More for incentives and not borrowing money and writing checks. It is really the responsibility of the owners of US Bank Arena to fund the renovation. Their people are smarter than elected politicians.

It's very rare for a metropolitan area over 1 million not to have a downtown (or nearby ala UD Arena or Scope in Norfolk) arena, regardless if a university plays there or not. One thing about Kansas City is that they don't have other similar sized cities near them. Omaha's metro is about the size of Dayton and is just under three hours away. The nearest similarly sized city is Saint Louis and that's 3:45 away. Cincinnati has to compete with Columbus, Indy, Louisville (and Lexington and Dayton) all within 2 hours drive for the same concerts and events.
September 8, 20159 yr Kansas City has no big university. The closest one is University of Kansas in Lawrence, which is about 40 miles away. This has the unfortunate effect of sucking a lot of the young adult energy out of the city since people regularly make the drive to Lawrence to go to bars and concerts.
November 11, 20159 yr US Bank Arena has a number of "top tier" pop music acts coming through in the next year: Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Maroon 5. I'd love to see the Arena renovated, but it seems like it's good enough for these big-name acts. If a tour passes over Cincinnati, it's probably not due to a lack of facilities.
November 11, 20159 yr On top of that, building a new arena isn't going to give us all of the acts that go to other cities. If they prioritize Cincinnati, Louisville, Columbus, and Indianapolis evenly, we are only going to get about 25%-50% of those concerts anyway because they won't always skip those other cities. They don't go to all of those cities currently and skip us because our venue isn't top tier. They all have good arenas right now, so we could make a small dent in the number of shows we steal, but it wouldn't bring all of them. I would like to see a renovation of US Bank, but I don't think we need to spend hundreds of millions of city dollars on it.

But those plans are effectively putting Cincinnati’s chances to bid on hosting men’s NCAA basketball tournament games on hold. The arena hasn’t added two locker rooms to give it four in total as it originally had planned, Kristin Ropp, the arena’s general manager, told me on Wednesday evening at the Cincinnati Sports Professional Network’s annual awards ceremony. May 11, 20169 yr I was just present at a small talk by UC's athletic director Mike Bohn. One of the audience members asked him about UC and the renovations to the US Bank Arena. He basically said that they really wanted to make it work, but the city officials weren't promising enough to them. Basically, they would have given a little money to help UC and then go to the tax payers for the rest of the money. If it were to fail, most of the financial burden would fall on UC. In addition, the student representatives said they would go downtown as long as the team was winning, but otherwise he was told they wouldn't (paying for parking was an issue for the students). He described it as being too big of a risk for the University. Finally, in his own words he says "y'know, we don't even have the trolley coming up here! Maybe if we had the trolley up here to move students back and forth easily it would have been a different story". Then made some comment about how he knows the streetcar is a politically sensitive subject and didn't mean to ruffle anyone's feathers.

February 13, 20178 yr UC basketball announced they will play their 2017-18 season in KENTUCKY while the Shoe is being upgraded. How terrible is US Bank Arena when they can't get UC to play there. I think this arena is a bigger albatross than the Millennium Hotel for DT.
February 13, 20178 yr People are assuming that UC is playing in Kentucky because US Bank isn't "modern" enough. Many top programs like Duke play in very old arenas and UK (Duke's arena was built in 1940 and only has 9,000 seats), less than 100 miles south, plays in an arena that opened the same year as US Bank. No NHL or NBA team is coming to Cincinnati even if we build a new arena. Garth Brooks just sold out three nights in a row at U.S. Bank.
February 13, 20178 yr Being "modern" has nothing to do with what year the building was built though. Madison Square Garden was built in 1968, but it has been kept up and has all the modern amenities that an NBA team requires. Rupp Arena is from the 70's but was recently renovated and modernized on the inside (but the upper levels still have terrible bench seating). US Bank arena definitely needs some help, Garth Brooks could have sold out an abandoned airplane hangar for three nights in a row, that has nothing to do with the venue's quality.

February 13, 20178 yr There are various reasons why UC might have chosen to do their home games at NKU or Xavier instead of US Bank. One is price. Another might have been conflicts with the Cyclones (not hard to imagine that the Cyclones lease gives their schedule priority over anything else at the arena). Fact is Duke has one of the top 5 programs in college baskeball history and they play in a gym so low the hoops hang off the roof. Their primitive arena is a non-issue in recruiting players or staff or fans.

Many of the arenas are "hockey-first" and the cities bid for these gains as a way to get some competitive basketball events in the city. Wolstein Center in Cleveland has hosted them, for crying out loud. I thin USBank will do just fine, as the sizeable crowds do not travel until the Sweet 16 and Elite games. These games are still a lot of fun, though. It will be fun and good for Cincinnati no doubt.

April 19, 20178 yr They had two guys on 700WLW today arguing for demolition and replacement of the arena. Looks like there will be a mini-war for public funds between this and FC Cincinnati just a few years before we get back into it with Mike Brown in the 2020s.
