May 20, 20169 yr That's true. Hipsters like to be seen. And are the way they are because it's supposedly trendy and a fashion....

April 28, 20178 yr Did you guys hear about this Fyre Festival disaster? It was advertised as a "luxury" music festival in the Bahamas with mostly hip hop artists but also Blink-182 thrown in for some reason. It claimed to offer "the best in food, art, music and adventure." Tickets were extremely expensive, with the top tier being $200,000 (which included lodging in "private villas"). Well, it turned out to be a total disaster. None of the infrastructure was set up, most of the bands cancelled, and the only food available was cheese sandwiches. It was complete chaos as people started arriving. What a shame. It would've been the perfect way to rich kids to generate loads of content for Instagram. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/fyre-festival-canceled-after-guests-allege-hoax/
April 28, 20178 yr ^^^ Anyone who pays up to $200k to attend a 'luxury music festival' should have their money taken away from them. (Although that kind of is what happened!) My hovercraft is full of eels
April 28, 20178 yr These people got a way better story out of this than if the festival had actually happened as planned. I photographed a failed festival in 2005, at the Athens County Fairgrounds. They expected 40,000 people but only about 2,000 showed up because the county banned camping at the last minute. It got wild when hired hands started stealing what little cash did come in and then disappeared into the night.

June 2, 20178 yr My girlfriend just got back from Kansas City and reported back that there are a ton of Hipsters there. She spent some time in Westport. Not sure about St. Louis but if you look at that map of commute patterns, St. Louie and KC have very strong ties (which makes sense - two fairly big cities in the middle of nowhere with not much between them - something we take for granted in Ohio.) She stayed only 15 minutes from downtown and had no cell phone reception even though she has AT&T which is a premium carrier. I couldn't even get ahold of her and when she'd send me a text, I'd end up getting a duplicate message each time.

They like Santana and Rob Thomas? They would probably flock to an ironic performance of people impersonating them vs them as themselves i would guess. Where does tribute end and trying to get Manuel Noriega to leave the palace begin.
June 2, 20178 yr I kinda don't want 1999 to come back. Yeah I was working at Blimpie 4 nights per week. The restaurant's radio was stuck on Top 40.
June 2, 20178 yr These people got a way better story out of this than if the festival had actually happened as planned. That story was hysterical! I purposely followed updates on it since it made headlines, it was so comical - I couldn't stop laughing. A bunch of rich millennials paying a butt-load of money to go to an exclusive festival so that they have something to brag about Instagram... They paid THOUSANDS. The acts that they originally booked weren't even first rate! They reported that everyone arrived to the island and there was rat sh!t everywhere on the beach. Their luxury accommodations were literally disaster relief tents used for hurricane victims and the meals were cheese sandwiches served in Styrofoam containers. Ultimately, I don't feel bad for them at all. Literally every band backed out of the gig before hand and I think it was because Ja Rule and that quintessential douchebag 'tech mogul' guy didn't have the money to pay anyone. There were plenty of warning signs before-hand but when it all fell apart and organizers knew it, they didn't even have the decency to tell people not to take the flight out there because they screwed up. They also reported that the douchebag tech startup mogul guy (I can't remember his name) was partying on a yacht in the sea nearby while they were all stranded. Before all of this, an anonymous account on social media was desperately trying to warn everyone about the Fyre Festival being a scam and providing updates w/ proof of it but people were ignoring it and didn't even bother looking into who was running it and all of their previous failures. Then there was the tweet by JaRule (major investor) who apologized after all the damage had been done and said he was 'taking full responsibility for it'...even though it 'wasn't his fault.' After it was over, on their website, they were offering to let people sign up for refunds but also gave them the option to instead get free tickets to the next Fyre Festival (that hadn't even been planned out yet and the way they worded it, made it seem like you weren't 'down' if you chose the former option. Hilarious! The whole thing was just hysterical. JaRule should have known better than to get involved with that frat boy douche. I never liked JaRule anyway - as an artist or person in general but it sounds like he's going to be the fall guy for this and considering all of the wasted resources like flying people to and from the island for no reason and the 'emotional distress' and wasted time they all will be suing for, I'm sure he's going to go completely broke over this. It's amazing how people will spend so much money on something without taking a little time to do research on it. It wouldn't have been too hard to figure out it was a scam. These start-up companies in the 'tech industry' are full of greedy swindlers and phonies who get rich by misleading people when it seems that anyone with half a brain could see that they don't have a solid business plan and just don't know wtf they're doing. There's a sucker born every minute! I just can't believe how much concert tickets cost now, even for legit shows. It's unbelievable. One of my favorite guitarists to see live is John Mayer - he puts on a hell of a show and I really wanted to see him this year, especially since he recently went back to blues but decent tickets are $350-$400 at these amphitheaters. He's not even that popular anymore. When I was a teenager, back around 2002-2004, comparable seats were $40-$60 for the big acts. I miss being able to afford to see my favorite bands without my nose bleeding and ears popping. Even nosebleed seats can be $50-$60 for my favorite bands these days. I guess it's because musicians aren't making any money from the music anymore... yet, it isn't worth their time if their income from concerts is below a certain threshold. With big music festivals, you're talking about a lot of artists demanding a lot of money from ticket sales. For these organizers of independent festivals, margins have to be razor thin and if ticketing companies hold the money until after the concert, to be able to offer refunds, I can see how these start-ups are getting in way over their head and don't have the cash flow to ensure that everything runs smoothly. It sounds like they rely on last minute loans to actually pay acts after they blow all their cash on promotion to hype up the fly-by-night festivals. If they can't provide proof of a high number of ticket sales for their ridiculously over-priced tickets, the loans don't get approved. It just happened again in Canada. Pemberton, planned for July 13 to 16 with acts including Chance the Rapper, Muse and A Tribe Called Quest, was abruptly canceled on May 18, when the two companies behind it declared bankruptcy. In a break from standard practice, ticket holders were not offered refunds, but were instead told that they could “file a proof of claim form as an unsecured creditor.” https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/01/business/media/fyre-pemberton-music-festival-market-tickets.html?_r=0
June 2, 20178 yr Young people 's time is cheap... older people (including John mayer fans now) is expensive.
June 2, 20178 yr What do you mean? Young people aren't willing to pay as much for tickets as older people? I just looked at a list of artists with the highest priced concert tickets in 2016. It seems pretty mixed but skewed by older bands who don't seem to tour very often. For some of the older bands, they don't have much in the way of multiple revenue streams like Ariana Grande or Drake. I wonder if that effects ticket prices. Maybe they demand a higher amount from ticket sales or maybe some of older acts tour more frequently as it's their primary source if income, causing ticket prices to be lower and these are the older acts who are known to not tour very often so they're scalped left and right. I don't know anything about it but I've always wondered exactly how it works. http://www.businessinsider.com/most-expensive-concerts-artists-2016-12/#3-justin-bieber-18 I know people who bought season tickets for the Cavs last year and made a killing reselling their tickets. I'm really digressing here but scalping seems like an insanely good side hustle if you have good knowledge of the entertainment industry. Cavs games aren't a rare occurrence but you'd be seriously surprised by how much people pay for them through ticket resell websites.
June 2, 20178 yr Young people 's time is cheap... older people (including John mayer fans now) is expensive. John Mayer has gotten a lot of new rich older fans from playing with the Gratefull Dead.
June 2, 20178 yr I watched a few minutes of him playing with the Dead the other night on Facebook (for some reason it was streaming live from somewhere out west). He's in year 3 of playing with the Dead and it doesn't seem like he's getting better. His playing is always afraid to lead and unable to accompany and get out of the way.
June 2, 20178 yr Young people 's time is cheap... older people (including John mayer fans now) is expensive. John Mayer has gotten a lot of new rich older fans from playing with the Gratefull Dead. He's always had random projects with other artists from all different genres. Herbie Hancock, Brad Paisley, Ed Sheeran, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Buddy Guy... the list goes on and on. The last concert of his that I went to was in 2013, right after he did the weird crossover into country thing and moved to Montana after making a complete a$$ of himself and becoming a recluse and I'm sure that other long-time fans like me also went into it knowing there just wasn't going to be so much of the improvised, awesome electric guitar solos per the 'Continuum' /JM Trio days and realistically just expected tickets to be fairly cheap at that point. He also just had vocal surgery and sounded like sh!t back then and couldn't hit any of the higher notes for the beloved songs of the Continuum and Trio blues era tracks with Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino. Despite all this, the nosebleed seats my girlfriend and I secured were 60 friggin' bucks each at The Schott in Columbus - a venue that allows a lot more seating than your typical amphitheater. Larger venues should inherently warrant lower prices since it's a less intimate experience overall for everybody and a higher supply of seating. We seriously barely could have had worse seats and the place was filled to capacity even though he was at the lowest point in his career/ fans having minimal expectations of him. His new album is great and much more blues-oriented and I'm sure the show is much more worthy of going to but I just can't see paying $350-$450 for a decent seat. That's insane, I think. I'm sort of p!ssed I didn't chose to go to his concert in Columbus recently, though. My friend went and said Dave Chappelle made a surprise appearance (he lives nearby in Yellow Springs), came on stage and him and JM had this big tribute to Charley Murphy who recently died. Chappelle asked everyone to turn their phones off so they could have an experience that was only shared by them. They were on stage sharing stories about Charley and the Chappelle Show days where Mayer was a guest, and even dedicated a song to Charley. That sounded really cool and seemed actually worth the $350-$450. I don't know. It's just weird. Ticket prices in general are just astronomical these days. It has to be due to bootlegging, sh!tty revenue streams and low album sales. Like I said, Mayer is known for putting on a hell of a show with killer impoving and guitar solos but concerts in general just seem like a rip-off to me, anymore. I'm all about supporting an artist but it ruins the experience when you know you feel you're being ripped off. My whole post was just a search for figuring out what the hell is going on with the concert industry. It used to be, for $40-$60 in today's money, you could go see one of your favorite big name bands with decent seats. I've taken many economics classes; I understand the importance of keeping it in perspective with consideration of adjustment for inflation but the reality is that concerts now are overall SEVERAL times more expensive than they used to be. It sucks! It's harder to enjoy the concert when you know you've been raped by high prices and a bunch of weird fees that aren't even comprehendable and were tacked on at the very end in the process of buying them.
June 2, 20178 yr I was dragged to a Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert at Quicken last year where the nosebleed tickets were $50. Although not really my thing, I always knew they were well-known and reputable even if they're not exactly the latest-greatest thing or what I knew I'd like, and was curious to check it out. I didn't pay for it (and definitely wouldn't have, voluntarily!) I admit afterward, I really liked the show though. It had a lot of cool, dramatic lighting effects and those folks are actually very talented and the experience was memorable but I definitely wouldn't have personally paid even close to that much for what was the worst tickets imaginable at the Q. We paid $25 just to park in Downtown Cleveland for the show for a couple hours! I tried to tell them we should have just taken the Rapid from Shaker but you just can't tell some people anything. Ugh. Whenever I go to stuff like that, I'm always a sucker for the Pretzels or whatever else is at the concession stand that I like, so there's that cost factored in as well. I don't know what I paid. Probably $9 for a pretzel with cheese dip. 6 at the bare minimum. In so many ways, concerts are such a trick.
June 2, 20178 yr Isn't this forum too mainstream to host a hipster thread? I have zero doubt that hipsters are rampant on this forum. Rule #1 of being a hipster though, is not admitting that you're a hipster and remaining low-key. Think about it. Do you know any hipsters? You probably don't think you do. None of us could ever claim that with certainty. Even though personally, I suspect I've had several roommates who were Hipsters but the fact is, none of us could say that with absolute certainty. That's what gives them their mystique.
June 2, 20178 yr Not to derail this train further (he says as he shoves the train off the tracks), but that's pretty much anywhere with a captive audience. It's just as bad at Cedar Point, which is why I usually just keep a cooler in the trunk instead of buying food. What I don't get is why places like that don't sneak the cost of parking into admission - they could advertise "free" or cheaper parking while on average get more money out of people since the parking surcharge would be per guest instead of per carload. “To an Ohio resident - wherever he lives - some other part of his state seems unreal.”
June 2, 20178 yr I agree. Those (what seem like) hidden factors are not something that is completely oblivious to the conscious mind. Better to be upfront about the total cost involved than leave people feeling tricked after the experience, when all is said and done. Look at Amazon and the power of 'free shipping.' It works because it simplifies things; it's straight-forward, simple and honest. It's in our nature to feel bitter about feeling deceived. It gives you a negative impression about a produce/service/experience and deters you from buying into the same thing in the future. Cedar Point is a great example. P.S. This is a thread about Hipsters - seriously, should we care if it's deviating from the main topic? It's a goofy thread to begin with. Hipsters will never be figured out and that's sort of the point of their existence/prevalence. They don't actually have an identity.
