In the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHICS New Book: Best of Everything... Youngstown based Handels Ice Cream and Yogurt was ranked #1 Best Ice Cream in the WORLD!!

I will try to get you some articles on it, but here is Handel's Ice Cream Website.

I'm sure if you have had it you have loved it. They are in every part of Youngstown and the surrounding suburbs!

Go Ytown!!!

:-D

I'm going to have to say that I have had Handel's (as I am from Warren) and I have also had Graeter's (Cincinnati based) and Graeter's is definitely better. But Handel's is pretty good too.

I wonder what they based the rank on...

Being National Geographic, I'm sure there's a spatial component.

Hockey, ice cream, penquins...man it must be cold in Youngstown.

I think I've been to the Refugee Rd location, but I can't remember what I thought of it.

There's a Handel's down the street from me on Feder Road.....not bad, but I prefer Graeter's.  Handel's ice cream has a very rich, creamy taste to is so if you get something like Cookies 'n Cream then it's very good, but if you get something like Mint Chocolate Chip then it tastes wierd.

I may have to make a trip to Youngstown.

In the world??  Have these people ever tasted Pierre's Ice Cream???  :weird:  I want a recount!

You've got to be kidding.  Pierre's?!?!

Handel's is alright, but as others have said, Graeter's is the best I've had, Ohio-based-wise.

More like a bomb.

Jeni's is good too.

Pierre's is pretty good.  I'm not sure I've had Graeters.

In Sacramento, there was Foremost or Crystal.

Dip-n-Dots.

When is it going to be the future?

ah dip-n-dots.....the favored chilled product of the dayton dragons & other minor league ballparks. i refuse to call it ice cream. but i kinda like'm - heh!

speaking of dayton: unless you like those wacky flavors i'd have said young's dairy was thee best, but thats all over now since they are forced to pasteurize.

tofts or honey hut or woo city are all better than graeters even tho yepper thats very good too.

handels and pierres? eh.

I may have to make a trip to Youngstown.

Not necessarily. http://www.handelsicecream.com/locations/index.html

And no one has been to Denise's on N High St? http://www.denisesicecream.com/index.html Sure it's pricey, but it's really good. The Guinness and red bean flavors are really tasty and unique. This place was actually transplanted from Boston, so I think they don't have one anymore. I'll be trying Handel's this week.

Handel's is spreading nationwide quickly. You can expect another franchise down in Southwest Florida within 2 years...

I've never been to Tofts or Woo City but I have been to the Honey Hut in Brecksville and it wasn't that good, to be honest.  I actaully preferred Pierre's over that.

Red X?

Red X?

It works on my Mac, pfsh.

^What does Past, Family, & Social History have to do with anything?

^^^^Expensive for mediocre ice cream, but they do mix in ingredients you want in your ice cream right there if you like the novelty of that idea.

Yeah, I'm just getting the Red X...someone want to give us a clue regarding the secret Mac-favored ice cream brand?

No red X here.  I'll explain the picture:

A smiling Cold Stone Creamery employee reaches across the counter to hand a dish of ice cream to a disembodied arm reaching up from the bottom left corner of the frame.  A plastic spoon stands triumphantly erect in the ice cream, drawing our attention the the "Ice Cream Made Fresh Daily" heading just to its right, on the menu board in the background.

LOL! Thanks for that bold description PigBoy! ;)

Yeah, so here is a lesson for ya ... if you want to avoid red X's or blue screens, then get a Mac.

Ink, what the hell are you talking about!? :-D

It's a sound you make with your mouth, like P-f-sh-e.

Wouldn't wooooosh or Pffffffffffffff work just as well? :?

i'll agree there, denise's is maybe my 2nd favorite ice cream place... but i usually only go when i don't feel like going downtown (denise's is a lot closer to me)

Well, I tried Handels and it is really good, not sure about the best in the world, though it seems Ohio has the highest amount of high quality ice cream in any state. Maybe that should be touted to get people over here. The thin mint and cotton candy flavors are delicious. The chocolate ice cream, on the other hand,  is beat by Young's in both flavor and texture.

The real question is "Does Bob Hagan like Handels ice cream?"

Believe it or not, there was an ice cream made in Dayton; The Gem City Ice Cream company. The factory still stands on West Third street.

Not only that, there was an ice cream cone factory over in East Dayton, in the Huffman area.  That place still stands, too.

  • 1 year later...

Hi, My family and I recnetly moved to Warren. We are looking for a place that cooks some good puerto rican food in the Warren/Youngstown area. We have found plenty of mexican restuarants, but we want some good rice&beans and pastellios. Cleveland has a few good places, just hoping there was something closer to us. Thanks in advance for any help!!

humm...thats a tough question to answer.  I wish I could be of help, but cannot think of one!

good question. i have no idea out there. you got to bring it on in to the westside of cleveland or to lorain for that.

if you are west of cle on I90/rt2 in lorain-elyria, get off at rt58 and head north to lake erie. on your left on the lakeside is the castle, which has been many things over the years and is currently a new pr restaurant called, appropirately enough, castillo grande. i didnt go last visit but my mom likes it. i usually go to primos restaurant by the steel plant to get my fix and say hello. havent been there in awhile tho.

also in the past ive been to lozadas and el kefon in cleveland, there are others, but try those too. prob my fav restaurant in clev is la tortilla feliz in tremont, its pan south american not pr, but i like it a lot and so does my spouse -- you might too.

Thats what I was thinking.  The Westside, or Lorain.  there is one place my cousin went to on 52 street in Cleveland, but I think its a "hole in the wall" and it doesn't help dawn41778.  Although, rule of thumb in black or latin hole-in-the-wall restaurants is the food is usually outstanding.

Well atleast I know I can ask mi abuela to make Bacalao, Pegao & Pernil con Barrilito...ummmmmmmm  although I could go for a nice spicy pollo taino.    oooooo  ooooo, I know what I want!  pastelon de platanos maduros and Arepas!  Now all I have to do is get my other granny to make some chit'lins and its on and poppin'.

I'm so hungry now! :|

I was born and raised in Lorain, the southside. Thats where I am moving from. I know all about El Kefon(which is now a buffet), Primos, and Rainbows. Castillo Grande is a mexican restuarant, but still very good. I have been to many in Cleveland, just hoping there was something out in the Y-Town area. I can cook alot of the food myself, but it is nice to go out and get it sometimes.

Hey!  if you can cook good PR food..invite me over for dinner!!  lol  :)

Hey!  if you can cook good PR food..invite me over for dinner!!  lol  :)

Me too!  I'm always down for a good feast of pork!

I grew up in Warren/Niles/Y-town area. Where'd you move to?

My dad is hispanic, so if there were any PR restaurants in the area I would remember. I do remember going to some sort of Puerto Rican festival of sorts somewhere (maybe Mosquito Lake or Lake Milton) I can't remember, I was really young.

As far as good mexican, I would recommend El Rio Grande on Rt 422 in Niles across from the Eastwood Mall. Also Caballo Bayo in the Howland Plaza on East Market Street is pretty good (although kid of generic).

I moved to the NW side of Warren.

I can't believe there are no Puerto Rican restuarants around here! I guess I better start cooking...

Does anyone know of any stores that sell Latin food products, other than the basics like Goya? Also, can anyone reccommend a good meat market?

Hispanic?  ugh!  I hate that word.  You dad is (fill in the blank) not hispanic.

Not that it helps, but Cleveland's wetside is the best place to find latino products in NE Ohio.  I have no idea where latino's shop in the Youngstown/Warren area.

I know there's a Puerto Rican community in Ytown as well as Campbell. I would look in those two communities for what you're looking for.

At http://www.pluggedincleveland.com/restaurants/index.cgi I could find only two places listed in all of Cuyahoga County (if only to provide an indication of hard it is to find Puerto Rican restaurants)....

My dad is hispanic, so if there were any PR restaurants in the area I would remember.

If he's not hispanic what is he?  He was born in Cali. His parents and grandparents (great-grandparents) were born in Cali before it was a state.
