March 1, 20196 yr 29 minutes ago, Lucas_uLsac said: The massive financial undertaking it requires to have a world class convention space should not be underestimated. It's a huge investment and commitment. And cities and conventions establish friendship and partnerships, which means the chances of poaching an event from a nearby city is unlikely. The Arnold currently going on in Columbus is almost ingrained in the city's dialect. The BOA and DCI events in Indy will likely never leave. It's going to be hard to compete with cities that already have inroads and established footholds in the convention realm. If Cincinnati is going to pursue these conventions in these cities, it has to be prepared for the fact that it may not be as successful as it would like. But I do think Cincinnati has elements of uniqueness that stand it apart from Indy or Columbus, which may lend to attracting certain conventions. Agreed. Cincinnati already has to overcome the division of our metro into 3 states, we shouldn't fight amongst ourselves in our own metro. Cincinnati is stronger when NKY is strong and they work together. The airport proves that. Most certainly. .Indy and Columbus have developed massive centers to get this business. It goes back to the 80s when they really started pushing this. Indy made their push with collegiate athletics, hence the NCAA moving there In the 90s. Indy really pushed the convention business and it has paid off. The whole RCA Dome and now Lucas Oil were developed with conventions in mind as well as football. I am not saying it will not be expensive, but if Cincy wanted to play in that space, it could certainly figure out a way to make it happen. It would be expensive, yes, but they could always build over the highway or go North or even South over the street to meet their goals. Point being, there is nothing that really prevents this (outside of cost). The convention hotel is a top priority and will likely be a first step. That I know is being talked about now and the city acquired the Convention Place Mall with the goal of exploring it as an option for a Convention Hotel. No matter what, it will take time and years to rreally get the business or poach business from Columbus per say. Not to say it could not happen.

Agreed, if Cincinnati truly had the will and funds to push a competitively sized convention facility and arena, then I believe it *could* sway some business from Columbus or Indianapolis. I think its biggest challenge then would be the state conventions that fill lots of dates and Columbus gets not only due to its facilities, but its location. Almost all the cities we are using for comparison have the immense benefit of being central located in their respective states, I guarantee they highlight this fact when choosing how to sell/market themselves to perspective conventions. Aside from that, I would guess that the years of relationships these cities have built with the large/golden ticket conventions like the Arnold Sports Festival or NCAA would prove a bit of a struggle for Cincinnati in any attempts to poach them. Basically, if Cincinnati wants to swim with the bigger fish in the convention world, it's going to have to take one h*ll of a gamble.
March 1, 20196 yr ^ It can start to be accomplished piecemeal. First, build the convention hotel to compete at that level. Next, work on a comprehensive plan to expand the center one way or not.
March 1, 20196 yr I don't think it's much of a priority for Cincinnati to have the region's main convention center or arena in Downtown Cincinnati. San Francisco did just fine all of these years with nothing but the Cow Palace. The Warriors are moving from Oakland to SF to the new Chase Center in 2020...but does that matter for a city that already has so much going on?
March 1, 20196 yr first post! - I have been checking this website daily since the days of CINCINNATI UPRISE. as long as money is unlimited... I would love to see a new convention center built at longworth hall - using the existing building as a hotel and have an atrium between it and the new convention center. would need to regrade and build over the railroad line, and then the new arena could be on 3rd Street at the current UPS facility - creating a new arena district similar to columbus. not too far from the core - especially if we could cap some of the new 75 whenever that happens. this could, jumpstart development west of 75 and expand/reclaim some of downtown's footprint. Plum street could then be reconnected & two new blocks in the city core could be redeveloped. this is just a weekend project for Dubai.

The Giants are near the top of attendance every year. The San Jose Sharks draw pretty well. The Warriors obviously draw well. Only the A's and 49ers draw poorly. The A's play in a horrific stadium for baseball. The 49ers moved to the suburbs.

March 4, 20196 yr The Who's Roger Daltrey visited Cincinnati recently as part of an event related to the 1979 deaths at Riverfront Coliseum: https://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2019/03/03/why-whos-roger-daltrey-finneytown-pay-his-respects/3003053002/ One of my uncles entered on the side of the plaza where the people were crushed and he told me that his arm got caught on one of the doors, so he came pretty close to getting seriously injured.

August 15, 20195 yr U.S. Bank Arena is getting a new name A sign of the times... U.S. Bank Arena is changing names. U.S. Bank decided not to renew its naming rights sponsorship at the arena. The Minneapolis-based bank, which has its roots in Cincinnati and is Greater Cincinnati’s largest market by deposits, has been the downtown arena’s naming rights sponsor since 2002. The arena is likely to start removing U.S. Bank’s branding and signs starting next week. August 15, 20195 yr 4 minutes ago, jmecklenborg said: The Crown. Technically, that was the name. As I understand it, The Coliseum was a different entity. When Doug K. bought the arena in 97 or so, it became The Crown for about ten minutes. Then Firstar Bank bought the rights. Then US Bank bought Firstar. Then the Reds never needed the arena space for the ballpark. Then the arena remained in a state of obsolete purgatory.
August 15, 20195 yr 1 hour ago, Gordon Bombay said: it became The Crown for about ten minutes. That's when they did renovations and replaced the original multi-colored seats with the maroon seats. 1 hour ago, Gordon Bombay said: the Reds never needed the arena space for the ballpark. The East Riverfront Garage was built in 1999, in anticipation of the demolition of Riverfront Stadium's parking garage, which was an enormous gift to the owners of The Coliseum The Crown. That's when they tore down the giant wooden staircase up to The Coliseum The Crown. At some point they also built the pedestrian connection to the Taylor Southgate Bridge. There wasn't a pedestrian connection from The Coliseum to the Central Bridge that I can recall. Side note: I've always liked that row of vending machines at the base of the big public landing staircase, right by the disused railroad tracks. Those weren't there in the 90s. They showed up around 2000. When it was The Crown Firstar Center U.S. Bank Arena.

August 16, 20195 yr Sorry, to double post, but here's some old school "Crown" stuff... Also, if you're like me and barely remember what the arena looked like before the 1996/1997 renovations, this website has some GREAT photos. EDIT: one more cool thing I just found. Original concept art for the arena from Clark Engineering based out of South Dakota and Minneapolis. CEC engineers the Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati, Ohio. This coliseum seats 16,000 people and costs $12,500,000. It was completed in 1975. Edited August 16, 20195 yr by Gordon Bombay

August 16, 20195 yr ^^Ah yes, Select-A-Seat instead of Ticketmaster. I can't even remember who the Select-A-Seat vendor was in Columbus; I think it was an insurance office or title company. It wasn't made to have a bunch of people in it at once and people were snaked all around the offices leaning against copiers and coffee machines.

It was similar to the Superdome in New Orleans. The concept was to make the arena look full on TV (before HD)

I remember Ticketron operating in the basement of my neighborhood's Van Luenen's, steps from the fishing rods and stacks of mulch. The walls were fake wood from the 70s and the floor was green tile from the 60s. Tickets would go on sale for concerts at like 7am on Saturdays and there would be lines out the doors of these stores, so obviously the stores loved them. In fact they probably had to pay Ticketron to set up shop. I also remember a transition away from department stores and toward record stores for ticket buying, but I don't recall any of the mall record stores selling concert tickets. I remember Coconuts having Ticketmaster, and they were a strip mall chain, not a mall chain.
