So I just returned from Pittsburgh. Had a great time! The area pittsburgh is located in is incredible, and definitly different from what im used to...flat!

Pittsburgh had some amazing things, thats hard not to be jealous of, but it also made me appreciate certain aspects of Cleveland even more.

Pittsburgh:

  • Although a geographically smaller downtown than Cleveland, pittsburgh has a much larger feel, due to thinner, criss crossing streets.
  • Mount Washington was an awesome sight from downtown, seeing the houses, apartments, churches, and restaurants above. Its also provided amazing views of downtown.
  • Their subway was great! Got us around quick and for free(even though we had free passes). Their stations and trains were very clean, in great shape, and we never had to wait longer than 2 minutes which was a nice change...;). A very nice transit experience, sorry RTA... but tt was far nicer and smoother than ours
  • There seemed to be more foot traffic, and downtown as a whole seemed to stay alive longer than in Cleveland
  • I saw alot more tourists than I do here. They definitly added to the evening crowds, used the subway, and were up on Mount Washington via the inclines.
  • Oh, and the subway had great ridership everytime we went on.
  • A double decker bus tour is better than a trolley tour. The view from the top deck is a great perspective, one that cannot be seen in a roof inclosed vehicle
  • Carson street...nothing like that here
  • Awesome rivers and bridges of course
  • I love the thin streets, compared to the large wide avenues here
  • Architecture, and amount of it
  • No extremely large parking lots in the middle of downtown
  • Market Square was nice

Im not going to list everything that makes Cleveland great, but I will mention certain things that stood out.

Cleveland:

  •
  • Cleveland has a much cleaner downtown, with less decay and grit
  • University Circle blows away their University/Museum area
  • I appreciate our anti cigarette laws at restaurants even more. We have way less cigarettes on the ground and outside our patios.
  • We have less abandoned/decaying buildings downtown. But then again, possibly losed to parking lots, while theirs still sit waiting for redevelopment
  • Pittsburgh had more "interesting" or "strange" people walking around, but we never saw or encountered any homeless or panhandlers which was nice.
  • Our arcades and tower city are definitely something interesting that I didn't see in Pittsburgh
  • West Side Market destroys anything they had over there.
  • We dont have a furry convention. If you dont know what that is, you will after I post pictures. lol
  • We have a better downtown food scene]

I will try to add some more later. Being in pittsburgh gives me hope and ideas for many things that Cleveland can do to become even greater. I will add picture later tonight or possibly tomorrow. Was a great trip, and would recommend it to anybody who hasnt been there before, or in awhile.

:wtf:

That's why need some kind of High speed rail between the cities, ( includes stops in the Mahoning Valley), so we can enjoy each city. No driving.

there needs to be passenger rail running between cleveland and pittsburgh, even if it not high speed rail. i would be perfectly fine with multiple trains running daily at an average of 60-70 MPH. i am planning on taking a trip to pittsburgh sometime this year but for someone that is car free it isnt very practical. the cap limited leaves after 1 AM and gets into pittsburgh around 430 AM so you are basically stranded in pittsburgh for a few hours in the middle of nite. i will probably end up taking megabus.

pittsburgh just feels like a real urban city compared to cleveland

Very nice photos! Also agree regarding the rail comments. There's no reason why Cleveland and Pittsburgh, given their proximity to each other, shouldn't be better connected by rail running through Youngstown. All three cities would benefit immensely from it and not simply by having an alternate method of inter-city transportation available. A rail line would also encourage more tourism and stronger economic associations between these three cities.

On a related note, one thing I really liked about Pittsburgh during each of my travels there is how walkable the central city is, from Downtown, to Oakland, to the Strip District. For one trip I even left my car at home, took the Megabus and backpacked it. It was an all around rich and enjoyable experience. Cleveland has come quite a ways over the past decade, but could definitely still learn much from Pittsburgh in this particular regard.

We drove there but didnt see our car again until the moment we left. We never needed it.

Great photos!
