I'm home for Spring break and wanted to take advantage of the weather and check out some projects that have happened in the last 5 or so years since I left for college in Cincy. I started at Edgewater and wound up at the Nature Reserve on the east side. Due to the ominous looking weather I didn't get to go into the reserve to photograph the skyline like I was hoping, but I stopped over at the marina at Marginal Rd. Overall it was a fantastic day to walk around. It got a little grey shortly after leaving the west side so a lot of the pictures turned out pretty bland but I wasn't really there for the photos, so keep that in mind when looking at these. Hopefully they are interesting enough to keep you all entertained. Enjoy.

Greetings from Edgewater Park.

I've always loved the view from over here. Best in the city in my opinion other than from out on the lake.

I really enjoyed the Battery Park development. The architecture of some portions wasn't necessarily my taste, but the variation is great and I especially liked the detached homes. I am excited to see this built out.

This street was fantastic. I would have gone with something other than metal for the stairs, but other than that I really liked these houses.

I went around this area of town and stopped at some smaller housing developments that I've seen in pictures or through street view and wanted to see in person. I don't know when some of these were built, but I had yet to see them.

These were...interesting. I like them architecturally, but referring to them as 'urban villas' is a bit absurd. They're no more urban than the house I'm posting from in Broadview Heights right now. They do have an awesome view though.

I really liked how energetic and vibrant these were. A lot of people seem to be afraid of color in the Midwest which is a shame because it can really make for an exciting development.

I drove by these once at some point in the past and really liked what they were doing. They were under construction at the time and I'm happy with the result. Again, the colors are fun and I like the more updated take on a traditional Ohio City house.

After this I headed to the Flats West Bank to check out Stonebridge. Overall I'm really happy with the development. I have a couple friends who recently bought a place there and they love it. The interaction with the street, or lack thereof, is unfortunate, but the buildings play well with the old industrial aspects of the Flats. I am a fan.

After leaving the Flats I went and parked by The Pinnacle in the Warehouse District and walked around downtown from there. It was nice, although not really surprising, to see a lot of young people out and about in the Warehouse District. A lot of families were there too which was definitely good to see. The earlier these kids start liking the city, the better.

The Convention Center and Medical Mart are coming along quite nicely. This is the most exciting project in my mind in Cleveland. After watching the whole saga here for years, it is nice to finally see it actually happening, and happening quite quickly I might add.

I'm still unsure of how I feel about this addition architecturally (the entrance specifically) but I do like how striking it is. It is most certainly a focal point of the area.

I really REALLY liked what's happening around the MOCA. The building itself is pretty awesome, but the cladding is looking pretty bad. I'm trying to hold judgement until it's completely finished, but it's seriously wavy and plastic looking. It is looking quite cheap. I hope this changes as more is put up.

Goodbye from the east side. I hope you all enjoyed my trip across Cleveland as much as I did.

Great pics. Thanks for sharing

Awesome set!

Great set of pictures from all over the place! Thanks for sharing. And thanks for the picture updates on several projects going on throughout the city.

No problem! I don't know when the next opportunity I'll have to be able to really even be in Cleveland will be, so I figured might as well get it all in in one day. It was a long, but awesome day.

Great pics, I really like #101.

Fantastic pics# 4 is my favorite! Thanks for sharing.

Nice work! My faves were 55, 57 and 70.

Thanks much.

I just still dumbfounded about the color in the trees you see in #124 at this time in mid-MARCH!

^The even crazier thing is that the trees in Cincy are another 2 or 3 weeks ahead already. The first buds first started showing up in mid February. It's insane how warm/springlike it has been everywhere already.

Great stuff!  For the entry to the art museum, I can't tell from your post, but you know that only the glassy enclosure around the door is new, not the cantilevered concrete thingy, yes?

Wait a few days. The weather over the next few days should really lift that sap and start the leaves popping out by the weekend.

EDIT: I see a few other pictures in this thread showing some flowering trees, buds and other evidence of our early spring.

^^Yeah, I just feel none of it meshes all that well. None of it makes me want to approach the entrance to the building. The quality of the glass, however, is nice.

^The fact that it's going to be 85 for two days in Cincinnati is going to make a huge difference. I'm fully expecting my return this coming weekend to show a huge difference over when I left last week. This is always such a great part of the year, and I'm definitely down for it happening early and leaving the possibility for snow in the dust.

Wonderful photos!

THe west side is the best side.  Nice pics, thanks for sharing!

Beautiful!  I really like how those lofts you show in the beginning have a great lakes vocabulary to their architecture.

Great set--loads of good contemporary stuff is going up in Cleveland.

^^The best part about it is that said vocabulary really made me feel a connection to the lake even when it wasn't in site. This is extremely important in my eyes as the lake is our best resource and is really underutilized. Creating a connection in every way possible will only lead to continued progress along the waterfront. If some form of the lakefront plan from a few years ago finally makes its way into reality over the coming decades that would signal, in my mind at least, that the city has fully understood what it needed to do to reinvent itself as a place for people to live.

Great thread!  Like you, I too am headed back up to Cleveland this week (planned to on St. Patty's day, but was sick) to see some old friends and check out all the progress this city has made.  Great photos from the west side to the east side.

Great Job!

Nice work!!!

Great thread! Impressive infill, and University Circle is absolutely gorgeous!

A tremendously informative and enjoyable set of pictures, jmicha!  (You must be exhausted after such a wide-ranging photo-shoot.)  I was amazed at the amount of new residential development; this type of vibrant infill will certainly appeal to many urbanites and add desired density.  Needless to say, jmicha, much is expected of you now (namely, another photo thread) and soon.  Nice job!

Excellent upbeat set of photos, with appreciation for the new development that's taking place.

Great photos! Whenever I see anyone downtown taking pictures, I'm tempted to ask if they are from our board :)

nice work here and i appreciate the theme and seeing all the newer stuff going up around town.

re the best view of the city. i totally agreed that the best view is from the lake with edgewater second. however, a while back here on uo someone posted a shot taken from i think near the cle clinic that won me over as the best because it really captured a ton of the city all in one shot. still gotta love those edgewater views!

Thanks! Wow @ the trees & the amount of construction going up in Clev.

Thank you all for the compliments!

Haha, yes it was a tiring day. But a good tiring ;) And hopefully when I get back to Cincy this weekend I will find time to get out and photograph the city. I realized recently I've never actually properly photographed campus in the five years I've been there and that my most recent photos of downtown are missing Queen City Square, the Banks, etc. They're also five years old...so yeah, I'm definitely in need of some more time out photographing.

Great photos! Whenever I see anyone downtown taking pictures, I'm tempted to ask if they are from our board :)

I was actually stopped by multiple people throughout the day (as well as being yelled at from a car by a group of preppy looking guys in University Circle, but that's another story haha). They all asked what I was photographing and I told them development. The young guy in the Warehouse District completely understood and told me to have fun. The police officer by the Convention Center and Medical Mart was excited to see someone else excited about development and we had a short conversation about how quickly things were changing. The out-of-towners at the Marriott had a really unfortunate response though. When I said development they looked at me like I was insane. I turned around and pointed at the CC and MM construction and told them what that was. They had no clue there was any development happening downtown when it was clearly visible from their hotel. Cleveland's reputation definitely still needs some work, but as some of these major projects come online I have trouble believing the negative reputation it has in many people's eyes will last. This is why I'm often torn about leaving Cleveland for Cincinnati. I LOVE Cincinnati and fully intend to build my life there, but I also miss Cleveland and would love to be a part of its resurgence. Thankfully it's close enough that visiting isn't an issue since I wouldn't be able to handle only looking at pictures of the great stuff happening. It has been hard enough for the last five years. But in any case, Ohio is in an exciting time and I am WAY too proud of being an Ohioan to leave.

What a fantastic set of photos!  Thanks!

Looks like you had quite a good day on spring break! I am wondering if you stopped to eat anywhere... but there is another place for that conversation.

Good stuff! Thanks for sharing.

Yes, definitely a great photo thread!

Thanks for bumping. I missed this thread the first time around. What a great set.

I'm glad you are all enjoying this thread. At some point this summer I'm hoping to do a similar photo thread for Cincinnati. I don't have a working camera at the moment so I may have to borrow my dad's again as I did for this thread in order to do so. Hopefully that can happen in the upcoming weeks.
