Posted January 24, 200619 yr http://columbus.bizjournals.com/columbus/stories/2006/01/23/daily14.html Business First of Columbus - 2:40 PM EST Tuesday Film commission trying to put Columbus 'on location' Columbus has launched an effort to entice Hollywood movie moguls to shoot their films in Ohio's capital city. The Greater Columbus Film Commission Jan. 23 unveiled a Web site, www.filmcolumbus.com, to market the city to the film and video industry.
January 24, 200619 yr They're definitely worth it. Cleveland's film commission has been pretty successful at luring movie, TV shows and commercials producers here. And, it's pretty cost-effective. They persuaded a feature movie production last year to film in Cleveland instead of Detroit (even though the plot was set in Detroit) and netted a $2 million economic impact from it. And that was for just two weeks of filming here! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
October 14, 200915 yr The Room is Coming to The Drexel By Walker | October 10, 2009 4:00pm | Filed under Events, Film | 12 Comments The title of “worst film of all time” might be a bit subjective depending on your personal taste, but The Room is quickly claiming that moniker from all who have witnessed it. This 2003 indie release will be making its first Columbus big screen appearance next weekend at The Drexel on October 16 & 17 for special midnight screenings, followed by a 9:30pm showing on Sunday, October 18. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Drexel.net.
October 14, 200915 yr ^Awesome! They have monthly showings here in LA where the director/main actor/producer...etc speaks to the theater before the show. They always sell out the whole theater complex here (6 theaters), so it has a bit of a cult following here lol.
November 17, 200915 yr Greater Ohio to host the Columbus International Film Festival screening of The New Metropolis. Greater Ohio would like to invite those who share in our interest in revitalizing core urban areas and first ring suburbs to join us for the screening of The New Metropolis and subsequent panel discussion. The screening will take place on Tuesday, November 24 at 7:30pm at the Drexel Theater, located at 2254 E. Main St. Bexley. Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion moderated b Lavea Brachman, Co-director, Greater Ohio and Non-resident senior fellow, Brookings Institute. Ohio's First Suburbs are highlighted in "The New Metropolis", a groundbreaking two-part documentary on the rise, fall and revitalization of America's first suburbs. Produced by award-winning filmmaker Andrea Torrice, this is a first public examination devoted to the issues facing many suburban towns. Considering embodiments of the American dream, the first suburbs blossomed after WW2, bolstered by economic prosperity and government support. Now, many struggle with the same challenges as urban centers-- growing poverty, white flight, crumbling infrastructure, abandonment, and the continual lure of newer communities further from the cities. The two 25 minute films are broken down as follows: Episode 1: " A Crack in the Pavement", narrated by actor Peter Coyote, follows the story of two Cincinnati area public officials and their efforts to keep their towns stable and healthy despite difficult times to repair and improve infrastructure and lure businesses. Episode 2: "The New Neighbors," narrated by actress Ruby Dee, focuses on two ordinary people, one black and one white, who made racial integration the centerpiece of revitalizing Pennauken, New Jersey. The panel discussion will focus on the effects that sprawl has on first ring suburbs and what communities are going to address these issues in Ohio. The panel will consist of the following people: Lavea Brachman, Greater Ohio, Moderator Andrea Torrice, Torrice Productions and Director of The New Metropolis Kim Gibson, former Director of the First Ring suburbs Consortium of Ohio and interviewed in Crack in the Pavement Ginny Barney, Upper Arlingon City Manager For information about The New Metropolis, visit www.thenewmetropolis.com or contact Torrice Productions at 513-751-7050. If you have any questions about this special presentation, contact us directly at 614-258-6200. We hope that you will spread the word and join us for this exciting evening!
November 25, 200915 yr I just got back... Did anyone here go? I always wonder if someone from UO is at an urban affairs-oriented thing that I'm at. It sucked going by myself. I just remembered it at the last minute. The movie was alright but the discussion after the movie was much more stimulating. Lots of questions from the audience to the panel and pretty much everyone stuck around after the movie. It was shocking, how passionate some of the people spoke about sprawl, rail, diversity, public school districts...even the casino Columbus generally doesn't want but is forced to have! Folks on here think Columbusites are passive citizens but if you were there, you would have found that the inverse is true!
November 25, 200915 yr I went, but it was completely sold out, by the time I got there. I'd say they probably turned away a couple dozen folks. I considered staying for the discussion, but had others I could have done. I've seen the documentaries on TV already. Sad that I missed a rockin' debate.
November 25, 200915 yr Wow, a couple dozen? That sucks. I don't think they anticipated that many people. I got there like 20 minutes before showtime and hardly anyone was there but like 5 minutes before showtime people were just pouring in like crazy.
November 25, 200915 yr The folks working the door were pretty flabbergasted at the number of folks that showed up.

December 31, 20159 yr Arnold Schwarzenegger in Columbus filming revenge drama By Tim Feran, The Columbus Dispatch Friday, December 18, 2015 - 2:37 PM Arnold Schwarzenegger is in town a few months in advance of the annual Arnold Sports Festival. One of his other vocations -- acting -- brought him to Columbus today, filming the revenge drama 478. While the film’s publicist would not confirm the location, the production was filming in the Ohio State campus area, an observer reported. ( . . . ) The movie, which has a budget of $10.5 million, was slated to begin shooting on Dec. 6 in Columbus, for an estimated 25 days, according to the Greater Columbus Film Commission. January 21, 20169 yr Came across this May 2015 article about the opening of a film post-production facility in downtown: Movie post-production facility to open Downtown Project is effort of CCAD, Ohio Film Group aimed at keeping talent in Columbus By Tim Feran, The Columbus Dispatch Thursday, May 7, 2015 - 1:18 AM Starting this summer (2015), filmmakers will be able to look to Columbus for editing, visual effects, animation and other post-production work, the result of a partnership announced yesterday between Columbus College of Art & Design and the Ohio Film Group. The two organizations plan to open a state-of-the-art post-production facility in Columbus, to be operated under the Ohio Film Group name. It will offer services hard to find in central Ohio, while helping to stem the brain drain of talent that previously went to the West Coast to find jobs in those specialties. The Ohio Film Group will renovate a building at 380 E. Broad St., next door to the CCAD MindMarket, to create the 7,000-square-foot post-production, visual effects and animation studio. The Ohio Film Group will fund the $2 million project, which is tentatively expected to be complete on July 1 (2015). February 15, 20169 yr Jesse Owens biopic "Race" opens nationwide this Friday. But the Ohio State University is having a special advanced screening of the movie tonight: http://thelantern.com/2016/02/osu-set-to-honor-jesse-owens-with-special-advanced-screening-of-race/ Prior to becoming world-famous in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Owens attended Ohio State from 1933 to 1936 and was on their track team. In 1935, Owens had "the greatest hour in track history" when during a Big Ten meet at Ann Arbor he set three world records (220-yd sprint, 220-yd low hurdles, long jump) and tied a fourth (100-yd dash) within a span of 45 minutes! Below is the trailer for "Race". Despite part of movie focusing on his time with Ohio State, the movie wasn't shot in Columbus. Mostly because the Ohio Stadium of today looks different from the Ohio Stadium of the 1930's, where OSU's track meets were held then. Instead, the movie was shot in Montreal. In the trailer it looks like there's an on-location stand-in for inside Ohio Stadium (possibly digitally enhanced) from 0:54 to 1:04. And there's a one-second glimpse of a beautiful digital exterior re-creation of Ohio Stadium circa 1936 at the 1:22 mark.

April 30, 20169 yr ^ After seeing the plot summaries and reviews posted over at CU - http://www.columbusunderground.com/forums/topic/john-travolta/page/5/#post-1124217 - the direct-to-video route of "I Am Wrath" seems wise! Still, it's kinda fun to see the way "real Columbus" gets transformed into "movie Columbus" in 'I Am Wrath'. Here's the main trailer that features exteriors and interiors of The Statehouse; the Statehouse underground parking garage in a murder scene; the 'Old Familiar Barber Shop' interior in a fight scene; and a Short North gay dance club, 'Axis', filmed as a straight gentleman’s club(!):
April 30, 20169 yr These "I Am Wrath" clips are even better for "movie Columbus" transformations. Buckeye Donuts (S. High location - not campus) is obvious at the beginning of this clip where Travolta chats with co-star Christopher Meloni of 'Law & Order: SVU' fame: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfs0sUim2Zo Less obvious is the upscale Short North filmed as "the bad neighborhood" - with the lighted arches being the giveaway. But check out the Short North UDF at 0:10 (which may not around too much longer because of a redevelopment proposal). At 0:19 they show "the bad guys" hanging out in front of the former Buckeye Bank building on Gay Street, which is now a Marriott Hotel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhKI7zTFv9M

The pair will be fundraising for their third season Monday night at Gateway Film Center with a screening of three locally made shorts. December 7, 20168 yr At 10PM tonight on HGTV, a Central Ohio couple will be featured on the network's 'House Hunters' program. It's both a real and staged house search for a real-life couple (aka "reality TV"). It's also the fifth Central Ohio couple to be featured on the long-running show: Relocated Ohio couple to share their search on HGTV's 'House Hunters' By Jim Weiker, The Columbus Dispatch Monday, December 5, 2016 - 1:31 PM When Megan and Richard Charney learned that they would appear on the HGTV series’ "House Hunters," they had a good idea of what to expect. After all, they had both worked in television in Los Angeles before moving to Ohio last year. They knew that the show is staged, that it would take days for a crew to film a 30-minute segment and that the episode might not air for months. On Wednesday night, they will learn the results: The program documenting their home-buying decision is scheduled to be shown. (. . . ) Ohio wasn’t foreign to the couple, both 29. Megan grew up near Dayton and graduated from Ohio State University; Richard grew up in Pittsburgh and graduated from Ohio University. In the spring of 2015, they returned to Ohio to start a family. While renting an apartment, Megan’s friend Karleya Chard, an agent with Cutler Real Estate in Upper Arlington, showed them homes. The Charneys had found a four-bedroom, two-story home in Hilliard they loved, but the "House Hunters" formula required them to explore two other homes during the show. Chard arranged for them to also visit homes in the Clintonville neighborhood and Westerville. April 7, 20178 yr Expanded 'Songs at the Center' showcases local music talent By Julia Oller, The Columbus Dispatch Updated: January 28, 2017 at 10:07 AM When Eric Gnezda and Jack FitzGerald originally shared with TV station managers their vision of a musical segment based in Columbus but aired nationally, they were met with shrugs of indifference. Two years later, their pet project is being welcomed with wide-open arms. "Songs at the Center," a half-hour program on PBS, features both local and national singer-songwriters playing short sets in front of a live audience at the McConnell Arts Center in Worthington. In its short history — the final season-three taping is scheduled for tonight — the show has expanded its exposure from a single station (local affiliate WOSU-TV) to 147 stations nationwide. Gnezda and FitzGerald have even had offers to uproot "Songs at the Center" from its central Ohio home. “Eric is determined to keep it in Columbus as long as possible — forever, hopefully," said FitzGerald, 67, the program’s executive producer.
