August 25, 201410 yr Author Another good morning for a walk! The sunrise as seen from from my living room just off the Gold Coast...... Virtually all structures on Clifton in Lakewood face the street angled, including these apartment buildings. Likely due to a longstanding setback requirement. That's the original parking garage at left for these apartments on W. 117th and Lake which were built when most people didn't have cars. The lot was added later. Small house, big trees on the Cleveland side of Edgewater. Big houses coming.... House on the Cleveland side of Edgewater Drive. Wait, it gets better.... Exotic landscaping seen as I head north of Edgewater. Yes, there's a street north of Edgewater for a short distance on the Cleveland side. Amazing that so many diverse landscapes are within a 30 minute walk of my condo. Yes, we're in the City of Cleveland. This is Harborview Drive. More of the City of Cleveland, Harborview Drive. Some of Cleveland's 19th century industrialists built these homes more than 100 years ago. Today you can buy one for $500,000 or so. This one is easily over $1 million as it overlooks Lake Erie and is new construction. Two smaller homes succumbed to it. Property records and a Google search show that this property is owned by a urology specialist at the Cleveland Clinic. So if you want a house like this, learn how to help people pee better. Cul de sac of Harborview that was later extended a short distance. Colorful landscaping on Harborview in Cleveland. And we return to the lifestyles of "the rest of us" as morning rush hour traffic backs up on Lake Avenue into the city.... August 31, 201410 yr Author Clifton at Fry, Lakewood On Fry Avenue, looking north to Clifton. Fry? Fry? Fry? 'Murica. Roses on Fry, Lakewood Late 19th century home on Fry with a widow's watch and turret. Very common in Lakewood and especially in Cleveland. Getting ready for college football season! All in all, it's just another way to point to Detroit Avenue Cyclist waiting for the #26 bus on Detroit Avenue The old Fairchild Chevy dealership site at Detroit Avenue and Beach Ave in Lakewood owned by Forest City Enterprises. I believe city law requires a property to be developed within 6 months of a demolition. It's been 10 yrs. Don't the laws apply to FCE? Perhaps Forest City's vacant lot could be developed with transitional housing for new immigrants/refugees. There's lots of refugees from Nepal & Bhutan in this part of Lakewood. This is a Nepali/Bhutanese grocery store across the street from the FCE lot. The last two pics were cross-posted in the FCE thread, so if you'd like to discuss FCE's handling of this situation, that would be the better place to do it.... http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,6294.msg724208.html#msg724208 "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 1, 201410 yr Author Sorry.... I've kinda taken over this thread with my pics from my morning walks. These were from this morning's dawn stroll...... It's an early, cloudy start to a Labor Day that has since turned sunny and hot. The house in the prior photo has this elaborate landscape irrigation system that starts from its downspout. And now we head down the secret road that leads to the secret parking area for the secret apartments. Oh, there's also a secret walkway between the secret parking areas for the secret apartments. And here are the secret apartments. Anyone know where they are? Only one weak hint: they're in Lakewood.... Its early in the morning at the secret apartments with not a soul about. There's lots of apartments back here. Shhh..... Laundry is air-drying in the muggy morning breeze. Balconies serve multiple functions, in secret of course. Looking back from whence I came. Goodbye secret apartments. Until the next time, your secret is safe with me. ;) Lakewood alley, pre-dawn. So many nooks and crannies in this streetcar suburb of Cleveland. Peeking into a store at Detroit and Cove avenues that caters mostly to first-generation immigrants. Not only do they offer cheap phone plans but basic household goods and clothing. September 7, 201410 yr Author A little downtown action...... BTW, I ran into some Cleveland city staffpersons who said they haven't heard a peep about active plans for the adding the tower atop 515 Euclid. FWIW... Lunch time in the Gilded Age.... September 7, 201410 yr Author OK, back to my neck of the woods at The Edge for a Saturday morning stroll in between raindrops: Morning walk in front-porch city, also known as Lakewood. That's Idlewood Avenue. I smell bacon! Clifton Diner loves to torture me on my walks east on Clifton Boulevard. More progress on the streetscape of the Enhance Clifton bus rapid transit corridor. Not too many people getting their workout at the 24-hour Anytime Fitness at 7 am. I get my workout for free by walking 30 minutes most mornings. Yes, they're working on Enhance Clifton at 7 am on a Saturday. Trying to get as much done before winter. They still have to add a landscaped median. Out enjoying the morning architecture, er, air. Smells very clean after a night of storms. More morning architecture ...and air. Businesses and signs (and tags) in a neighborhood often tell alot about a neighborhood. Enjoy the flowers and greenery while you still can. Of course I say this one day after it was in the low-90s. Today it will be in the low-70s. Long walk still ahead. Lake Avenue apartments in Cleveland, some of nicest in the city outside of downtown. More Lake Avenue apartments, including their cozy and ornate entrances. These were built in the 1920s when Spanish design was all the rage in America. Don't know how much longer she'll be standing but it won't be long. The old Fifth Church of Christ Scientist at Lake and West 117th Street will be deconstructed into a park and luxury townhomes. They sold out so fast the developer is building more nearby. September 8, 201410 yr Author This morning in Lakewood..... Dawn along the NS tracks. Beautiful, cool morning except for the guy walking ahead of me smoking a cigar. Wake up people! Its Monday! (picture looks better in a darkened room) Sunrise over Detroit Avenue, Lakewood. When you get out early, you see new things -- like the group of 6-10 Nepali/Bhutanese immigrants waiting on Detroit Avenue for the #26 bus into Cleveland. To get a foothold in America, it seems you have to get going quite early in the day. I just really liked this view and lighting for some reason. Brick apartment blocks are everywhere in Lakewood. September 11, 201410 yr Author Hoofing it again.... Light traffic on Clifton at 6:30 am. Lights coming on in Lakewood apartments, people starting to stir, it's almost the weekend! Time to pay a visit to the Gold Coast again, another area within a 30 minute walk of my home. More people in apartments stirring awake to start the day. A little bit of European influence in the architecture in many buildings in Cleveland and Lakewood. People built what they knew. Entrance to the Shore House apartments on Edgewater Drive, Lakewood's Gold Coast. Lake Erie is on the other side of the street behind me. More nooks and crannies. Love the mysterious lighting too. Passengers wait for the #55 to downtown Cleveland. Most #55's stay on Clifton but every 20 minutes during rush hour, a bus is routed via the Gold Coast. Lake Erie is behind the buildings to the right. This was built in 1912 as a residential hotel but became disreputable in recent decades. It was bought by the city and sold to become the Optimal Wellness Center with a Good & Raw health food store. Just 30 minutes later than my first photo I shared from this morning's walk, traffic on Clifton has gotten quite a bit busier! September 11, 201410 yr I love your pictures KJP. They have a sense of 'realness' to them, seeing the everyday life rather than just the typical glamour shots. Is this the predecessor to HOC (Humans of Cleveland)?

September 16, 201410 yr Author Foggy, chilly morning along Clifton. Love it! Artsy, fartsy #55 bus. This year-round lighting works especially well for Halloween. Hope we don't need the services of the fire brigade today, but someone will. This station probably goes on a dozen calls a day as 20,000 people live within a square mile. Not enough lights on at 6:45 am.... WAKE UP PEOPLE! Emerson Middle School, all lit up and pretty in the predawn mist. One of the #55's briefly leaving Clifton at Nicholson for the next mile to serve the Gold Coast. This is also one of the few bends along an otherwise straight Clifton Boulevard. Lots of smaller brick apartment buildings along Clifton, all looking pretty solid considering their 90th birthdays have either passed or are near. Towering trees in moody dawn lighting. Quintessential Clifton -- at least at Lakewood's east end and into Cleveland. One thing I learned from my grandpa's cousin's biography: the predominantly Polish Catholic schools of that era were bilingual. They taught classes in Polish instead of just teaching English. However, there was never any question of whether or not it was important to also learn English.
