So, the St. Regis in DC is what I've been picturing as a model for how the Drury should turn out, with similar architectural styles is an analogous downtown setting. I don't really feel like the canopy is that bad, in this context, and I think the sign will likely fade into the background in contrast with the presence of the actual building.

That canopy from DC is MUCH better, IMHO. Send that to the Planning Commission to remind Drury what they CAN do. Even hanging some flowers in summer or poinsettias in winter from their proposed Cleveland canopy would be a tremendous improvement.

That is more or less what was proposed the first time it went through design review. Maybe with a bit less detailing, but it's hard to tell with the early renderings. And people complained about that too.

YES, that's what I've been picturing as well.

I did some quick photoshop adjustments to the signage and canopy.  Instead of blending the canopy to the building's color, I adjusted the tones to match the existing doors patina.  As for the signage I shrunk the sign and again based the tones to the doors.  Forgive my crude adjustments.

I like the look... gosh why cant we just ask St. Regis to take this over :)

A couple more from Landmarks.

This is a massive joke!

I know I'm complaining and there is nothing I can do about it, but for the sake of a "sale" this project is horrible.

This project should be elegant, graceful, luxurious based on the location and the history of the building.  As I've said before, this should be a Penisula, Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental, Swissotel, Park Hyatt, J. W. Marriot, W=A or St. Regis not a Dreadful Plaza!

As much as I dislike this development, I hope it's successful for the overall good of Cleveland's tourism industry.

Wow, the stone cleaning makes the building really stand out. It always amazes me how much dirt and grime accumulate on the facades of buildings. The building looked so tired before.

I hope the ivy comes back.

Roof fixing or replacement going on.

have not been on the mall at nite in years....  if the buildings do not have outdoor lighting, I imagine it would be amazing....

More roof work.  Looks like a new copper roof is being added (hard to see in second image).

They're nearly wrapped up with renovating a parking garage on Rockwell, between 6th and 9th. Drury bought it a 18-24 months ago.

Forgot all about that project!

Just walked by there today. While it's still just a garage... It's a vast improvement over the crumbling original structure. They also have opened up the bottom level so it's not so imposing.  Now if they just re-pave the sidewalk when they're done it'll be fine!

Is there parking on the former top/office level?

They also have opened up the bottom level so it's not so imposing

you mean for retail?

I don't think so but I just noticed today that it was open air. They removed the walls.

^open air!? that sounds worse! I truly hope they fill that open space with something that contributes to the street life.....

I found this picture of 801 Rockwell (pre-renovation) on Loopnet. I am not sure when the photo was taken.

I'd say the renovation is a vast improvement from what it used to look like.

Not every stretch is going to be a thriving block - even if they add retail here, you have the Calfee garage immediately to the west and to the south you have the Federal Reserve Bank's loading docks. Doubtful this will become a thriving retail corridor anytime soon.

At least you'll have people walking down Rockwell to get from the Drury parking garage to the Drury hotel.

I would actually like to see a downtown car detail shop to serve both residents and office workers.  A ground floor of a parking ramp is an ideal location for something like this.

It may be my imagination but I thought it exists on 12th and Hamilton (https://www.google.com/maps/@41.506066,-81.688172,3a,75y,334.22h,84.53t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sqGZIC6eUXX61321VuewuiA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1) (google street view doesn't show it, although imagery is from '11).

There's also this one on 1900 Hamilton Ave, a bit outside downtown for some - https://www.google.com/maps/@41.508954,-81.682301,3a,75y,131.93h,79.5t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sVHGqud8mfiyKZlMulw2klQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1

Have never seen it--will have to check it out--thanks!

Yup, it's a new(ish) RadAir.  They've been pretty accommodating schedule wise the couple times I've been there.

the new copper roof is really apparent now

That is a surprise. I didn't know that was part of the renovation but I think it's going to look really cool when it's done

Is this project supposed to be complete in time for the RNC next summer?

They are advertising for employees, and say they are "set to open in Spring 2016."

Seems to me like nothing whatsoever has happened with this job over the last 6-8 weeks. Maybe it's on track and all the work is internal and out of view, but I walk or run past the site most evenings and the piles of materials never seems to diminsh and the equipment always seems in the same spot?

My hovercraft is full of eels

They're working. I can see them everyday from my office. A lot of the work has been replacing the roof with copper. I'll have to pay attention this week and see if I notice anything

When that roof is done you'll probably start to notice a lot more interior work going on.

^ Love the density from that angle!

One of my friends gets all bent out of shape when he sees tall buildings without windows on a side... that photo would bother him!

Very cool to see the progress.
