Allegheny West is one of Pittsburgh's most architecturally rich neighborhoods.  It's located on the north side... not far from the Ohio River... in the former city of Allegheny.  It's gorgeous 19th century rowhouses were home to many of Pittsburgh's leading industrialists and businessmen. 

 

Suburbanization and post-WW2 urban renewal decimated much of the neighborhood.  Many precious architectural treasures were lost as freeways were blasted through, gas stations replaced historic homes and neighborhoods were evacuated and left to decay. 

 

Luckily, remnants of this neighborhood remain in remarkable condition.  Beautiful structures on Western Avenue have recently been converted to commercial use... with ethnic restaurants, unique shops and martini bars sprouting up.  A segment of the population, recognizing the remarkable urban fabric of this area, has restored and preserved this fantastic area.

nice job, i love a neighborhood focus thread. hey one thing about the pitts is it is not boring!

 

some of that reminded me of columbus/cinci and baltimore, but not exactly it was uniqiue enough. is this near the warhol museum? we went to that museum the week it opened so thats the last time i've been in that area in pburgh.

 

the community college was gorgeous, in a way it reminded me of city college in harlem, in fact even better because it seems integrated into the neighborhood where city college (and ivy leaguer columbia too while we're at it) to their discredit are islands apart from the rest of harlem.

Magnificent houses and buildings. That looks like it would be a delightful place in summer.

Very nice.  That is perhaps the nicest community college anywhere.

I too love that neighborhood. I get mad when I see the area near the West End Bridge and Route 65. You can tell what that area use to be.

One thing I couldn't understand about True (the gay bar) - it's absolutely beautiful on the inside, but when I went there (twice, both on weekend nights) it was dead with just a handful of people and even they left around 11:30pm. If Cleveland had something that posh in the way of a martini bar, it would be swamped.

I wasn't aware True was an exclusively "gay bar"... I haven't been there... but I was under the impression it was open to all people... but was popular with gay clientele.
