We're talking about almost 25 miles in that pic from Lakewood to Eaton in Chagrin Highlands. Even farther given the pic was taken well west of Lakewood.

Only sometimes....and once you see it you realize how crazy things like "ghost ships" and sea monsters may have gotten their origins. It's really something to witness. I have talked to Canadians that have seen Cleveland skyline and cars on the Shoreway. What weather conditions allow Northeast Ohioans to see the Canadian shoreline across Lake Erie? (video) CLEVELAND, Ohio - On special days, Northeast Ohioans at the beach can see a hazy image of land across a seemingly shrinking Lake Erie - the Canadian shoreline. But most of the time? All you see is a vast lake of blue. The strange phenomenon is due to a condition in the atmosphere called super-refraction, which bends light downward, allowing the naked eye to see far beyond the horizon. Here's how. First, let's note the Canadian shoreline is more than 50 miles away from the south shore in Ohio, so Earth's curvature prevents us from seeing anything that far away -- which is why, on most days, that northern shoreline is hidden. In order to see it, something called a temperature inversion must be in place. This is where instead of the temperature decreasing with height as you go up from the surface like on a typical day, it increases with height, inflicting density changes in the air causing sunlight to bend downward, so that far distant objects can be seen. A temperature inversion over the lake happens when the lake is still much cooler than the air above. Any air directly over the lake surface cools greatly, while the air farther above that layer remains warmer. Since warm air is less dense than cool air, the warmer air flows over the top of that shallow, cool layer, creating what meteorologists call a "cap." Light rays can bounce off that cap, reflecting back down toward the surface. That bending of the light allows us to see around the curvature of Earth, and over the horizon. https://www.cleveland.com/weather/blog/2017/08/what_weather_conditions_allow.html

August 23, 20204 yr Since 2011 doesn't qualify as historic (but it seems like a lifetime ago), I'm putting these here. Going through my archives to do some backups and came across these. August 25, 20204 yr Wow @MayDay looking at those does indeed seem like a lifetime ago and also shows how far downtown has come in a very short amount of time... one thing that definitely stood out to me... August 30, 20204 yr I'm about to do a big photo drop of my trip home earlier this month if thats okay i just gotta do some formatting. Shot on my iphone so they arent great but I love NEO so they all look like postcards to me...
August 30, 20204 yr Alright so there was a pretty nice rainbow when I got back in town Had to get over to the Ledges ASAP Convinced the neighborhood to eat in FEB so I could check out the new construction My bros Though not really captured here, apparently my friends mate from Philly was anticipating MGK's 27 Club, so word gets around which is cool. Thought the Lumen demonstrated it's extension of downtown here, and if I'm not mistaken this was near one of the potential SHW HQ sites, and now maybe one of the Justice Center sites ... Went for a walk in Brecksville Reservation for my moms bday (and admittedly to see the dam* (edit - oops) removal, pardon the slight trespassing). Additionally, I was quite blown away by the wetlands and biodiversity skirting the trail. There was a beautiful heron that escaped my concentration before I was able to snap it, as well as numerous snakes (which gave me a good scare) in the lock further along the trail. Mom showed us her old apartment and where she used to take walks with our father across the street, which now has an incredible community garden. Return to the back of my hand And finally, I went to Blue Hen Falls because it might be the epicenter of my childhood. I wish I could share the clip I have of the water reflecting on the underside of this tree like the bottom of a pool on a sunny day because it's magical but I'm inept in that regard atm so I'll just post a link. https://i.imgur.com/My3s1nX.mp4 I know it's an exurban take on NEO but I try to embrace the New England charm of Hudson and its access to CVNP when I'm there, and push against the social maladies I encounter there as well. September 4, 20204 yr I'll be posting a photo thread based on the 1,355 photos I took a few hours ago on the Goodtime III, but wanted to throw it out there. I always go on a cruise at least once a year, and finally got around to it today. For anyone looking for something to do (especially great photo opps), I highly recommend it, especially this time of year as the humidity starts to drop (crisper pics, etc.). For anybody like me who isn't taking chances - they do temperature checks before boarding, masks are required unless people are seated at their assigned areas, and as far as social distancing - I called ahead and requested a table on the top outdoor (4th deck). Imagine my surprise when my husband and I were the only ones on the top deck the. entire. time. I know it's not good for their business but I literally put in 5,000 steps going from side to side, and not one shot of the back of someone's head. I know it's a splurge and times are tough but if you need an excuse to get out on the water and snap some shots - and support a locally owned business, highly recommend. Info on their cruises for the rest of the year (apologies for all caps - copied/pasted from their site): https://goodtimeiii.com/ THE NARRATED SIGHTSEEING CRUISE WILL BE AVAILABLE ON FRIDAYS, SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS FROM 3PM-5PM THROUGH SEPTEMBER 6TH AND FROM 2PM-4PM ON FRIDAYS, SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 11TH THROUGH SEPTEMBER 27TH. WE WILL HAVE A SPECIAL 11AM-1PM NARRATED SIGHTSEEING CRUISE ON SATURDAY, 9/5. WE WILL OFFER A FAMILY-FRIENDLY SUNSET EVENING CRUISE ON THURSDAYS, FRIDAYS, SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS FROM 7PM-9PM THROUGH LABOR DAY WEEKEND, THEN ON FRIDAYS, SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS FROM 6:30PM-8:30PM BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 10TH THROUGH SEPTEMBER 27TH. RATES FOR 2020 CRUISES ARE $30.00 FOR ADULTS (12 and up) AND $15.00 FOR CHILDREN (AGES 2-11) ** clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram

The usher staff seemed to not want to do anything, and finally the waitress taking drink orders took control of the situation and made the man move to his assigned seat.
September 4, 20204 yr Sorry you experienced that - it seemed like lower decks are given corresponding seating assignments on both the indoor and outdoor spots? Not sure how things played out on other decks, but we literally had the top all to ourselves. Once away from the dock, they released each table individually to go upstairs to assigned seating on the 3rd deck. I assume you were all the way up on top of the pilot house? You just have some juice! ? Other than the staff not being very helpful initially, it was kind of funny. Even the guys' own family was fighting with him to get him to move. He was just one of those old codgers stuck in his ways (thanks Fox News!). Unfortunately, that 3rd deck of the Goodtime was a microcosm for all Americans at that point in time....

Would love to see a tunnel and it extended past East Ninth Street (although in Ohio I don't see that happening due to cost). I must say, however, riding that stretch of the Shoreway probably gives you the best skyline views of any approach into downtown.

The high-speed ferry boat from Canada actually has the best views of the skyline. It was a great vista in 2030, especially with all of the new buildings downtown. I'd love to show you the pictures, but my cell phone blanked when I returned to the present. Damned rules of time travel....
