So we finally have a look at the final draft of Plan Cincinnati before it goes to the city planning commission, and it's a doozy. I'd highly recommend going to http://www.plancincinnati.org/ and checking it out - it's over 200 pages of planning goodness.  A few things stood out to me:

1) This thing is a map and chart nerd's dream.  Seeing them map out the current neighborhood centers of the city and classify cincy's neighborhood by type is just, well, awesome.

2) Plan Cincinnati does a really good job at describing the current state of the city, where things need to go, and some possible ways to get there

3) It really hangs its hat on creating and sustaining walkable mixed-use neighborhoods.

4) For all the complaints I sometimes see about "gentrification" and what not, Plan Cincinnati puts a lot of emphasis on making sure to not forget about low income carless citizens, especially those living in areas underserved currently by mass transit.

All in all, I'm pretty dang pleased with the document.  I'd be curious to see what others think of it.

(I hope there wasn't an existing thread about this already, but I couldn't find one.  I'm sure the UO Thread Appropriateness Police will let me know if there's someplace else we should talk about this.  :police:)

I've been following along with this the whole process and was on one of the early steering committees. This plan is great... but let's hope it doesn't just sit on a shelf collecting dust much as other plans have. We need to continue to have a strong, progressive council and mayor to implement it.

Blowing off afternoon work schedule as we speak...LOL!

Im really skeptical of planning, but I just love the maps and graphs that are produced by the process....

Im really skeptical of planning

May I inquire as to why?

^

...various reasons.  I don't want to talk about it on this thread, since this could be a great discussion for this new plan, and perhaps even planning history of Cincy (one of the pioneer US urban planners, Ladislaw Segoe, worked out of Cincy), so will leave it at that.

BTW, there is a big planning effort underway in the Dayton area...a four-year regional planning initiatve that also provides some in-depth analyses, but from a regional  vs city POV (I participated in one of the workshops):

Going Places "...an Integrated Land Use Vision for the Miami Valley Region"

...which does dip south to include the Springboro/Franklin area.

I agree with John Schneider that Union Terminal should be included in future rail service.

Kinda surprised the plan is so soft on transit.

I'm wondering if that's because transit planning has to be done from a regional perspective?

I've only had a chance to skim through the document so far, but the relative lack of rail transit also jumped out at me as well. There were a few references to "multimodal" transit (which could include rail) and the streetcar, but it seemed as if they were trying to skirt the issue.

Yes. I think they might have skirted the issue on purpose to avoid any political firestorms. Just a thought.

I'm wondering if that's because transit planning has to be done from a regional perspective?

I don't think so. The city needs to at least articulate its plans for how it would handle future regional transit in the city limits.

Anyone know if i can get a paper copy?
