Before this gets too off topic....

These dispensaries aren't like bars where people go in, get drunk, and then stumble back out onto the street and drive. There is no using or consuming in these stores. They're not places people can loiter and buy cheap drugs or alcohol like liquor stores. People go through multiple layers of security to even see the product, then buy products that aren't cheap, then take them home. You wouldn't even know most what most of these businesses are if someone doesn't point it out to you. If anything, it may get a few more downtown residents walking around this area.

This is correct. It's hardcore security too.

And most of these purchases would be taking place whether they were legally facilitated or not. This way, at least there's major tax revenue coming in (Ohio marijuana sales have hit $100M in two months)

But to keep things mildly on topic, dispensaries look a lot nicer to visitors than drug dealers hanging out around downtown.

Went with my brother to the new Landing Dispensary down on W. 3rd a couple weeks ago. Looks really nice from the outside and equally as nice inside. No loiterers, drug addicts or anything of the sort. And this was shortly before they closed at around 8PM. The only smallest resemblance of a vagrant around was my drunk ass. And we didn't even get to see the actual product in person, just photos and descriptions from a woman with a computer. Had to present ID, get buzzed in and out, etc. Very clean, professional and monitored.

I guess some people will just always have their stigmas about certain things.

The only downside I see is that the windows will be covered, but that's minor compared to how long these have been sitting vacant.

Would this make Cleveland the only city in Ohio to have two dispensaries downtown?

interesting. this sounds pretty much the same as in nyc. except they have examples of the actual products in glass cases and a bouncer at the door checking IDs. is it ohio product only? there isnt a lot of variety out here as the rule is it must all be nys products, but more variety is coming along gradually as the industry err, umm, grows.

btw they cracked down on all the blatant wild west weed shops — not too many left. but of course the taxed state weed is more expensive, so the same old underground flower market isnt going anywhere.

Not to pile on, but anyone implying a legal dispensary is some kind of drug den or nuisance property clearly is unfamiliar with them. Well behaved people inside and outside.

Three if you include the one on Canal under the inner belt bridge near where Cleveland whiskey is going.

Unless it's homegrown, you could end up with weed laced with other drugs you wouldn't otherwise want.  Maybe that is worth the higher price.

It can be nearly impossible to determine if marijuana is laced with another drug or substance.

Downtown has opened more Dispensaries than DORA's lol.

maybe add some vape shops and outpatient treatment centers in the rest of the empty buildings on that block to draw more foot traffic

I don't think anyone would object to either. There's probably a demand for both, and it's always nice filling up vacancies.

Renovation starts on downtown’s Electric Building
By Ken Prendergast / October 24, 2024

With financing closed, construction work will begin in the next couple of weeks on the $40 million rehabilitation and conversion of the historic 700 Prospect Ave. office building into apartments, called The Electric Building. And now the ground-floor has the end user of its lone commercial space identified — Tom’s Watch Bar, a national chain sports bar founded in 2014.

I think the ground floor tenant is a perfect fit for the area based on its location.

Perfect place for downtown residents to catch a browns game once they up and leave 🤣

Anyone know what the deal with the old Winking Lizard space is? While this addition seems like a nice addition to the area, the WL site continues to sit empty in a very prominent corner. Is it a layout and/or landlord/price issue?

Apparently, that's just being announced.  But do we know why the Lizard closed? Both of its downtown locations were always packed.  They moved out of the Galleria to, in my mind, a less convenient space nearby, and closed the one in Gateway.  But it can't be that they weren't getting enough traffic, or at least that seems unlikely to me.

If I had to guess I'd say it's a lessee's market in downtown Cleveland, especially for a well-known brand who's patrons will seek them out.  The Lizard is probably trying to optimize profits and gets a better deal out of a new landlord.    One would think they probably asked their existing landlord to match the deal and it was declined?

I believe was due to staffing shortages. Also, they left Galleria due to shocker, the horrible landlord of Erieview and Galleria.

^ Pretty much my reaction, but good to see something fill that space.

Most Gateway area bars are pretty quiet on non-gamenights. The resto near Gateway was also a massive space, even after the BoA ATM cut down on it. I'd imagine consolidating into their new space also has something to do with prioritizing lunch crowds - they're also a literal hair closer to the hotels, if that makes any difference.

There is one down in Dublin, I actually quite liked it. As far as sports bars go it's pretty high scale. It's above B-Dubs, Harry Buffalo etc. I think it'll do well and it fits the area, despite the man with the name on the front being a sleazebag!

Only the dispensary part I believe. I didn’t remember reading until yesterday that it will also have offices and apartments in too.

Probably belongs in streetscapes thread, but they've blocked the sidewalk without any pedestrian alternatives (and I'd assume it's a long term thing). It's a shame more developers aren't privy to the newish legislation about maintaining pedestrian access, then again it's like a one time $100 fine.

They mentioned "cosmetic improvements". Maybe, we can hope, the black cladding will come off.

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

hope they can last there. cursed spot

Patrons of the Whiskey Bar will also enjoy free parking in an adjacent lot.

Now they got 'em. Will be wildly successful I bet 🤣

Nothing says "success" to a Whiskey Bar quite like sending your patrons to their cars after drinking without having to having to stop to pay!

Sorry, no Crain’s account so I wasn’t able to read beyond the first line or two of the article. But how are there still ARPA funds, does it say where exactly these came from?

The ARPA funds were slated for a minority business program but were not committed during the current year.

Cuyahoga library will get you free access to Crain's.

Is that the case again.  About 6 months ago I all of a sudden could not access Crain's through my library membership and when I inquired I was told the library no longer provided access electronically.  I have not tried since I was told that.

Edited by Htsguy

AS far as Crain's is concerned  I pay 5.00/ per week for an online subscription and a paper subscription.

For me it was an Absolute need as it is extremely informative.

If you are truly in development as almost all of the forumers are - it is a must.

Between Crains,  UrbanOhio,  & KJP's Neo-trans  you will be well informed.
