Don't diss Big Sandy!!!

It's just as charming as Cincinnati Gardens

800px-Big_Sandy_Superstore_Arena.jpg

We went to an indoor demolition derby there and were so afraid that we were going to get carbon monoxide poisoning that we got up and left.

I hope a renovated US Bank happens, it is needed, but the City/County needs to be really careful. Still reeling from the bad PBS deal.

More for incentives and not borrowing money and writing checks. It is really the responsibility of the owners of US Bank Arena to fund the

renovation. Their people are smarter than elected politicians.

But does Cincinnati need a large venue downtown like US Bank Arena?

It's very rare for a metropolitan area over 1 million not to have a downtown (or nearby ala UD Arena or Scope in Norfolk) arena, regardless if a university plays there or not.  Hell, even Huntington has Big Sandy Superstore Arena!

Welcome Comrades!

That is a complete assault on the eyes.

^But they had $3 20oz Icehouse drafts when I lived there in the mid-2000s

It has future mega-church written all over it.

There you go dissing Big Sandy again!

I'm watching you, RABBITRASH!!!

Editorial from the Business Courier, highlighting how Kansas City has made their new arena work financially: http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/blog/2015/09/commentary-why-it-s-not-crazy-to-think-a-u-s-bank.html

That article made me feel jealous of Kansas City... until I spend some time on Google Maps and saw where their football and baseball stadiums are... and then I was reminded of how lucky Cincinnati is to have the Red, Bengals, US Bank Arena, and the Convention Center all within walking distance of the urban center and riverfront. Pretty cool. With all of the hotels being built, a renovated US Bank Arena would solidify Cincinnati as a top-tier event-hosting city.

One thing about Kansas City is that they don't have other similar sized cities near them.  Omaha's metro is about the size of Dayton and is just under three hours away. The nearest similarly sized city is Saint Louis and that's 3:45 away. Cincinnati has to compete with Columbus, Indy, Louisville (and Lexington and Dayton) all within 2 hours drive for the same concerts and events.

Kansas City has no big university.  The closest one is University of Kansas in Lawrence, which is about 40 miles away.  This has the unfortunate effect of sucking a lot of the young adult energy out of the city since people regularly make the drive to Lawrence to go to bars and concerts.

US Bank Arena has a number of "top tier" pop music acts coming through in the next year: Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Maroon 5.

I'd love to see the Arena renovated, but it seems like it's good enough for these big-name acts. If a tour passes over Cincinnati, it's probably not due to a lack of facilities.

On top of that, building a new arena isn't going to give us all of the acts that go to other cities. If they prioritize Cincinnati, Louisville, Columbus, and Indianapolis evenly, we are only going to get about 25%-50% of those concerts anyway because they won't always skip those other cities. They don't go to all of those cities currently and skip us because our venue isn't top tier. They all have good arenas right now, so we could make a small dent in the number of shows we steal, but it wouldn't bring all of them.

I would like to see a renovation of US Bank, but I don't think we need to spend hundreds of millions of city dollars on it.

Add to the list of 2016 headliners: Billy Joel.

^ I couldn't agree more.  I have nothing against Billy Joel, but the mayor must be absolutely desperate for attention since he's making a BFD out of this.

Wow, when I read the original article I couldn't think of one single singer/band that would warrant a major announcement. When I saw Billy Joel I almost laughed out loud. I didn't even realize he still toured. And I like Billy Joel. This just reeks of small-time when you have a make a big deal out of Billy Joel coming to town.

I like Billy Joel also, but like others have pointed out.....why such a big deal?  BILLY JOEL DAY IN CINCINNATI???  Your kidding...right?  No offense intended!

Cranley: too busy to make it to the arrival or testing of the Streetcar, but plenty of time to host a press conference about a Billy Joel concert.

L.A. had a Dokken Day in 1988.

I wonder if some adviser to the mayor had a misperception of Bill Joel's popularity here (his last concert sold out in 20 minutes because ELTON JOHN was the headliner for crying out loud!) and hoped to piggy back on it?

Or maybe the mayor hopes to be invited onto the stage during the concert:

LOL Cranley is such an embarrassment to Cincinnati. I'm sure he'll be in the front row singing his little heart out to Piano Man  :banger:

Cranley is such a dufus.  Maybe he had to get his name out there after his stinging park levy loss, but this is ridiculous.  Didn't someone say he is the kind of guy that 60 and 70 year-olds think is cool (or something like that)?  If you want to understand why Cranley does not support the streetcar and does not get it, this could be used as Exhibit A.

U.S. Bank Arena renovation plans put NCAA basketball bid on hold

The plans to complete an enormous renovation of downtown Cincinnati’s U.S. Bank Arena are proceeding even though progress has been quiet. But those plans are effectively putting Cincinnati’s chances to bid on hosting men’s NCAA basketball tournament games on hold.

The arena hasn’t added two locker rooms to give it four in total as it originally had planned, Kristin Ropp, the arena’s general manager, told me on Wednesday evening at the Cincinnati Sports Professional Network’s annual awards ceremony. The NCAA typically requires arenas to have at least four locker rooms in order to host NCAA men’s regional tournaments. Those regionals have four teams playing in each session.

I was just present at a small talk by UC's athletic director Mike Bohn. One of the audience members asked him about UC and the renovations to the US Bank Arena. He basically said that they really wanted to make it work, but the city officials weren't promising enough to them. Basically, they would have given a little money to help UC and then go to the tax payers for the rest of the money. If it were to fail, most of the financial burden would fall on UC. In addition, the student representatives said they would go downtown as long as the team was winning, but otherwise he was told they wouldn't (paying for parking was an issue for the students). He described it as being too big of a risk for the University. Finally, in his own words he says "y'know, we don't even have the trolley coming up here! Maybe if we had the trolley up here to move students back and forth easily it would have been a different story". Then made some comment about how he knows the streetcar is a politically sensitive subject and didn't mean to ruffle anyone's feathers.

The Gibson Greeting Cards site is at 2100 Section Rd, adjacent to the railroad tracks... but it doesn't appear to actually have a direct connection to the tracks. That seems like a missed opportunity. If everything has to be shipped by truck, then what's the point of being right next to the tracks?

UC basketball announced they will play their 2017-18 season in KENTUCKY while the Shoe is being upgraded.

How terrible is US Bank Arena when they can't get UC to play there. I think this arena is a bigger albatross than the Millennium Hotel for DT.

People are assuming that UC is playing in Kentucky because US Bank isn't "modern" enough.  Many top programs like Duke play in very old arenas and UK (Duke's arena was built in 1940 and only has 9,000 seats), less than 100 miles south, plays in an arena that opened the same year as US Bank.

No NHL or NBA team is coming to Cincinnati even if we build a new arena.  Garth Brooks just sold out three nights in a row at U.S. Bank.

Being "modern" has nothing to do with what year the building was built though. Madison Square Garden was built in 1968, but it has been kept up and has all the modern amenities that an NBA team requires. Rupp Arena is from the 70's but was recently renovated and modernized on the inside (but the upper levels still have terrible bench seating). US Bank arena definitely needs some help, Garth Brooks could have sold out an abandoned airplane hangar for three nights in a row, that has nothing to do with the venue's quality.

BB&T has similar new amenities that mimic what UC students will have in the renovated Fifth Third.

There are various reasons why UC might have chosen to do their home games at NKU or Xavier instead of US Bank.  One is price.  Another might have been conflicts with the Cyclones (not hard to imagine that the Cyclones lease gives their schedule priority over anything else at the arena).

Fact is Duke has one of the top 5 programs in college baskeball history and they play in a gym so low the hoops hang off the roof.  Their primitive arena is a non-issue in recruiting players or staff or fans.

This might be looking into a crystal ball, but looks like US Bank Arena might be getting some upgrades. With the official announcement that US Bank will host the first and second rounds of play in the NCAA basketball tournament in 2022. Can only hope that the arena comes out swinging, so the city isn't an embarrassment in the national spotlight...

h

There is a fairly low bar for first and second rounds game. Many of the arenas are "hockey-first" and the cities bid for these gains as a way to get some competitive basketball events in the city.

Wolstein Center in Cleveland has hosted them, for crying out loud. I thin USBank will do just fine, as the sizeable crowds do not travel until the Sweet 16 and Elite games. These games are still a lot of fun, though. It will be fun and good for Cincinnati no doubt.

I guess this means there will not be a major renovation coming any time soon.

Renovation required by NCAA for game to be played at US Bank Arena according to officials. Otherwise deal will be plugged.

^ Somehow I do not see this happening. Looks like the games will be played somewhere else.

I'm guessing 5/3 Arena is the backup plan if US Bank Arena isn't renovated in time.  US Bank was chosen so UC could potentially play in Cincinnati that year.  UC wouldn't be eligible to play here if the tournament was held at 5/3.

No, I think Cincinnati would be dropped altogether if US Bank isn't upgraded. It definitely puts a lot of people in an interesting position. It could affect the Major's race. An outdated area hurts the city. Not just this tournament but any future events.

Somewhat related, the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn is kicking out their NHL team in a year or so. Owners of that area have said they can make more money hosting other events instead of a professional hockey team. That's amazing to me. All you hear is the need for a regular tenet.

They probably have a bad deal with the team cutting them in to food & beverage or similar.  Plus, the suite revenue on NHL nights is definitely shared.

^ Cincinnati Islanders has a nice ring to it.

NHL: Now, introducing the Cleveland-Cincinnati PuckCommuters

They had two guys on 700WLW today arguing for demolition and replacement of the arena.  Looks like there will be a mini-war for public funds between this and FC Cincinnati just a few years before we get back into it with Mike Brown in the 2020s.
