Hey guys, I'm looking for some new furniture for new apartment. I want:

- A desk

- A dining room set

I am new to Columbus, so I don't know a lot of stores around here. I don't want to go the typical Sofa Express & More kind of place, because I hate most "traditional" furniture stores. My tastes lean more to clean and modern, yet not tacky -- please not a ton of metal and glass unless it looks refined. I like some of the more modern stuff they have at Crate & Barrel but I believe they're a little overpriced.

Where are some cool stores in the Columbus area? Even if just to get some ideas.

Haha, thanks, I know about IKEA. I like some of their stuff, but am looking for something a little bit more sturdy this time. :) Do you know the name of the place on High Street?

Global Living in Grandview Heights is nice, they just built a huge new showroom on Grandview Ave just north of Dublin Rd.:

Global Living, 855 Grandview Ave. (614) 488-4700 http://www.egloballiving.com

I don't know if it's convenient to you, but there are several distinct furniture galleries in the Short North:

Asia Gallery, 891 N. High St., 614-297-6846 www.theasiagallery.com

Four Winds International, 921 N. High St., 614-299-0311 www.fourwindsintl.com

GrandView Mercantile Co., 873 N. High St., 614-421-7000

Needfulthings, 772 N. High St., 614-291-5873

Norka Futon, 780 N. High St., 614-424-9949 www.norkafuton.com

ReVue, 881 N. High St., 614-421-5870

Roche Bobois, 858 N. High St., 614-299-9696

UrbanOffice, 641 N. High St. Ste 106, 614-221-4780 www.urbanofficefurnishings.com

Wildwood Furnishings, 1201 N. High, 614-291-9400

And of course, if you're willing to make the drive, there are IKEA stores in suburban Pittsburgh and Detroit :-D

Awesome! Thanks so much guys.

Are you thinking of Po Furnishings (I forgot to add them to my list)? Their original store was in the Short North, then they closed it and opened two new stores, one in Polaris and one in City Center. Their new website is "coming soon":

Whatever happened to "hand me downs?"  (and no, that is not a store)

Hey, not everyone wants a dining room set as trendy as this:

For cheap furniture first check Discount Furniture out by the Wal-Mart on Tuttle Crossing.  There is also a bunch of furniture outlets on Brice Rd.

Otherwise, I think Sofa Express is excellent, and there are several around town.  Including next to Discount Furniture at Tuttle Crossing.

i think you should just use empty pizza boxes

There used to be a store called Functional Furnishings on High St. in the Short North and they also had a location in Polaris, but both locations have closed.

if you want to hunt around aren't there some vinatage antique shops along high st in clintonville?

i dk if they are still there, but if you like picking thru stuff you can find some treasures. i dk if you like mid-century modern but i almost had a heart attack when i found an original 1954 herman miller end table for $15 bucks at one of these places. they are $3-400 new today and i have no idea what an original is worth but surely much more. we also found a groovy superthick/clear 60's lucite living room table we had for years. i doubt you'll get anything like that anymore but you never know.

the top of ours is white, but you get the idea

sounds like functional furnishings would have been what you are looking for -- too bad they closed they were a short north gentrifier for a long time.

Po Furnishings and Global Living would be my top two choices.

Try Pier One! They are like Crate and Barrel, but much more affordable and in my opinon much, much better. I have only been into Crate and Barrel once and that was enough. Im not into the whole yuppie/guppie crap thing. If interested, you could try the Decerators Show Case show sponsored by the Columbus Museum of Art. It was held in everyone's and my favorite suburb, New Albany!!! But it may lean towards tradtional taste, so I'm not sure.
