Hey Everyone,

 

I'll be moving to Cleveland for the summer as I'll be working as a summer associate at a law firm downtown. I'm a 23 year old single male, and I'm looking to rent a 1BR unit from May - August. Where is a nice area to live? I was told to look at the Tremont Place Lofts, but I'd love to hear other suggestions. As I said, I'd like to live in a neighbor that has a lot to do, is close to downtown, and is also safe.

Temporary?  I would live in Ohio City for three months.  You can have a blast there.  Bike to work.  Great food.  Great beer.  Case Closed (no pun intended, Mr. JD).

I forgot to mention that I need a place that is fully furnished.

Your biggest challenge might be finding temporary living arrangements.  Most places want a 1 year lease.  I believe Tremont Place Lofts is an exception and would be a great choice.  Reserve Square maybe?  You should ask your firm's HR department for suggestions of where summar clerks have lived in past years.

 

Just remember, as a summer cleark, that is as nice as you will be treated in your career until you make partner.  Enjoy it while it lasts!

Temporary furnished for that period may be difficult.

 

If you're coming for such a short time I would think the HR department could also give leads on city proper furnished rentals.  Have you asked if they have corporate housing?

I think Cleveland State University has brand new furnished apartments.  Its on-campus living but its under a year old.  I had a friend live there last year and enjoyed it.

TPL is probably nicer and newer.  But RS is actually in downtown and very close to nearly all of the big firms.  Your price range should give you plenty of options and I would actually recommend lowering it.  There is no reason why you shouldn't be able to find a real decent place for under $1000/mo

Welcome ag4uh!  Unfortunately, nearly all of Cleveland's furnished corporate housing is located in the exurbs so won't be a good fit.  As others have said, your best bet is probably finding a sublet on craigslist or Tremont Place Lofts.  Tremont would be a great place to live for the summer; a very nice bike ride or easy bus ride to work (and easy drive too), plus great bars and restaurants all over the place.  The only down side is no good grocery store in the immediate area, but if you'll have a car that won't be a limitation.

 

In addition to Cleveland State, you might contact Case Western Reserve University to see if they make and grad student housing available to non-affiliates. It's not downtown, but is in a great neighborhood just a few miles away.  I know grad student housing is a popular choice for summer associates in other cities. http://studentaffairs.case.edu/living/housing/

 

One more option might be the Alcazar Hotel, which is in the [great] Cedar Fairmount neighborhood of Cleveland Heights.  It has some bars and restuarants right there, a nice grocery store, and would be a 20 min drive to work, or even a very easy train ride, if you don't mind a little bit of a walk to start and end your day: http://www.thealcazar.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=51&Itemid=50

How nice is the area surrounding the Tremont Place Lofts? I've been getting mixed reviews as to the safeness of Tremont in its entirety. I do, however, really like the units (based on the pictures I've seen).

For an urban area, Tremont is safe..... especially the area immediately around TPL.  Not sure where your mixed reviews are coming from, but keep in mind that here in Cleveland (like any major metro I'm sure) there are plenty of folks who are scared of their own shadow and only venture out of their exurban bubble because they need to make a living somehow.  We wouldn't recommend any unsafe areas to newcomers.

Thanks for all of the information! One last question, I promise, lol. I looked on craigslist and found a unit in the Murry Hill Condos - any information on this building and/or Little Italy? The unit looks really nice.

Is that the building on Random Road?

 

Murray Hill is a street that runs through Little Italy and is also used sometimes as a generic name for the neighborhood in general. 

 

IMO, Little Italy has the best summer scene in the City (probably the state) right now.  It is hopping, for sure.

Yes, the building on Random Road. That sounds pretty appealing. Also, the rent here is much MUCH cheaper than TPL.

ag4uh:  As someone who was in your shoes not too long ago I strongly urge you to come to Cleveland for a couple of days and hang out in the neighborhoods (ohio city, tremont, little italy, downtown) to get a feel each neighborhood.  Obviously price should be taken into consideration but you may feel more "at home" in a certain neighborhood.

^I generally agree with you, but for a summer rental, the stakes are a lot lower than for most rellocating folks.

 

ag4uh, the Murray Hill condos would be an awesome location.  In case it appeals to you, you would have a very easy "subway" (we call our trains the "rapid") ride to work so wouldn't have to deal with downtown parking at all. Great restaurants right there and easy walk to a lot of great places.  If that unit looks nice, I'd definitely give a good look.

You can't go wrong either way.  In LI, you are a stone's throw from either University Circle or Cleveland Heights (Coventry, Cedar Fairmount, and Cedar Lee).  In Tremont, you won't be far from Downtown and Ohio City.  I might give LI an advantage because if an out of towner asked me how to walk between those neighborhoods I just mentioned, I would have more (but not a lot) concerns sending them Tremont to downtown or Tremont to OC

 

In addition to what Strap said, there is also a state of the art BRT (bus-rapid transit) which runs straight down Euclid Ave (with several stops within a very short walk from Little Italy) and may offer a better drop off point for your office than the train.

agree with everything Hts said.  I'd imagine there'll be a few more people your age in Little Italy as compared to Tremont as well as it is closer to Case, Coventry, etc.

Not sure if it's been posted on UO yet, but ODOT is going to be working on the Abbey Ave. bridge over the next four months, which is going to make biking from Tremont to downtown a real pain.

I agree with everything Hts121 just said. Little Italy seems like a better fit for you, if you find a unit that you like. You also have a higher density rate and better connectivity to other great neighborhoods in Little Italy compared to Tremont. With greater walkability, lower crime, higher connectivity, and easy access to the red line and the healthline, I think Little Italy is the best fit for you!

I'm late to this thread, but I also recommend Reserve Square. You can walk to/from work.

 

I also work at a downtown law firm (and know you're not coming to mine, as we haven't hired any summers in a few years), so welcome from a sort of colleague (I work in marketing) and enjoy the clerkship.

There are a few forumers who live there.  Everyone I know who has rented on of those units loves the place.  Its in the Warehouse District, probably not too far from where you will be working.  Definitely within walking distance
