New Mural?  Halle Building Garage - West Wall

If you install the free app "FRONT: Canvas City" (for Apple phones and tablets, available in Apple's app store) it will show you the murals planned as part of the FRONT triennial exhibit for the east and west walls of the Halle Building as well as other FRONT-associated murals around town.

Does anyone know what used to be in this retail space?  Isn't this the comedy club building?

It was that failed steak house for a little over a year, 811 or something?

^Which inhabited the failed comedy club building.

^ Did the comedy club ever exist there? I know the space was built for one but I'm not sure it ever opened.

I miss the Standard.

^^Correct. Someone spent a lot of money building that thing for a particular comedy club (which produced an awful building), but the club never moved in. It's been a very nice improvement to see the building opened up a bit for restaurant/bar tenants.

I miss the Standard.

For those of you who don't remember or are too young, 811 Prospect was the Standard Theater. It showed "art" films in the 70s and 80s. It was eventually torn down and the current  structure was built in its place.

"This downtown Cleveland theatre, which was sort of out of the way on Prospect Avenue, was opened June 12, 1914 as the Standard Theatre. In later years it was mainly a venue for adult pornographic films, although it had shown mainstream films early in its life. The Standard Theatre closed in 1989. The theatre had shown black-oriented action films briefly in the early-1980’s. It was demolished in 1995."

Texas developer could buy downtown Cleveland's Ohio Bell Building for apartments (photos)

By Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer

on June 22, 2017 at 3:46 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio - A Texas developer has designs on one of downtown Cleveland's most recognizable towers, the Art Deco-style Ohio Bell Building that has been a telecommunications hub since it opened in 1927.

Todd Interests of Dallas has a contract to buy the 22-floor building from an affiliate of AT&T, according to documents submitted to the Cleveland Landmarks Commission. The real estate firm is exploring a partial residential conversion of the property, where AT&T maintains servers and other equipment on the lower floors but the upper levels sit empty.

Under the Todd Interests proposal, AT&T would stay put. Floors nine through 22 would become roughly 147 apartments and shared spaces for residents, following the trend of turning vacant or underused downtown office space into housing. Such conversion projects steadily are remaking the central business district, aided by valuable tax credits for historic preservation.

An surprising turn away from the original plans (above). Interestingly, downtown's hotel occupancy is stronger this year than it was in 2016 with the RNC, NBA Finals & World Series. The residential growth downtown is actually driving up hotel occupancy as people visit downtown residents or new residents stay downtown to shop for housing...

I really love this building and yet it so often feels overlooked!  One of our only Art Deco skyscrapers downtown.  I think this will be quite successful if it goes as planned... if nothing more to give Tribe-goers one more option right next to the field (Hilton Garden Inn being the only other).  I so hope they can give the outside a good scrub and light it up!

Since the city is on a mural kick right now, I wonder if we can convince ATT to do a nice huge mural to cover up their wjndowless building next door. I get that we can’t get rid of it because I’m sure there’s some very expensive equipment in there, but can we at least make it look pretty? It would get a ton of attention being so close to the stadiums too

Agree with MrClifton - the Ohio Bell building doesn’t get the love it deserves.  A good scrubbing and some creative lighting is definitely in order to highlight the building’s classic Art Deco look. And how cool would an apartment be where you could watch the Tribe win a World Series, in person, without buying a ticket!

I was totally unaware of anything happening at the fidelity building. I think it was for sale at one point.

Who is the ownership behind this project. Nice to see another hotel as i never heard any rumblings about a hotel in that building

Good to hear that the AT &T building got credits for their hotel conversion.

Does anyone know of any downtown projects that DID NOT get credits?

That's a pretty good haul for Cleveland, this round!

I also was unaware. The owner, as of an Oct. 11, 2018 name change, is the Diamond Investment Group Building LLC. The company's prior name is the Cleveland Atlanta Investment Group, LLC which bought the building in 2011 for a mere $450,000.

The owner's name is meaningless and looking up information on the attorney, Irwin M. Frank, who registered this company with the state offers no insights either. He has registered more than 250 companies. None suggest any commonality among them -- except Frank.

I just heard that The Century Federal Credit Union is moving it's branch and ATM from the 9th floor of the Landmark Building down to the 1st floor.  They should be moved in by mid-March.  It'll be nice to see something there on the corner of Ontario and Prospect!!!  A bit more "life" in that area.

There is a stretch of chain link fence across from Progressive Field and the Q on your left as you drive down Ontario. It starts at about Eagle Ave. and ends as you make the left turn onto Huron. It is rusted and weed infested and it runs along a broken up sidewalk. The city is so negligent in things like this. I have even emailed council members over the years. Well maybe someone else has finally noticed this. I found this conceptual video from AoDK and the Cleveland Leadership Center. At least someone is thinking about it.

Didn't I hear plans about repairing what's left of the old bridge down to Stones Levee and Canal Rd. and re-building the missing pieces to re-connect the Gateway District to the river? This   video turns it into some weird land pier to look out over a power station and acres of parking lots, which is still better than what it is now... but still weird. Also, unless their graphics glitched, please don't paint a mural on Ontario St. or whatever that big rainbow crosswalk thing is. Besides that, lovin' the trees and public art, now all they need is one of the Cleveland signs to take a pic next to.

I think/hope we may see a lot more of this type of activity due to opportunity zones.  What might have been a project just below the line now has a much better return if held for 10 years.

^ Agreed. And 7 million is a pretty good amount for renovation.

Especially since they can be used for new construction. Good timing, too, considering downtown is running out of old buildings to convert.

So The Century Federal Credit Union did move down to the 1st floor of the Landmark Building.  But it's in a totally different spot (with no outside access), than I thought it would be in.

So it really doesn't help the area look more "lively". ?

It was just Ohio Bell back office space.  Pretty nondescript building but could have a cool interior if done right, has great parking and is in a pretty good location.

Curious have there been any developments/rumors/anything with the Goldfish building? I haven't seen activity in this forum since 2016 on it (maybe I'm looking in the wrong place), either way I see there's three (I think) ownership groups in that block. What an eyesore, but at the same time surprised it hasn't been torn down for a surface lot lol.

I'm glad this building is getting attention.  I always thought it was a shame how many buildings around the cemetery got demolished for Indians parking.

Ken that is a relatively old article.  Are you suggesting you have some "new secret inside information"?  Yes, no, maybe.  And possible condos.  That would make @pugu happy.?

Yes. New information about a development on the NY Spaghetti Co. property that Geis bought four years ago.

Good to know... I keep watching that lot for any sign of activity since they said at the time it would NOT remain parking.

Do I complain about the lack of condos that much!? ?   Yes, I am happy to hear this news--though I don't know I personally would want to live at 9th and Bolivar (or so)---as there's not much around there. But I am happy that it will add downtown housing options and will also help to stabilize the area!
