Architecture of Density

January 6 - February 26, 2005

Reception for the Artist:

Thursday, February 3rd, 5:30 - 7:30 PM

ROBERT KOCH GALLERY (san francisco) is pleased to present Architecture of Density, an exhibition of large scale color photographs by Michael Wolf. Wolf has lived and worked in Hong Kong for ten years. Stimulated by the region's complex urban dynamics, he makes dizzying photographs of its architecture.

One of the most densely populated metropolitan areas in the world, Hong Kong has an overall density of nearly 6,700 people per square kilometer. The majority of its citizens live in flats in high-rise buildings. In Architecture of Density, Wolf investigates these vibrant city blocks, finding a mesmerizing abstraction in the buildings' facades.

****plenty more photos from where those came from on the link. i like the slideshow setup -- you just click on the first photo, then all you do is keep cliking the photo over and over. its better than drugs so do it!:

First one looks like Kowloon

Ugh that doesn't even look good. I think condo towers are great but that looks like something out of Minority Report.

Incredible density, but not somewhere I'd wanna live.

Fascinating to look at.  I agree with the above two comments, though.

Last year or so I saw in a design mag, a guy who had completely remodeled the interior of one of these apartments (I think it was in Dwell).  They are about 400 square foot typically, with one window each.

^oh no jimmy you think thats tight quarters? well we have 450sf with two of us & a cat - lol! fwiw we do have five windows, but the view is looking across at the neighbors - ha.

i find that photo thread mesmerizing to flip thru. i would love to see the show and the shots all blown up on the wall in the gallery.
