Intereseting to see that the Hampton Inn is back on board with this. LAst year a Huntington Bank banner had to be removed from the Superior Ave wall on that building after being up only a short time.  Didn't go through the proper channels or something like that??

Same thing went for the Cambridge Bldg in the WHD, it also had a Huntington banner.

Last year the city ordered a bunch of banners down that we're not approved by the city or something. Hampton inn was one of them.

That's the old McDonald Investments building at Superior and East 9th.

I think its actually the building at E. 12th and Euclid across from Wyndham.  The old McDonald Investment building will be the new AmTrust Financial Services Building.

Here's a streetscape suggestion: convert numerous downtown streets -- Prospect, Ontario, West 9th -- from the moon's surface to something that would represent major city thoroughfares in a first-world nation. Or are we too busy building new roads in the exurbs and the countryside to afford taking care of what we already have?

And cut back on beautiful thoroughfares like SR2 in Lake County?  Where the pavement and sound walls are ALREADY crumbling?  I think Cleveland's moonscapes are holding up pretty well all things considered ;)

Some areas on these streets you mentioned are just plain embarassing. Of course, it's not only these 3 streets.

Just an observation.

I'd love to see the idea of 12th st extended across downtown.

Kindof like they reused the tress from the malls before ripping that up.  They wont.

Are you old enough to remember what this area of downtown was like before they built the Galleria? Sorry, but eliminating wind breaks like trees and vegetation in this area is not a good way to make this area more habitable. You know why they have railings along East 9th in front of the Federal Building? They're not for decoration. They're for holding on to so pedestrians don't get knocked over by the wind. And each winter, the newspapers would publish awesome photos of people trying to stay on their feet while walking through Erieview Plaza. The reason why Erieview Plaza was built upon because it was useless for months out of the year because of the wind. Even if the Galleria was empty, it would still be more useful than the plaza that preceded it. But maybe you can think of reasons getting rid of wind breaks is a good idea at this location?

I looked all over for pictures of that. I especially remember a newspaper photo of pedestrians forming a human chain to pull a pedestrian back to a railing at the Erieview Plaza. And you often didn't need to use physical effort to get moving on your roller skates or ice skates. The wind was sufficiently strong to get you going! The north-northwest winds are still strong in that area, but much less than they were thanks to the wind breaks added over the years. If this wind break is to be removed, then something else needs to be added.

I thought we had one/some posted here.  I remember pictures of workers building the galleria and the article discussed about how difficult it was to build due to the wind. 

 

I remember the "ice warning" signs and the "skate at your own risk" signs at Erieview Plaza.  That wind tunnel up East Ninth is no joke!

Are we certain that the entire section of trees is being removed?  From cursory looks at the renderings and the trees there on Google Streetview I don't think the whole lot will be removed.  Although it would be much better if they were to somehow work around the trees and still create their patio.  I think that is one of the things that makes Reddstone's patio in GS so great.

Personally, I think it would be better to have an active environment than some trees, but we should all understand that its very possible, even standard practice, to do both. These design plans are still in a very early stage, we'll have to keep our fingers crossed. I would imagine the designer would incorporate them somehow, or at least add some new vegetation. Time will tell.

It's amazing how few photos there are of the old plaza floating around out there.  Here are a few more from Cleveland Memory Project:

 

 

I may be in the minority but I miss the plaza at The Erieview Tower.  The Galleria architecturally blent well with the original structure.

I remember ice skating on the plaza and always marveled at the space.

The plaza was great in July. But it was horrible in January. If it had more trees and other windbreaks, it would not have been so bad. Walking north on East 9th (downhill) was actually like walking uphill because of a north/northeast wind.

Wow Downtown looked so flat then! I know they tore down a lot of buildings (in the 60s?) but wow it looks much more dense now. Also wasn't Erieview tower apart of a large project that also included the building with the Ohio Lottery in it? If it is and I remember that correctly what happened to that?

Yeah its currently at ICA Art Conservation on Detroit Ave being treated.  It is owned by the Cleveland Foundation, which I believe was part of the Porter collection that was donated and has shown up on display around town. 

 

 

Winks Bar and Grille sign proposal on East 9th. Atleast it will be removing the ugly Key West Cafe sign!

Me too (it actually has neon in it)!  The Winks sign is really generic looking.  There is another version of it that has the bottom connecting to the menu and the top rounded which looks only slightly better. 

That's an incredibly lame sign.  Looks like it's for a highway exit gas station or truck stop or something. This is the Winking Lizard Ohio beer-centric place, right? 

It's really not that bad.  I itsn't mind blowing, but nobody needs to lose any sleep over it.
