Posted July 25, 201212 yr So has anyone actually seen the movie? What did you think? A couple of thoughts: -I think the ending, particularly one plot point in particular, should have been changed to make the story a little better/darker. -Tom Hardy's portrayal of Bane was outstanding IMO and worthy of Best Supporting Actor consideration. -Overall I thought the movie was really good with excellent production and a strong storyline, but The Dark Knight was still better. I feel a tad letdown, mostly because my expectations were so high, but I do think it capped off the trilogy very well.
July 25, 201212 yr Anne Hathaway stole the show. I thought it was the second best in the trilogy behind The Dark Knight. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
July 25, 201212 yr I didn't like it nearly as much as the first two. It thought much of the plot was convoluted and the action scenes were for lack of a better word goofy. There was a lot there that didn't need to be, and a lot that wasn't there that should have been. I don't know what else to say without putting out some spoilers. We could put "Spoiler Alert" in the thread title.

July 25, 201212 yr I've never been a big fan of comic books or their movie adaptations, but for some reason I've always liked Batman, particularly from watching the cartoon series a lot growing up. For me it's not really about DC versus Marvel versus whatever else is out there. Regardless I do think that Nolan did an excellent job with the trilogy. Anyways now that the spoiler tag has been put on, let me ask: -Is Bruce Wayne alive at the end? (There seems to be some debate about this on the internet. When I saw him at the cafe in Italy with Selina after thinking he perished saving Gotham City, I was a little frustrated.) -Does the Blake/Robin scene set up the movie for another director to run with? I hope not...
July 25, 201212 yr I've never been a big fan of comic books or their movie adaptations, but for some reason I've always liked Batman, particularly from watching the cartoon series a lot growing up. Me too...the cartoon from the 1960s (I know theres a more recent one out but saw it mabye once or twice) and the TV series. They even ran a batman comic strip in the Sunday paper for awhile, up in Chicago back in the 1960s. I think I've seen two of the Batman movies mainly because my partner was an big film buff.... the one with the evil department store owner who gets electrocuted and that first one with Jack Nicholson as the Joker (excellent casting for that role). I think the same with Spiderman. The cartoon show from the 1960s was my intro to the character, but only saw the frist movie, which was pretty good, sort of dark & a bit of social comment, in its own way.
July 25, 201212 yr -Is Bruce Wayne alive at the end? (There seems to be some debate about this on the internet. When I saw him at the cafe in Italy with Selina after thinking he perished saving Gotham City, I was a little frustrated.) I took that scene as confirming that he was alive. If you remember, when Fox first shows him "the bat," he notes that there's not auto-pilot and at the end the two engineers looking at it with Fox say that an Auto-Pilot was installed and the "ID Code" on the install patch belonged to Bruce Wayne. Not long after you see him and Selina in France. Not to mention, there was never really a question of whether or not Selina Kyle died so I figured seeing him with her and the atuo-pilot thing that he was still alive. -Does the Blake/Robin scene set up the movie for another director to run with? I hope not... I'm not certain about how all the comic book story lines work, but as opposed to being "Robin" the sidekick like in the other series, I believe he becomes "Nightwing," another DC Comics character. They could be setting that up? There's talks of a Justice League film coming out and also talks of a 4th Batman film that would "reboot" the franchise. Anyone heard anything about this? Would Nolan's "Dark Knight" be the Justice League batman or would they create a new one?
July 25, 201212 yr I thought it was good but the action and progression of the film felt too inevitable.

Yeah I caught all of that with the auto-pilot. I think the intent of the writers was to make it crystal clear that he lived (and that's what I originally thought, too). Just saying that in doing some internet reading I've found that some viewers thought the final scene was just too perfect to be anything other than Alfred dreaming. I just think it would have been really powerful if Batman/Bruce Wayne had, in that one last altruistic act to save the city, given his life in the process to put a final exclamation point on the trilogy. I don't think it had to have such a happy ending. I'm not certain about how all the comic book story lines work, but as opposed to being "Robin" the sidekick like in the other series, I believe he becomes "Nightwing," another DC Comics character. July 25, 201212 yr ^I don't know, in a way I like how it ended. I think it went well with his character. While his death would've been a nice way to end the trilogy the fact that he had moved on and found someone else besides Rachel showed some development of the character. Him nodding at Alfred was kind of like him rebuking Alfred's claim that he came back as Batman just so he could fail or be killed and then not have to worry about anything - Wayne realized there was something on the outside world for him. At the same time it leaves open the idea that if Gotham ever did need him again he could return. Imagine a fourth movie down the road where an older Bruce Wayne stands in a decaying Gotham at the statue they erected for him? If Nolan and Bale are done then bravo, way to make an excellent series and not overdo it ala Indiana Jones/Star Wars. However, if they do make a Justice League movie I would hope it would be more gritty/dark like TDK series was. The Avengers was great, but it's very campy and light hearted with a lot of humor - a stark contrast to Nolan's Batman. IMHO the Justice League characters don't quite stack up to the Avengers. Batman and Superman are ok, but what is Aquaman gonna do?
July 25, 201212 yr That's the thing, I don't want to imagine any scenario where Batman/Wayne returns to Gotham City...especially if, as speculated, it won't be directed by Nolan and portrayed by Bale. But I agree with your point about the necessity of him staying alive in the context of character development. Personally I just wanted to see the trilogy end on the note of him dying to save the city, but I realize that a lot of fans will disagree with that.
July 25, 201212 yr The Avengers rock, and I like the more light-hearted aspect to Marvel. I want fantasy worlds to be fun, the real world is dark enough. Justice League is a joke. I agree the ending was too sunny for consistency with the mood of the series. Anyone who thinks Alfred was dreaming is looking too far into things, they obviously meant for him to be alive given the auto-pilot stuff. Typical Hollywood -- wrap it up with a bow and hint at a sequel to come.

Yeah, the Real World is, but I think that's what made The Dark Knight series so relatable to some people, it felt like something that could really happen. The Avengers is good too, just different, I really liked that film despite hating Thor and Iron Man 2. As for the Justice League, I don't think you'd ever be able to make that as good as The Avengers - the character mix in that film was just too good. Look at the other Justice League super heroes, they're terrible.
