Posted August 21, 201212 yr I'll add captions later - just a few shots from a Sunday outing and a reminder of why I love Cleveland so much :-) My favorite view of downtown Cleveland - sort of; we didn't have time to park so I could snap a pic from *on* the Columbus Road bridge. Ah well. Damned blur, but the off-ramp by the soap box derby has a good view of all of downtown: Views from the Harp patio: Off to Wendy Park @ Whiskey Island - I love how the approach looks forebodingly rural. The sand volleyball courts were busy - perfect day for it: And of course, plenty of people on the water: Great views from just east of the volleyball courts: Shooters was hopping that day: Last time we were here, this little strip was filled with litter - nice to see it cleaned up: Lots of boat photos in this thread - just a heads up: See the cement silos on the right? If they ever convert them into residential like the following photo, my @ss is moving in asap! Anyway, there was a line of clouds that kept threatening but they stayed south, so it was meant to be: More aquatic craft: The still-abandoned-but-shored-up former Coast Guard station - designed by the same architect who designed City Hall. Boat shot: More boats - oh, and one of those moments where I become six years old (aka "OOOH LOOKY!!!") - an inbound ore freighter, the Sam Laud: I just love the variety on the water: Hey, it's the Goodtime III! Like I said, watercraft of all sizes: Ernst and Young tower - part of the Flats East Bank project; it's not envelope-pushing architecture but it's nice to see a tower crane downtown after all these years: Another shot of the Coast Guard station: More watercraft: At this point, I was getting nervous about the weather: But all that stayed south of the Lake: Good times... these are the good times Shout out to the boat nerds (hope I'm using the right term) who tipped me off that another big ship was coming through - this is the Dorothy Ann; I believe it's about 606' long - and they're BACKING out of the Cuyahoga! The folks on the Goodtime III were loving it: A little more love for the Sam Laud: At this point, I was full-on ADD - "SQUIRREL!!! SAM LAUD!!! DOROTHY ANN!!! SKYSCRAPERS!!!" I'm thankful I missed the over-diagnosing thing that kids go through nowadays: It cracked me up to see this dog just loving being on the water - my dogs *detest* water to the point they'd probably manage to levitate over a puddle if they could: And that wasn't the only aqua-dog that day - wait for it... I believe the phrase is "sh!t-eating grin": Anyway, back to boats, skyscrapers and whatnot: Lots of stuff going on at Wendy Park: There's that aqua-dog again! This guy dropped his lunch a few times but finally snagged it: Did I mention the flightpath for Burke Lakefront airport goes right over this area? Apartment/condo towers of Lakewood's Gold Coast in the background: That's it - hope you enjoyed :-) clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
August 21, 201212 yr Thanks! Great photos. My fave: http://www.clevelandskyscrapers.com/wendypark0812/wendypark0812_77.jpg You got just about every mode of transportation in those views. Except one. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
August 21, 201212 yr Now it is complete. :) Thanks for getting my 'hood in this string of art.... http://www.clevelandskyscrapers.com/wendypark0812/wendypark0812_81.jpg "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
August 21, 201212 yr Wow, MayDay. I'm a little disappointed, I've come to expect such great things from you, but there's just something lacking in this set. Maybe you've just run out of inspiration or something, but I hope you're not losing your "eye." Perhaps you should let your significant other take the reigns, he's the real talent. Just joking. It gets really old telling you how awesome your photo sets are, needed to change it up. Besides, your ego is inflated enough, why add to it? ^_^
August 21, 201212 yr Is that US Coast Guard Station open (for views)? Great photos, as always. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
August 22, 201212 yr nice variety of summer water activities for sure - and so much more! did you take a break at cropicana? hows that place doing this summer?
August 22, 201212 yr That's it - hope you enjoyed :-) Great set as usual MayDay! Love this shot. Represents what the Great Lakes can do to a man. Dirty, weathered, expressionless with a can of Skoal in the front pocket to get through the day. https://www.instagram.com/cle_and_beyond/https://www.instagram.com/jbkaufer/
August 24, 201212 yr Thanks everyone! Looks like I forgot a handful of shots, so here you go: The sign reads something along the lines of "Coming Soon - Native Grasses/Plants" - looks like the effort to 'naturalize' this stretch worked! And it wouldn't be a trip to Wendy Park without checking out the action at the volleyball courts: "did you take a break at cropicana? hows that place doing this summer?" No, but I know it's no longer Cropicana - but whatever incarnation it is, it was hopping. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
August 27, 201212 yr Beautiful, and really captured the feel of a day by the water. You may be car-free in Cleveland, but I wouldn't be terribly surprised to see you with a boat in one of the marina slips one of these days. Of course, you may have to do some research to make sure you get a water-dog that will become a best pal with the pugs.
August 27, 201212 yr Loved these pix! To the person who asked, I'm pretty sure there was no Cropicana this year, it reverted back to whatever shack/hole in the wall it was prior to the temporary Cropicana, which was only something to keep Schimoler busy until Crop opened in WHD.
August 27, 201212 yr Another OUTSTANDING photo set! Great shots- I'll be staring at these in Janurary!
