy'

By JOSHUA CHANEY

Staff Writer

COSHOCTON - The Coshocton Ethanol plant site is seeing major improvements, according to Jack Hamel, general manager of the facility.  "Construction of the ethanol plant is well under way," he said.  "It is anticipated that construction will continue through the summer months and that the plant will start up this fall."

About 15 percent of work is finished, according to Hamel.  There are currently about 75 construction employees on site, and the number of construction personnel will increase as the construction progresses.  "It's going to get real busy this summer," he said.

The plant currently has two full-time employees including Hamel and a construction site representative.

Polar Express Deal reached, train to roll for two weekends this winter

By LEE MORRISON, T-R Business Editor

COSHOCTON – Departures from Dennison to the “North Pole” via the Polar Express will return for two weekends this year.  The decision regarding the popular family rail excursion with Santa Claus was announced during a press conference Tuesday morning in the Ohio Central Railroad System headquarters near Coshocton.

The excursion had been in jeopardy because Ohio Central had raised issues of liability and potential scheduling and delivery deadlines for its freight traffic as reasons when it cut back the number of Polar Express excursions from three weekends two years ago to one last year.  However, after a push by Dennison and Tuscarawas County civic leaders, a deal was reached with the railroad.  This year, the Polar Express will be conducted over two weekends for a total of 20 trips.  Last year’s one weekend offered about a dozen trips.  Tickets go on sale Thursday at the Dennison Depot Museum.
