November 30, 20177 yr I know this ship has sailed and this topic has been discussed to death, but that image really shows how damaging the road through the square is. It's more like two public rectangles than one cohesive public square. Agreed. Cutting Superior Avenue through Public Square ruined the whole cohesive ambiance.
December 1, 20177 yr Author D I know this ship has sailed and this topic has been discussed to death, but that image really shows how damaging the road through the square is. It's more like two public rectangles than one cohesive public square. Don't you dare say that to Cleveland Scene!!! Don't you know that road saves 3 minutes and 27 seconds on bus-riders commutes??!!! Not correct. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
December 1, 20177 yr I just walked through the square last night (before the shooting!) and was thinking about what was being said above. Having Superior bus traffic ramming through the square just takes so much away from the feel. The reasons for and against just seem so lopsided...but as stated, that ship has sailed. Rant ended, no need to prune.

December 1, 20177 yr I wish the ice rink rental shipping containers were not an afterthought when the renovation of Public Square happened. I would have loved to have seen the cafe design to have had a multi-purpose element for skate rentals in the winter and towels for when the fountain is in use.

December 2, 20177 yr ^like the middle shot. there are people on the streets! That's because it was taken at 2pm haha.
December 2, 20177 yr Author There are people in both of my Playhouse Square shots which were taken seconds apart. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
December 3, 20177 yr ^true. but I liked the second shot, because it had people AND the an interesting background. (didn't like it solely because there were people in it.)
December 3, 20177 yr Author I just realized I took a portrait style photo looking East because there's nothing interesting across the street to include in the photograph. Isn't that the old Howard Johnson hotel off to the left?
January 5, 20187 yr Nope, that's Bratenahl Place in the mid-ground, so I'm thinking it's Euclid Beach.
February 13, 20187 yr Love that shot of Lakewood. I was procrastinating at work the other day by looking at Google satellite images of Ohio, and I was really taken aback by the residential density of Lakewood. I had heard it has the highest population density in the state, and maybe even between Chicago and Philly, but I assumed that was mostly due to the lakefront high rise cluster where my sister lives. I didn't realize how large an area there was of nearly uninterrupted dense detached housing south of there. While it looks completely different at street level, the development pattern looks kind of similar to what one might find in Los Angeles. I tried to find a comparable area in Cincinnati, and while there are pockets that appear somewhat similar in the Evanston/Norwood area, the topography just doesn't allow for a Lakewood type of situation to occur.

There's give and takes to the topography issue. For example, Pittsburgh's skyline is dense like Chicago or NY's, but in an extremely confined space, the topography necessitated that. Not great for volume in inner city neighborhoods though, as you note.
February 13, 20187 yr Lakewood is also a nice case study in how "density" (note the suburbanite scare quotes) doesn't necessarily mean Manhattan, or even OTR, in terms of built environment. You can live in a reasonably dense, reasonably walkable neighborhood or city and still have a single-family detached house, a small yard, and a garage. “To an Ohio resident - wherever he lives - some other part of his state seems unreal.”

Not great for volume in inner city neighborhoods though, as you note. Yeah, the obvious example in Ohio is OTR. If Cincinnati was flat, there's no way OTR and the other basin neighborhoods would have been built at the density they were. Many Cincinnati neighborhoods were similarly influenced by topography. Mt. Adams is super dense, but it truly exists as an urban island due to its hilltop location. Hills often create scenarios where you have spikey density.
February 14, 20187 yr Author I take LOTS of photos during my 30-minute walks each day in Lakewood and Cleveland's Edgewater/Cudell neighborhood and post them on Facebook. I love my affordable, dynamic, diverse, 24-hour, walkable, transit-accessible neighborhood. I'd love it even more if Canada annexed it! Here is a sampling from just 2018.... February 14, 20187 yr I always found it to be a weird experience to ride directly next to the Hilliard Road bridge no I-90 but be 15 feet below it. Great photos of a great neighborhood(s)! “To an Ohio resident - wherever he lives - some other part of his state seems unreal.”

February 20, 20187 yr KJP, I love that picture! The placement of downtown looks off though. Seems like it should be on the left hand side of the shot. Based on the image the red line would almost have to do a full u-turn.

February 20, 20187 yr Author ^I have a friend who firmly contends that the only skyscrapers built in Cleveland beyond 2020 will be in Uptown. Points to the density, ridership, and innovation of that area as his reasons Hard to disagree with. The rate of job increases and population growth in that area could result in totals that eclipse those of downtown Cleveland in a decade or less. It's already the 4th largest employment center in the state. Too bad it's difficult to get to by car or transit from many areas to the northeast, east and southeast. If only we had about $1.2 billion to extend the Red Line to Euclid and the Blue Line from Shaker Square to University Circle. Vehicular access via freeways would be limited which would force even greater density around transit lines in the area (minus the OC).
February 20, 20187 yr I honestly didn't recognize Cleveland in that Mayfield photo at first glance. That hasn't happened in about 15 years for me. Great pic.

February 25, 20187 yr Author Cars and high-density development don't mix. Cars are typically single-occupant, needs lots of space to move around quickly and to park, and therefore decidedly low-density. The transit access to UC from the west is very good. It will be better soon from the south and north once the Thrive 105-93 corridor is upgraded. June 14, 20186 yr I really like the new landscaping. It brings back memories of seeing old postcards of Edgewater where every square inch of the park just looks so well-manicured. Also it's always strange to see dying/dried out grass right next to the largest supply of fresh water in North America lol.
June 14, 20186 yr Is the dried-out grass where they have overflow parking? I think so. It does look like they're trying to do a better job taking care of it.
