Clifton project a sign of times for University of Cincinnati campus housing

After years of talk about developing the Uptown Crossings site in Clifton, there’s suddenly a burst of activity.

 

Columbus-based Hallmark Campus Communities is building an $11 million, 92-unit student housing project along Jefferson Avenue. Dubbed “University Edge,” it’s near the University of Cincinnati’s main campus. The fully furnished apartments will include 232 beds in a mix of two-, three- and four-bedroom units. The company also acquired an adjacent parcel at the corner of Jefferson and Ruther avenues for a second phase of 28 four-bedroom units, or 112 additional beds. No dollar figure was available for that phase.

 

Uptown Crossings was the name given to a large development site, including the University Edge properties, that was to have been home to a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health laboratory, but Cincinnati didn’t land that project. Other housing projects also were proposed but never panned out.

I should note, the location of this project seems to be very confusing.  Technically it's Corryville, on the Clifton Border (Ruther Ave splits corryville & Clifton)

Yeah... I was confused too. I was thinking the changed the name of the U Square @ The Loop bs... this is in Corryville.

 

But yes, thank you for posting. I didn't know about the OSHA Lab thing. When did that happen?

Yay, more demolitions for replacement by hideous architecture.

The majority of where this is being built was a flat lot for about a decade.  I think they took down two small historic buildings that were in decent shape. surely they could have worked around that.  The rest being demolished is a 70's style medical office building.

Doesn't excuse the poor architecture at all. And, yes, it would have been nice if they could have included the historic buildings. If they were replaced with decent design, I would be less upset about it, though.

 

Obviously, I am not fretting about the loss of the empty lot or the 70's building.

University Edge rezoning to lead to demolition, second phase

 

At its meeting June 6, Cincinnati City Council unanimously approved a rezoning that will allow for the expansion of Corryville's University Edge student apartment development.

 

The rezoning of the property at 3306 Ruther Avenue from OL Office Limited to CN-M Commercial Neighborhood-Mixed allows developers Hallmark Student Housing Cincinnati II, LLC to demolish a medical office building on the site and to construct two 14-unit buildings and 110 parking spaces.
