February 2, 201510 yr I'm not sure if there is a more fitting thread, but I was looking at some old photos on my hard drive and I knew that you guys would enjoy this. I snapped it a few years ago at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. As an eastsider, I can identify the Italian and Hebrew. :D Anyone know the other languages? I'm assuming Slovenian, Croatian, and other Eastern European varieties. Neat bit of history! My Italian grandparents skipped right past NYC with the allure of plentiful jobs in Pittsburgh, I'd like to know if they were swayed by a similar poster. From there they followed job recruitment into Ohio, and settled in Wooster's Little Italy.
February 2, 201510 yr Author Some of the major industries especially those city-sized steel mills in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Chicago, etc. had hiring reps on the docks at East Coast ports and bought blocks of seats on trains to send them to their destinations. Entire neighborhoods were built by these industries, including stores, parks, police stations, fire stations and libraries. That's how hard-up they were for labor! My Italian grandparents skipped right past NYC with the allure of plentiful jobs in Pittsburgh, I'd like to know if they were swayed by a similar poster. From there they followed job recruitment into Ohio, and settled in Wooster's Little Italy. This poster looks more like something the BOE put up locally, perhaps in the mills, to encourage immigrants into adult education programs. There was also an awareness that many of them did not intend to stay here. For example, many Poles, including my great grandparents and my grandmother, returned to Poland after it became a nation again. Assimilation meant keeping experienced workers. Most of the later immigrants went where they already had family.

September 23, 20159 yr Author FYI: Hello folks! Since most of you are avid followers of the Hilton Cleveland Downtown, I need your help. As you may know the hotel is trying to do a special art piece which will be located in the lower lobby that connects the hotel to the convention center. It is a photo mosaic mural using photos submitted by Clevelanders. The mosaic mural is hoped to be quite large so when you come to visit the hotel you can find your image as a permanent part of the building. We are woefully short on submissions. We just created a hashtag #myclephoto where you can post your pictures (as many as you want) or you can go to myclevelandphoto.com to submit. There will be a drawing where someone can win a weekend stay at the hotel. Please spread the word. We need about 2000 more images to make a big mural. Thanks! October 13, 20159 yr Author A few random pics from the last few days... Cleveland firefighters playing with their hoses aboard the fireboat docked at Station 21. Actually, it was a test. Replacing crossings in the Flats on the Waterfront portion of the Blue/Green light-rail lines. Too bad the rail lines don't have many more years left to run. Construction progressing on the new Public Square, Cleveland. East 9th Street at Prospect Avenue, downtown. Love the big windows at the county HQ. This pic doesn't do the cityscape panorama justice. Not even close... And a few from MayDay's perch from the parking deck at 9th and Prospect. October 26, 20159 yr Being that it was a gorgeous day here on the North Coast, I decided to take the day in at the Metroparks. I covered about half of the Emerald Necklace from the north end of Rocky River all the way down to Bedford via the CVNP. Here are a few pictures from today: View looking north from the Groth Memorial & Scenic Overlook The CVSR at Brecksville Station I have long been wanting to go to the old Tinkers Creek (aka Terra Vista) Cemetery. It is the burial ground of the earliest settlers of the Tinkers Creek area. I believe the oldest burial is from 1807. It's also supposed to be very haunted. It was kind of creepy being there as it is at the top of a hill and I was the only one up there. I can only imagine how creepy it'd be to be up there at night. View from the Tinkers Creek Gorge overlook at Bedford Reservation I had never been to Viaduct Park in Bedford until last year, but it's a really cool place And finally made my way back to the city

November 9, 20159 yr Being that it was a gorgeous day here on the North Coast, I decided to take the day in at the Metroparks. I covered about half of the Emerald Necklace from the north end of Rocky River all the way down to Bedford via the CVNP. Here are a few pictures from today: Missed this the first time.....a couple of my daughters favorite spots in here. The 82 bridge is "the big bridge" and Viaduct is "the little bridge". I finally let her walk down that path you show, one of the railings is missing. I was really unamused by that graffiti and much less amused that the little f-stains tagged the historical signs as well.
November 28, 20159 yr Author This was posted on Facebook... Glenn Petranek / Pixel Mania Mania took this photo of downtown Cleveland on Thanksgiving Eve 2015. November 29, 20159 yr Author A few from last night's Winterfest which was held at Tower City Center (shows for families) and Playhouse Square (tree lighting and concert) as photographed by others... WP_20151128_003 by Ken Prendergast, on Flickr Oh, there was also a Cavs game last night. Traffic downtown was incredible. I loved it! The ex-Huntington Building served Winterfest too as the venue for Wine & Ale Fest! Looks like a few people showed up. I like the multi-site, multi-venue concept of Winterfest, rather than just having it on Public Square -- which its renovation forced. I hope they continue it after the square renovations are done... December 28, 20159 yr Author From Doug Nagy.... It's easy to confuse this for a 700-year-old cathedral somewhere in Europe. But it's the 125-year-old St. Stanislaus church in Cleveland's Slavic Village. But the craftsmanship is very similar, handed down through the generations: From Don Iannone....
