April 16, 201213 yr I've had fairly regular twitter run-ins with him recently, calling him out on incorrect facts, tirades against the city, and being a DINO (Dem in Name Only). The HamCo Dem Party needs to put out a better alternative.
April 16, 201213 yr He does deeply hate Cincinnati as it currently exists. I've met him in person and he almost seemed to amaze himself with his hatred of Cincinnati. He represents a whole group of cincinnatians that feel that "their" city has been stolen from them. For these locals of many generations of cincinnatians, cincinnati isn't a mere city, it is an ethnic homeland and they are a tribe defending their sovereignty and purity. They aren't engaged in conventional local politics in their minds, they are in a sacred struggle for their birthright. That is what is motivating him. For those who care to, he is easily provoked. I ended my 'discussion' with him by suggesting that with his name he could have a second career as a drag queen and he shook with rage as I walked away.

Here is a new headline about a possible challenge to Chris Monzel since his amendment to defund Music Hall. Landsman could challenge Monzel Democrats are trying to harness anger over the scaled-down icons tax into a serious challenge to Hamilton County Commissioner Chris Monzel this fall. Buzz has been building since Wednesday’s vote, in which Monzel and Greg Hartmann agreed to let voters decide on a 5-year, quarter-cent sales tax for Union Terminal instead of a longer-running tax for both that and Music Hall. Hartmann isn’t up for election until 2016, but Monzel, a conservative who is allied with the tea party, is up this fall. Monzel’s current Democratic opponent is Sean Feeney, a 27-year-old North College Hill resident who had raised $100 as of the June filing deadline. Greg Landsman, a 2013 Cincinnati council candidate and Strickland administration staffer, said Thursday he would consider entering if Feeney withdrew.
August 7, 201410 yr I think Monzel might be more vulnerable than we thought because he likely has done little preparation for this race. Perhaps this has been the Democrats' plan all along -- to enter Landsman at the last possible moment, so that Monzel is caught completely off-guard and suddenly has to assemble a campaign and raise a significant amount of money.

The democrats are terrible here and don't deserve the seat if they don't want to do the work from start to finish. I think Landsman should run, but I don't know if he'll win.

Still, getting someone that organizes effectively would be great, and her campaign didn't show that. They need to tap into the new progressive movement to get people excited about the dems and voting.
August 8, 201410 yr ^I agree generally, but you need someone with deep connections and a long history of politics to run the party in my opinion. I wouldn't want a fresh politician to operate the county's dem party. That's why I offered Tarbell and Qualls as suggestions. PG would do a really good job in the position, but I don't think that's where his sights are set.
August 8, 201410 yr Cindi Andrews tweeted a few minutes ago about Charlie Luken possibly entering the race. I'm not a Luken fan, but I have to admit he may have the best chance of beating Monzel. I think he's already a candidate this November for a probate judge position so I guess there'll have to be extra jockeying to get it done. Also Sean Feeney's wife posted a comment on cincinnati.com's article (about a possible candidate change) which makes it sound like her husband isn't interested in stepping aside to make way for a stronger candidate: Brittany Feeney · Follow · Works at Perfectly Posh 1) Feeney. Not finney 2) he ran opposed and won with 60% of the votes 3) Sean's minor is in poli sci. He is not new to politics and has repeatedly been blocked by Tim Burke and his minion Caleb in getting the appropriate contacts to assist in fund raising. He knows whats needs to be done to raise the funds, as landsman does, but does not have the contacts. Burke has a history of attempting to strong man candidates into doing what he wants, including having reps call candidates employers and threaten their funding if the candidate continued. Sean has as much of a chance as Landsman, if not better, with the PROPER party support. Landsman may not even decide to run. He has said he would consider it. Not that he would. There is nothing wrong with the current candidate other than the fact Burke has obviously been intimidated by him and wants him out. Everything Bill said in his first 2 paragraphs also applies to Sean. He isn't in politics for the money or ego or all the other bullshit. He's in it to make a difference. He has 3 educators in his family. He knows well what needs to be done in public education and how to do it and how to get creative if needed. Sean is not one prone to allow himself to be bullied out, which is EXACTLY what Burke is doing.

He was worse than Qualls. I'd be fine with either but I don't think they can get in there.
August 8, 201410 yr Is it possible for one of the potential candidates to file as a write-in candidate if Feeney doesn't drop out? To do that, you would need to get people really fired up. It happened at the national level in Alaska, so I figure it could happen here for County Commissioner. It might get people more energized because of the odds against him/her.

August 8, 201410 yr Luken will not fire anyone up. But he might take enough of the conservatives upset with Monzel to make the difference. I would prefer Landsman over Luken. It all depends on how the race is framed. Hopefully there is strong opposition to Monzel regardless of who is running. And I would certainly vote for Luken over Monzel.

At this point, I doubt if a progressive candidate could win any Hamilton County race. Luken would at least be a step in the right direction. He surely supports the city's/Cranley's position regarding the icons. Monzel deserves to be punished for what he did. Luken's the man who could do it.

Luken is a coast too far. We should be mindful that the next election is a "mid-term" one, with a projected strong turnout of conservative voters. That makes any Democratic candidate's chances harder.

I bet they aren't crowing as much as they have been the last couple of days (i.e., "It's Christmas in August!"). Even Monzel has felt compelled, via The Enquirer, to try to explain himself more today. He feels the heat, and I hope he gets burned in November. Do progressive Democrats believe that making the case against Luken on news websites helps? Why on earth provide succor to the enemy? Or do they want Monzel to win?

One reporter’s comment was that it would be healthier for that democracy for a more experienced candidate to take on Monzel. If that’s the case, where was that candidate eight months ago, stepping up to the plate? Two Democratic candidates stepped up, and through the democratic process one emerged the victor. That candidate is Sean Patrick Feeney, and we should rally around him now more than ever. This is the Democratic Party – we do not have placeholder candidates like the Republican Party does. As the party of inclusion, we should be welcoming every new candidate and giving them all the support we can to ensure victory up and down the ballot every November. Every office is a winnable target for a Democrat, regardless of race, gender, age or bank account. The Democratic Party Sean grew up believing in, volunteering for, and sweating for believed that a rising tide lifts all boats. They believed in the American Dream, and in the absence of deep-pocketed donors worked tireless to elect principled candidates by knocking doors and making calls. They certainly wouldn’t throw one of their own to the curb every time more moneyed citizens get the whim at the last moment that they might do better than the new guy. There’s been mention of what a hero Sean would be if he stepped aside for one of these people, who were naysayers about this race not a week ago. Personally, Sean thinks a hero is someone who stands up for the values he believes in regardless of how far current leadership has strayed. Heroes lend a helping hand and do not judge someone based on their income level. A hero doesn’t rollover in the face of wrongdoing. Sean would rather stand up for reversing the ever increasing trend of big money corrupting the American political process than be a “hero” to a party who has lost its way. Our progressive Mayoral candidate got trounced, and most of the HamCo suburbs are about as red as Butler, Clermont, and Warren counties. A candidate like Luken (or another Portune-esque figure) is our only chance at getting a Democratic majority on the commission, at least for the foreseeable future.
